The mad Janmaater!

With a few wins under our belt and the pitchforks aimed at Pardew put away for safe keeping this week, I thought I’d take a quick look at one of our new recruits Daryl Janmaat. After a slightly protracted transfer due to the Debuchy move to the Gunners, Daryl Janmaat signed on for six years from Feyenoord.

I got the ball Ref!
I got the ball Ref!

Janmaat did come with some serious credentials as a world cup player for Holland and I think the general consensus amongst fans that he was potentially a very good signing. He did have some pretty big shoes to fill with the departure of Debuchy who really played well for us even when the side was struggling. To his credit, Janmaat has looked far from daunted by the crash and bash of the Premier League and has adapted quite well to the fast paced nature of the league. To me, he has looked better as each week has passed and has shown to be a good attacking outlet as well.
The thing I personally like about him the most is that he has a bit of mongrel in him. As far as I am concerned, every defender needs to have a bit of mongrel built into their DNA, without it opposition forwards would have nothing to fear and have an easy time of it. Take his tackle against Balotelli on the weekend. It was a no nonsense challenge that could have easily garnered a red card but it showed that he will not back down from a tough situation. I am pretty sure Balotelli didn’t touch the ball again from that moment on. I am not condoning bad tackles, don’t get me wrong, I am talking about tough mind sets and a bit of fire in the belly stuff. If he had gone in studs up and brought down another player, I would be all for him getting carded an suspended. Debuchy has a similar mindset but was a little more prone to cards. To his credit Janmaat has only 3 yellows from his 10 starts. Not too bad for a tough tackling defender. He has also popped up with a goal which shows he can mix it up in the forward half.

Like I stated earlier, I think Janmaat is improving with each game and he is going to be a key player as the season progresses. I just hope we can hang onto him a little longer than we did with Debuchy.

What are your thoughts?

  1. We’re going to continue to surprise people this season. At times we’ll be shockingly bad, and once in a while we’ll beat a decent team. Overall though we’re still a bottom 10 side, mainly because of lack of support from the owner (he’s spent very little this year considering the increased revenue). The owner is a shocker, the manager is average at best. It makes sense we are 12th with a -4 goal difference.

  2. Sidekick don’t need to take your word for it 😉 IMO he was only going through the motions as I have always said I would rather have a decent player give 100% than some so called superstar that only gives 80-90%

  3. We’re at the 10 game mark on 13 points. We’ve got some decent young talent. That’s 1.3 points per game (very snappy on me stats today!). So over 38 games that would give us 51 points or so. Possibly as high as 9th? Hard to say this season as so many teams are struggling. I’m more excited by our cup run. Can you imagine fresh silverware? Opening up the trophy cabinet, blowing out the dust and putting something new in? It would be brilliant.

  4. I can imagine us getting our knickers in a twist on Sunday and losing the game. Berahino is a very decent player and he’s in form right now. He could definitely pop one in against us.

  5. G2 Ashley is very upset with the away fixtures because it mean’s no free advertising for sports direct.

  6. Yes Terry, something needs to be done about that mate. Could we not just play our away games at St. James Park as well? I mean it’s very important that Mike get the word out about the rubbish he sells. Quite understandable. How is he expected to sell cheap rubbish made in Asian tinder boxes by children if he can’t advertise?

  8. good read. I like Janmmat. seems committed to the cause. has a good shot on him. probably on par going forward as Debs, better than Simpson.

Maybe not as good defending (yet) but the margin is minimal, doesnt make mistakes as much debs. less red cards/bookings

all in all, I prefer Janmmat, early days but hes getting better, especially since we’re now winning.

  12. Hello folks, good to see afew more posters on today than yesterday.

I’m just watching the Lpool v Chelsea game – pool 1-0 up already. But got me wondering why on CL week, these are playing now and Toon v WBA is a Sunday game? 👿

  13. Terry@63, in the early days, when Ryan Taylor first arrived at the toon I was well sceptical, and saw it as a dumbing down of the toon in general, as I really didn’t rate the bloke. Now I reckon the bloke has earned legendary adopted Geordie status due to his 100% commitment, free kick goals over the years, but finally because of the performance against Man City’s gazillionaire. That the bloke was in tears afterwards is understandable, because it aint peanuts to spend 2 year in the gym and make a fantastic comeback like he did. Especially since he suffered 2 career threatening injuries. Also had the pleasure to meet the bloke in Germany when the toon played Monaco, and the bloke is just a nice lad. Always had time for photos and a bit crack, and came across as a real steady lad.

