Relegation: Fear not!

Well our curly haired on field leader has stepped forward out from the off field shadows to reassure fans that there is no fear of relegation this season. To quote our captain directly – “No, it feels very different because we have controlled games. Last time we went down, we could not control games. Now we do. We try to create chances.”

Don't you worry about a thing!
Don’t worry about a thing!

I am not really sure what to make of this statement. It really seems the leaders around the club are singing for the same hymn book when it comes to media quotes. Pardew has stated numerous times that we have controlled games but with no results. I have always been suspicious of talk that comes across as lip service. To me actions always speak louder than words and I really don’t draw much confidence from the quotes we have seen in the press recently. An example of this is the Mike Williamson “We are behind Pardew 100%” quotes from a few days ago. Once again, it rings of lip service, so maybe they should take a leaf out of Tiote’s book!  To me he has dead set made his mind up to leave at the first opportunity based on what he has been saying. If that is the case, I would be looking to make sure he had plenty of bench time from now until  December if he was not interested in signing a new contract.  Well that is what I would do if I were in charge but I can’t see Pardew benching his main man.

I guess it is a double edge sword in regards to the amount of information we want to be fed through the press from the players and coaching staff. Many of us now regard most of what we read with deep suspicion, particularly when times are tough as they are now. Like I mentioned earlier, I would prefer actions over words in these circumstances. Captain Collo doesn’t speak to the media very often so maybe his words carry a bit more weight as a result, or maybe he has been backed into a corner through bad results and simply feels the need to say something in response.

If things keep going the way they are and we do indeed get relegated, Mike Ashley will find out that talk is not very cheap at all!

  1. Capt Colo hasn’t controlled much and needs to take a long hard look at himself in the mirror, tis funny that the 2 worst players that should have been dropped by Pards are the 2 that have come out to back him up.
As for Tiote I really cant blame the lad I only wish I could walk away from the club.

  2. We are controlling games then ❓
So the fact we cant defend for toffee and are totally impotent up front is irrelevant.
The fact we are joint bottom of the league is not a problem.
Everything is just fine because Prince Colo says we are controlling matches. And Willo states we are all 100% behind the spineless one.
    That’s nice then.

  3. It looks to me that the club were trying to sell Tiote over the summer anyway, and he would have gone if it had been Arsenal.
But nee chance was he going to Russia and I don’t blame him either.
Percy said it was only about the financials that prevented the move.
More like they couldn’t pay him enough to go.
I can see it all more clearly now.
Mashley wouldn’t sanction a move for a striker and defender, unless Percy forced Tiote out first, to pay for it.
That sounds like typical Fatty to me.

  4. Coloccini is correct. We are having a lot more possession this year. This is actually an improvement on last year; a good sign of better quality players. The fact that we are not doing enough with it in the final third is obvious given how badly our attackers are performing.
In my view the team’s greatest problem is that with more possession, we are more open to counterattacking plays. We need fast and skillful centrebacks to minimize the space opponents will have on the counter. However, such players are very expensive (Luiz 50m, Shaw 30m, Lovren 25m etc.) due to high demand among the top European teams who play with more possession.
Colocini, Williamson, Taylor, Dummett are not suited to play this possession based game.

      (Quote)

  5. dmhomag – And that is the big weakness with playing a 4-2-3-1 formation.
It requires a lot of possession in the opponents half, leaving the defence open to the counter attack.
You are right that for it to work, we need slicker passing and speedy CB’s
But also a Holding midfielder that can tackle too.

  6. I am sure Tiote must be well pissed that he has gave everything he has, never caused any bother, and when asked to step in as capt was a capt that lead by example and wasnt afraid to tell the others what to do, but as soon as Collo got back he was dropped like a hot potatoe.
For me Tiote is the type of capt we are missing.

  7. Well, I agree with Colo.

We’ve been the more proactive team in the Villa, Hull and Stoke games (certainly in the first half that one), and gave ManC a run for their money (I didn’t see the Palace game so can’t comment about that.) ***** against Southampton. Utter *****, actually.

Largely, the problem I see is that we are too attack-minded (heh, now that’ll stir up the barmy armchair managers with their Pardew-is-too-defensive nonsense) and haven’t done well defending counter-attacking play. Instead, the opposition have got a couple of chances and taken them, whereas we usually have more possession and fluff all the chances that come our way.

We lack some guile in breaking down well-organised defences, and aren’t mobile enough to transition from attack to defence to counter the counter-attacks. And our strike force hasn’t been very striking.

But essentially I think Colo has it just about right in that quote.

  8. Having more possession is not controlling a game – particularly in the areas of the pitch we have it.

Our problem with 4-2-3-1 is that we don’t have a lone CB in the squad. If we had an Andy Carroll or Gomis then it could work, but none of our forwards can perform that role. I also think the 3 midfielders we play in that formation are out of position.

