The mad Janmaater!

With a few wins under our belt and the pitchforks aimed at Pardew put away for safe keeping this week, I thought I’d take a quick look at one of our new recruits Daryl Janmaat. After a slightly protracted transfer due to the Debuchy move to the Gunners, Daryl Janmaat signed on for six years from Feyenoord.

I got the ball Ref!
I got the ball Ref!

Janmaat did come with some serious credentials as a world cup player for Holland and I think the general consensus amongst fans that he was potentially a very good signing. He did have some pretty big shoes to fill with the departure of Debuchy who really played well for us even when the side was struggling. To his credit, Janmaat has looked far from daunted by the crash and bash of the Premier League and has adapted quite well to the fast paced nature of the league. To me, he has looked better as each week has passed and has shown to be a good attacking outlet as well.
The thing I personally like about him the most is that he has a bit of mongrel in him. As far as I am concerned, every defender needs to have a bit of mongrel built into their DNA, without it opposition forwards would have nothing to fear and have an easy time of it. Take his tackle against Balotelli on the weekend. It was a no nonsense challenge that could have easily garnered a red card but it showed that he will not back down from a tough situation. I am pretty sure Balotelli didn’t touch the ball again from that moment on. I am not condoning bad tackles, don’t get me wrong, I am talking about tough mind sets and a bit of fire in the belly stuff. If he had gone in studs up and brought down another player, I would be all for him getting carded an suspended. Debuchy has a similar mindset but was a little more prone to cards. To his credit Janmaat has only 3 yellows from his 10 starts. Not too bad for a tough tackling defender. He has also popped up with a goal which shows he can mix it up in the forward half.

Like I stated earlier, I think Janmaat is improving with each game and he is going to be a key player as the season progresses. I just hope we can hang onto him a little longer than we did with Debuchy.

What are your thoughts?

  1. Great goal, what a finish! Been hard to make chances as west brom are chopping us down whenever we get into their half, we’ve been the better side and just edged it IMO. Hwtl!

  2. Thank god for that!!, great finish and absolutely what the game needed!!.
Pardews counter attacking football should be easier to play in the 2nd half as WBA come looking for an equalizer.

  3. Will somebody please tweak Sammi’s ears to switch his brain on, he’s thinking at snails pace, sorry snails

  4. Taking a look after international break, Arsenal will face Manchester United,

    NUFC vs QPR….

Imagine that NUFC wins QPR, the chance go into top 4. 😯 😯

  5. I’d be taking Sammy off for either Gouffran or Armstrong personally. He’s not having a very good game IMO – Goof would be like for like. Armaz I’d switch it to 4-3-1-2 and play Cabella behind Perez and Armaz

      (Quote)

  6. Get in Colo!!. He needs that!! – that ones for you Jonas.

I want to see us really go for it now!!. A 3 or 4 nowt win before the break would be great for confidence

  7. Great away win, pretty much as I predicted…

Who we going to sell in January to pull the plug on this positivity? Any ideas?

  8. We must pay tribute to Pardew again. This is a remarkable transformation. Route one a bit but winning football. Well done to the team and importantly Alan Pardew. When we lose rightfully we blame him but if we are to be fair we must also credit him when he wins.. 7th place now equal with MAn united.

    I’m pleased for him.

  9. Sharpy17- Sammy wasnt great, but he gets better in terms of workrate, win headers, and still can use his skills to deliver. Im satisfied of his last 2 games, commitment is in

  10. Janmaat has certainly been MOTM, but it’s been a **** game of football IMO. Good to win the game, but I have to be honest, I was never really worried about loosing it – WBA have been woeful.
The quality in this ‘****’ squad shone through today.

  11. I could care less about style points in an away match. Job done and didn’t give up much really. Defense was sound once again

      (Quote)

  12. So Dummett is that good?? He earned the right to play, as CB if needed, or full time as LB. Brillant performance from Janmaat, who shows how overhyped Debuchy was, Simmo was a better player for us than him, at least he could defend. With crosses like that, we surely have to bring big AC back lol.