  14. Just being over optimistic, if we win WBA, and every other results goes our way, we will be as high as 6th,going into international break.

      (Quote)

  15. Munich – are you suggesting that Sky fought tooth n nail for the EPIC clash of the titans that is NUFC v WBA? 😆

Sky boss to Jose n Brendan – ‘I’m sorry gents but your boys will have to play a game early – we want the toon v baggies!!, that’s where the big money is!’ 😆

      (Quote)

  16. Terry – just reading your comments on De Jong mate. I can understand why you would be sceptical, but did you see much of him at Ajax?.
I know it’s a very different league, but the lad is a very intelligent footballer and reminded me a lot of Teddy Sheringham in his style.
He clearly had an injury when we bought him, but I think it’s down to the manager and medical staff to manage things. If he needed an operation then do it straight away and use 4 weeks of the pre season as recovery time, rather than the season.
If at that point he didn’t need an operation, then the injury has to be managed and the games he plays (or how much he plays in those games) has to be done wisely. I’m thinking in the way Wenger managed RVP or the way Jose has managed Costa at the start of this season as well.
I don’t think Pardew and his medical team have done that with De Jong, and as a result, I don’t expect we will see the best of De Jong at all this season. Once he does get back, he has to find match fitness in a new league to him. So if he fully recovers from this injury, then I still expect to not see the best of him til next season – I hope I’m wrong like, hopefully he comes back in hitting the ground running.

      (Quote)

  17. mm, Totally agree on Taylor, imo we have missed him badly while he’s been out. Always gives 100% and his showing last week is testament to the hours of work he’s put in in the gym to regain fitness, well done him.

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy , Pards said that he reminded him of Teddy, hope that’s true as Teddy is one of my all time fav players. We can’t judge him at all yet he simply hasn’t played enough for us.

      (Quote)

  19. Sharpy17: In my very cynical opinion we will not see De Jong before March. I said it earlier on here, buried in my farting around with Troy. They only told us that he had a tendon operation 2 weeks ago when he was still on crutches (De Jong said it on Twitter, no official word). That says to me they were hiding the full extent of the injury and were being very optimistic when they said he would be back in January – maybe late January for training and March for match fit.

      (Quote)

  20. I think De Jong is going to be class for us. He has the reputation of being calm on the ball and a good passer in the final third. With our pace on the wing thats a nice player to have

      (Quote)

  21. MDS- And de Jong can operate as CM, AM or as false 9 upfront, with him back, I dont think we necesseraly need to sign players in january.
And knowing late injuries, id be tempted to put Ferreyra in:
    ———————Krul———————-
    -Janmaat-Taylor-Coloccini-Dummett-
    ————-Colback-Abeid—————–
    ——————Sissoko———————
    —-Cabella———————-Ayoze—–
    ——————Ferreyra——————–

Ayoze is very very versatile, he used to play left winger in Spain, if he has the same work rate as he used to have, and with the talent and intelligence he got, he can do good. Sammy Armstrong off the bench

      (Quote)

  22. Talking to a group of Forrest fans, they.say their best player by far is their keeper he saves then time and time again and is a real top signing by the toon, here’s hoping

  23. Roy@107, That’s mental mate, the world is full of suckers for sure.
What a final episode on PB, couldn’t see how he was gonna get out of that fix and never saw what happened coming at all like. Can’t wait for next series, I didn’t know a third was in the pipe line so thought he was a gonner for sure.

  24. Honestly can’t predict tomorrows result like, the baggies are a bit of a bogey side for us so who knows but I’d like us to take a win into the international break as would be a shame to lose momentum.