If Pardew wants to change our fate, then he HAS to change our formation and some personnel – at least until Aarons and De Jong are fit again.

  9. Big Dave @ 8 🙄
Totally agree with you about Tiote as Captain.
He was at his very best for those few matches when made Captain.
He was a real leader on the pitch.
Prince Colo must have **** himself because he shot back from Argy pronto, despite not being 100% fit.

      (Quote)

  10. Sharpy – you are right regarding the lone CF
Riv just isn’t that type of striker. He has always worked best in a pair up front. Looking to lay the ball off for his partner. And sometimes the other way round.
But on top of that, the midfield 3 aren’t getting forward enough to support him.
Why we keep trying the long ball over the top, I just do not know. Even if he wins the ball, he has no outlet.
Basically I think we are **** at implementing the 4-2-3-1.
Its too complicated for the players we have.

Said before I would what to leave a club that what’s nothing more than to stay in PL,they don’t want to even try to win any cups, don’t want to go for Europe what’s the point of staying at a club like that, life is short in the footy game so if you are any sort of player you want to try and win something if you can, cheap talk wins nowt,of course willo, collo will back the club where else are they going to at their stage in life the CC at best, mind they are like pardew, blowing wind out their ***,let’s see it on the field of play not in the press, funny how nobody is allowed to talk to the
press yet you can if you praise the club, double standards here imo trouble
is at our club the truth hurts

  13. Trouble is that we have players who are out of position and are being played due to being favourites of the gonk in charge, virtually every league game has been the same personnel, with no positive result, here’s a thought Fraudew, change it, drop Gouffy and Socks and give Cisse and Perez a go with Rivière , play colback and Tiote/Anita as well as using Cabella as an AM and play a 433 with attacking wing backs haidara and jaanmaat with one of the holding DM dropping in for the on rushing defenders.
Possession don’t win games, unless it’s in the opposition half and attacking their goal with more than one option of a pass or a shot.
A high pressing game works if you have pace at the back, if not and the opposition have pace going forward, ensure the back 6 (/5 if we’re being caught on the counter) work as a unit and not as individuals ( sometimes this season, our defence has looked like they have never played or seen each other before) not the best but better and more dynamic than Fraudews ( it hasn’t worked all season so it must work this time philosophy, just like the set plays to Willo at the back stick)…….MORON

      (Quote)

  14. We’ve played two up front for the majority of Pardews time here, And have looked about as threatening as we do at the moment. When we play 4-4-2 there is more emphasis on the wide players to defend leaving us way too deep to create. We also end up hoofing it as we cant play through the midfield where we are outnumbered.

4-2-3-1 is not the problem, Its the way we use it under Pardew

      (Quote)

  15. CC – Yeah that’s what I was trying to say @13 🙄
So what do you suggest then ❓
We are no good at 4-4-2 and we don’t have the right players for 4-2-3-1.
    That only leaves 4-3-3.
I do remember us trying that once or twice, with some success.
But Percy says no, no, no.

      (Quote)

  16. Our real problem remains. Pardew’s lost the plot completely (he’s now about to pin his hopes on Obertan FFS), the coaching doesn’t encourage good football with zero movement off the ball, and sometimes even accurate passing going to marked players, or more often than not players without the talent to do anything meaningful. A team with far too many below average PL players – Willo, Dummett, Riv, Cabella, Sammy, Oba, Gouffran.

A new manager will obviously help and if he can get us to say 14 – 15 points by xmas, then buy in Jan we might, might just stay up.

      (Quote)

  17. Should have got rid of Colo in the Jan he threw his toys out, I think a few of us said that then and that itwould only cause trouble in the future. He’s been gash ever since and getting rid would have forced Pardew’s hand into keeping Mbiwa and integrating him into the team. Who knows, maybe we could have afforded Remy’s wages with the money we saved too 😆

      (Quote)

  18. Dave@8-exactly mate. I’m not in the least surprised he wants to go, he was probably brought here on the assumption that we’d invest steadily year on year with the serious thought of getting us into the europa leagues regularly. It’s never happened while he’s been here, and he’s one of our longest serving players now, so he’s prob had enough.

      (Quote)

  19. Was the mbiwa – collo partnership ever tried as a cb duo? I cant recall off the top of my head! If it was it can’t have been many times? ❓

      (Quote)

  20. Aussie – last time was at everton when we went 0-3 at half time and he hauled Mbiwa off for Willo last season.

      (Quote)

  21. Aus-it was a couple of times and we got dicked usually, Mbiwa took an absolute hounding from the fans who all blamed him rather than Cap’n Colo and his confidence didn’t ever seem to recover. They just don’t understand or compliment each other, which happens in football. Should have phased out Colo, kept Mbiwa and brought on an actual physical, traditional PL centre back with power in the air (which we’ve needed for what, 8 years now?) but nah, we took the easy option, keep playing 20k pw Willo.