  13. Ayoze- so much skill with a work rate off the charts. If he adds strength he could be a star.

Janmaat- not much to say here. As good a performance as you can expect from a FB. MOTM for me

Colbeck- just a tidy player. Doesn’t do much going forward but wins far more than his share of 50/50 balls, always pressures his man and makes the smart play.

Dummett- the lad is a CB for me. Always in the right place and can play the ball out from the back

Collo- the captan has been reborn once Willos been dropped.

  14. Great win once again. Not a great game but a fantastic away win. Janmaat great, Abeid solid again, Perez yet another goal with 3 in 3 now. Lovely little flick for his goal. Well chuffed

  15. There’s got to be an “assist” for Kimtoon today after the way she’s been “supporting” Janmaat 🙂 😆 😆 😎

  16. Where are all these great managers that everybody wanted to replace Pardew 7th

    Martinez 10th
    Rodgers 11th
    Pottochino 12th

Maybe Troy and I were right, we would not have got better.

  17. Goals wins games, Defense wins championship. Hope we’ll keep getting clean sheets as thats the only reward for a defense. Like that winning attitude we’re starting to have. Leadership is not about Coloccini shouldering all the load, its about having a core of at least 5 influencial players. Colo is already there, Janmaat Sissoko are showing leadership skills, Ryan Taylor is, Paul Dummett can be a captain in the future too. Players actually want it! Keep it real, keep winning!

      (Quote)

  18. Cholo – I wasn’t slagging the kid. He’s young and still learning the game in the EPL and he’s not going to be effective in every single game. I don’t think he’s a 90min player yet if I’m honest, but it’s good to see Pardew showing faith in him and keeping him in there.

It wasn’t a great watch, but it’s a good win and another 3 points. If we want to be a top 10 team, then these are the games we have to win.

      (Quote)

  19. Premandup- I dont know for Martinez, but for me Rodgers and Pocchetino are 2 overhyped managers.

      (Quote)

  20. Love Perez’s attitude. He’s got an old head on young shoulders. It seems that he’s also been christened with the “Andy Cole song”…he gets the ball he scores a goal… 😀 😀 What a great month for the lad !

      (Quote)

  21. Pardew interesting in his comments – name checks Colback and Dummett alongside Sissoko, Colo and Krul in “the spine”. Strong characters?

      (Quote)

  22. Cholo
For me Martinez talks a good game, but his stats at Wigan were worse than his 2 predecessors Jewel & Bruce, and much worse than JFK at Wimbledon. He does not appear to have improved Everton’s results after taking over from Moyes either.

      (Quote)

  23. Perez has been playing with that thing all forwards need , confidence . He knows he’s good and he’s picking up awards ( in spain ) for his efforts. You can’t under estimate confidence when it comes to strikers, it says it all that when we were offering no real threat he pops up with that kind of skill.

      (Quote)

  24. MM – aye, I don’t thnk that Haidara’s all that, just yet, but the shape of the team is really good for away games. International Break then a very diffent sort if game versus QPR – think we’ll need Cabella to prove his worth in these sorts of home games.

      (Quote)

  25. Just for my own curiosity does Pardew get any credit for this resurgence? Any credit for changing the tactics for the team to match the players he’s been given?

Would love to hear from the Pardew haters as to what their opinion is. Come to think of that, I’d like to know what Troy thinks about his relegation prediction…

      (Quote)

  26. Prem – I don’t want to **** on yours and Troys little bonfire, but the 3 managers you mention have something in common – first season in Europe syndrome. Whilst you’re bigging Pardew up, just remember how he got on in their position.

What I would say though is that alot on here had a lot to say about Everton spending £28m on Lukaku and we only spent £1.5m on Perez. It’s early days, but I reckon we certainly have a hell of a lot of quality for money here like.