      (Quote)

  25. I see us having a let down against Brom tomorrow. We’ll lose 1-2. I’m saying this because lately all my predictions are wrong so we should win! 😆

  28. Will settle for a draw today to keep the momentum going, though to keep on winning is also brilliant for confidence.

  29. KIM no mate not yet, Georgio says I have to stay away to keep run going, back 16th during footy break, just had food off to have couple of hours kip ready for game, hope the toon don’t start game half asleep.
Hope your dad. has picked up mate

  30. Looking forward to the game today, but hope we try and control the game a little bit more rather than sitting back and hitting them on the counter attack. I think they’re good plans for bigger games but against WBA we should try and play a bit more.

The problem of course playing like this is that if we concede the first goal it completely derails our game plan.

Not sure who scores WBA’s goals so I fancy us to get a draw at least.

      (Quote)

  31. Ice, Yeah maybe you best stay so we get another win 😉 . Dads pretty rough, I’m bit worried, his age is against him tbh. Just spoke with him on phone, he’s very confused, Hazels going over today to see him .

      (Quote)

  32. Ben Shepherd: “Sone Aluko was in for Hatem Ben Arfa who dropped to the bench”

Really uncomfy watching this, Not like watching Carroll fail at Liverpool which was hilarious after the press campaign to get him away from SJP. When HBA went there people were making laughable comments about Bruces alledged attacking intent suiting him more. They play with a back five and 3 sitting midfield players ffs

    Total and utter waste

  33. would love to keep the winning streak going but i’d be happy with the draw. its a tough call

We’re going to miss Obertan and Aarons. Pardew will probably opt for Goof rather than Cabella.

    Is tiote back?

  34. I think a draw would be a good result, West brom have some really good players and are in decent form themselves

Wed have to be disappointed not to take 8-10 from today, Wham, Burnley & QPR.

      (Quote)

  35. CC @121 – are you saying its uncomfortable watching Benny not getting on at Hull mate?.

Obviously I’d be happy enough with a draw today – rather than a defeat. But I see no reason why we can’t win. I know WBA are well organised under Irvine and Berahino is a threat, but we have Perez and Armstrong both in form. I agree with Stu, in that we need to boss this game, but I think our midfield 3 are capable of doing that.
If our defence can contain Berahino then I don’t see them scoring to be honest. 0-2 to the toon I think.

    —– Cabella – Perez – Sammy —-

  37. Ash – not sure mate, but being Saylor I think it’s fair to assume an injury of some description 🙄 Which is a shame because our back 4 was starting to look alot better with him in it.

  38. Janmaat & Colback on 4th yellow card each right?

    😐 😐

High chance of them suspended for next game…

  39. Man this is absolutely ***** from the toon. Second to every ball, no pressing, and clueless going forward.

  40. Two ABSOLUTELY ***** teams.. they’ll get football done away with 🙄 🙄 how lethargic are our lot ?

      (Quote)

  41. There is only one team showing any intent…and it sure isn’t us. West Brom are absolutely garbage, but streets ahead of us..

      (Quote)

  42. The WHOLE TEAM ARE JUST SO FUKING LETHARGIC !!!!!! So nonchalant when they give the ball away, absolutely no speed of thought or imagination..

      (Quote)

  43. I have to say this is the kind of game where our recent tactics were always going to be a question mark. We are sitting back and wanting to counter attack but WBA aren’t comitting enough men forward for us to counter. We need to show more ambition here and try and push the game forward.

      (Quote)

  44. Stuart79, we have absolutely no intention of counterattacking. We have so many players quite simply off the pace of the game. Cabella, Sammy, an absolute waste of a strip.

      (Quote)

  45. Wonderful goal from Perez – this was always going to be a tight game, just need to make sure we don’t throw it away

      (Quote)

  46. Unbelievable goal from the Spaniard.. He bas something special about him. If he can work on his strength he will be an absolute star.

Sammi too has talent. Need to work on his first touch.

Very happy with the side Pardew has put out.

Capella has been a bit light weight. Wouldn’t mind seeing Cisse come on at some stage and pushing Perez said right.