      (Quote)

  22. cheers Georgio & Newkie.. Mbiwa was still fairly green when it came to PL experience prior to that game…. agree we should have persevered with him. We are leaking goals with the current dynamic duo so what is there to lose.. anyway it’s matters not for this season.. we don’t have access to Mbiwa any more…

      (Quote)

  23. pretty sure we’re down this season unless the fatman acts. January is far too late to address what is already an obvious dire situation. 🙁

      (Quote)

  24. I think we do have the players for 4-2-3-1; Cabella was influential as a number 10 at montpellier, Cisses best form for us has been as a lone striker, Sissoko was good wide right in the world cup and Gouffran can get some goals from the left as he showed early last season. Aarons & De Jong (when fit) are suited to that system. Armstrong was superb as a number 10 at palace and Perez scored most of his goals for Tenerife playing wide.

The problem for me is the three attacking midfield players being twenty yards too deep and isolating the striker. We also need to put more faith in our defensive midfield pair to fill in (like Tiote and Jonas used to when we played 4-3-3) and not drag everybody back all the time.

      (Quote)

  25. Lets look at it logically. We have had the worst start in our PL history and looking at the fixtures it could be one of the worst starts in PL history for any club.

If you can’t score goals and can’t defend its a disastrous combination which will send us down. Norwich last season couldn’t score but had lots of possession, look what happened to them.

But the reality is now that we probably have to win 37% of our games (Exc draws) which is a bought task for a team who hasn’t won yet and aren’t likely to be winning many soon.

      (Quote)

  26. Kim – we really wont get relegated this season flower.
However I do think we will be in the bottom 6 all season.
We will have 15 points racked up by January, when Mash will be forced into spending on a striker and CB.
We will do enough to just about survive, of that I am certain.
    pfftt 😕

      (Quote)

  27. CC – Cisses best form was in a 4-3-3 with Ba to the left of him and Benny to the right. The midfield behind was Cabs on the right, Toots in the middle and Jonas left. Best football we’ve played under Pardew IMO.

If we stick with 4-2-3-1 then I’d love us to go buy Cheick Diabate from Bordeaux. He’d be the perfect fit for that formation.

      (Quote)

  28. CC – The DM pair (known as the double 6) need to be more dynamic.
one needs to get forwards in support of the No10 (box to box) and the other more defensive and a good tackler.
So to me that would be Sissoko and Tiote
Has Percy tried that ? NO

      (Quote)

  29. Sharpy – The problem is we don’t have the two most influential players you mentioned in that formation; Cabaye and Ba. But of a problem that!

      (Quote)

  30. Stu – and Benny 😉 . But my point was that Cisses best form was not as a lone striker, but with Ba and Benny around him – and 3 industrious midfielders behind which allowed the front 3 to focus solely on creating and scoring goals.

      (Quote)

  31. Yes and I would argue he played in that formation last season with Benny but still couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo!

  32. 433 seems the best fit to me for the players we have. I’d have Arma and Perez on though which isn’t going to happen 😥

      (Quote)

  33. The other thing to consider is that far too much is laid at the door of our defence and the real problem is the attackers just lose the ball too easily too frequently. Painful!

Kinnear Houghton / Souness / Big Sam were just as bad and weren’t giving loads of money.

BB yes we all know we are short of a c/f and c/h on say pardew had little control over some signings, when we signed Riv pages said this lad can score goals h has proved that at his last club,we signed cabella he said this lad can make goals and score and works hard for the team,we signed the dutch lad, pardew said he is a world class r/b and will improve our defence and goes forward well, and what about the c/f we got on loan for a year, pardew said this lad will score goals he has proved that in the CL I could go on about other signings but my point is you cannot go shouting your gob off then say we are short of a goal scorer ect ect,I know some players need time to settle in but to stick to the same tactics week in week out which isn’t working is not helping players to settle imo pardew is not up to the job,it was a joke against Stoke he had to change tactics,so his brain wave was to change one c/f for another c/f but no change in the service to them the guys a joke

  46. @Mark

The difference between managers like Fat Sam amd Souness are, they chose their own players therefore lived and died by their signings.

Hughton should not have been sacked when he was and Kinnear, well, don’t even need to go there as you well know.

The only reason I give more slack to Pards is because he is given a squad to work with and that squad is the worst I’ve seen since he took over and is not good enough to stay up as it stands.

I believe our only hope is the side stays in touch with 4th bottom by January when Mikey is forced to invest.

Pards has done a decent job when given a decent squad. 😉

      (Quote)

  47. Some feel Pards should say what he really thinks. Riviere has been imposed on me and is ****.

I wanted Shane Long a proven premier striker but they give me a rookie.

Cabella is too light weight. He will get knocked off the ball. Unfortunately I’ve been given him. Wish I could choose a proven premier midfielder.

Best make the best of a bad job and praise them to at least get the best out of them. Some may think otherwise but some don’t think too deeply I’ve noticed over the years. 😉