      (Quote)

  27. MM- Agree on Haidara, but he worked hard, Dummett is better as he can defend better, and as he’s no nonsense with the ball, just does the basics things.
Premandup- I’ve got that feeling Martinez wont make Everton better too. I think people’s opinion on Old School managers like Moyes, Pulis, Allardyce or Pardew is a bit unfair compare to the likes of Pocchetino Martinez Pellegrini or Rodgers (never liked him) just because they play “sexy” football. Football is about having the right balance between attack and defense.

      (Quote)

  28. We’ll slow down – would love to, but can’t predict anything from Chelsea or away games at ManU or Arsenal, so have five games to get points in before January – QPR h, West Ham a, Burnley a, mackems h, Everton h – mebbes 8 or 9 points, 10 or 11 tops. Would still put us a good distance above Troy’s relegation struggle.

      (Quote)

  29. Stu – you obviously haven’t been on after the last few games, coz Pardew has been given plenty of credit – by most of his doubters.

      (Quote)

  30. It’s simple: Pardew had not completely change his tactics, he still does it his way but he made the right adjustments, credit to him. The young lads we have make his work easier, because they want to get their chance (and maybe even win titles) at the club. No need to play like Barcelona or Liverpool lol. Lets do it our way, with hard work and style and we’ll keep the run going.

      (Quote)

  31. We are on a good little mini run off the back of a long barren spell stretching back to last season. Let’s not get totally carried away just yet. it’s a long hard season yet and I still think we’ll be around 15th 16th, so long as we aren’t relegated, score a few goals and entertain a bit I’m happy.

      (Quote)

  32. Good away result. Must admit I have never been convinced by Pardew but full marks to him getting the team onto winning ways. Kim’s dream man clearly man of the match and I am impressed by what Abeid has contributed to midfield. Is it a coincidence that he has been present in the last three games. Agree Haidara didn’t look as sharp as usual. but seemed to improve second half. Above Liverpool. Can’t be bad.

      (Quote)

  33. Sharpy. **** away, I’m not taking it at all seriously. But if as some seem to believe that we have a FOOL of a championship manager that needed to be replaced by someone like those mentioned. as the old saying goes where’s the beef

      (Quote)

  34. Stu he gets a ton of credit from me. I think he’s got the squad and shape right they last 5 or so matches and has the lads pushing forward a bit more. He definitely has changed things up for the better

      (Quote)

  35. Cholo – I think he has changed his tactics mate. He was happy to contain for the first 3/4 of the game then try and win it with a couple of subs. Now he still contains but he has adopted this counter attacking threat that worries teams. The big change is playing his players in their favoured positions, and utilizing his whole squad – bringing players back in and developing confidence.

He wasnt doing that 2nd half of last season, and I think the stick he got was justified. But he has turned it round and credit to him for that.
But that also means credit has to go Ashley for standing by him – doesn’t it?!

      (Quote)

  36. Some on here need to fit wheels on their shoes as it will make the back tracking a whole lot easier for you.

      (Quote)

  37. Prem – fair comment mate. But he ****** up big time 2nd half of last season though. I think he defo lost his way, and without doubt that centered around the sale of Cabaye. I think he had the season mapped out and then Cabs was sold and he was either sulking or just totally lost the plot. But he was making bad decision and I think his disappointment at loosing Cabs bled into the team.
He started this season badly as well, but there have been big changes and he lost his focal man again in SDJ, but he’s back on track – and is without doubt a confidence manager IMO.

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy17- Completely. The difference is about individuals, Janmaat, Colback, Abeid all smart players, we can keep the ball even deeper positions, the other difference is that we play with more determination, which is key, we have more English players too. And we have a good group of players, it has to be said. We still try to contain, we just do it better, playing containing football and being an offensive threat at the same time is what make us good atm. Not same quality as last year, and remember, some players didnt care last season at some point, I point the finger on AP for not having made drastic changes last year. I do think that playing this way, we’ll win games even if Sissoko gets some games as Right Winger, we just play the right way atm

      (Quote)

  39. Sharpy17- AP deserve some blame for not giving youth a chance last season, but with the weak squad we had, Cabaye’s leaving came at the worst time possible. At least when Carroll left, Leon Best, Lovenkrands, Shola and even Ranger a lil bit stepped up to cover this. The only player who could play as AM for me was Vuckic and we loaned him.

      (Quote)

  40. Good win. Was a little nervous in the first 45 minutes. Janmatt 2 brilliant assists. Colocini looked very solid at the back. Colback really helped the defence at time, well played. I didn’t expect Perez to score in the first half but good goal. Lovely goal by Colocini and excellent result for us.

      (Quote)

  41. Stuart79@206, you never change mate 🙄 Just can’t let it go without throwing the snide comments around.. 😆 😆

Sharples@205 has it spot on there. Pardew hasn’t changed his favourite tactic of conceding ball retention to the opposition, then playing on the break. I would love to see us retain the ball better in the side. We give up posession way too easily for my liking.
But heck, thanks to the gold nugget, and find of the season Perez, it is working at the moment.
I was and am one of Pardew’s biggest critics, but he get’s his part of the credit for the way he has helped to turn things round.

      (Quote)

  42. Good question: Who will be the 1st team to beat Chelsea? We got 2 consecutive home wins…

      (Quote)

  43. Terry@211, agreed regarding Collo, and he edged it in front of Kimtoon’s eye candy imo. West Brom had a couple or three big, robust and mobile central strikers today, but Collo and Dummet played them really well. Collo’s goal should have won him the MOM.

      (Quote)

  44. Cholo – of course Cabaye was a huge loss to the side. But I don’t believe Pardew did enough to try new things. His success this season has came from pacy wingers – he had Sammy and Obertan in the squad last season, and when he played Sammy I think he did pretty well – but Pardew didn’t stick with him. He played Goof and Sissoko in wide areas instead and it didn’t work. He brought Shola and Gosling into the side knowing they were leaving – hardly forward planning. But I think there was enough in the squad to have performed alot better than we did in the 2nd half of that season.

      (Quote)

  45. Sharpy17- For Sammy, always said since last year’s Leeds game in Cup that he should of stick with him. HBA should of been a sort of new leader when Cabaye left, missed it. Im sure he putted Shola in because Shola was about to get pick for World Cup, and Shola could still manage to be useful no matter what people think. When I watch our midfield now, I understand why signing Anita was a mistake(always been in fact), I dont think Gosling was bad at all, he was one of the few who wanted to play. And somehow I may be wrong but maybe Pardew wanted to let the Aarons Arma or Satka try to win FA Youth Cup and let them prepare for this season, especially Aarons. But we had a poor squad last year, one injury away from struggle. Thats not the case now

      (Quote)

  46. @Sharpy..

Sammy is definitely a better player compared to last season. I think he’s realised he has to dig deep if he wants a future here, same as obertan. their work-rate is similar to Jonas atm

      (Quote)

  47. Sammy is on the last year of his contract… but I’m sure he won’t be going anywhere soon ..

      (Quote)

  48. Stuart,
That’s exactly it. Pardew is playing people in their correct positions.

He is spot on in referencing Sissoko and Colback. They have been superb in midfield. And we actually have two attacking wide men.

He should have done it from the start but he gets credit for getting it right. Didn’t think he had the balls to do it.

Will you and Troy admit our players aren’t that **** after all.

      (Quote)

  49. Wahey JJ

Will you admit you got it wrong about Pardew and admit he’s a decent premier league manager? 😆

      (Quote)

  50. Cheeses wept. How ridiculoooous must Bootsy feel now. He rates Pards nothing but a Championship manager. 😛

Go on Eric. Tell us how Bootsy must feel cos you feel the same. 😆
