Unfair-Lee treated?

After the announcement that John Carver was to be our caretaker manager until the seasons end, to be honest my first reaction was. Well at least a decision has finally been made! As underwhelming as the decision to stick with Carver is, it does however indicate that we have found our (unknown) man to take us forward next season. There is some fear that if Carver does really well, he will be kept on full time next season but I don’t think that is the case here.

A man to be trusted?
A man to be trusted?

Lee Charnley has not been in the hot seat long and he has a tough task to win back some trust from the clubs fan base. His predecessor Derek Llambias came across as a very astute financially sound business man but conversely, a really unlikable character with a cold disdain for the clubs fans .  He took gambles with player sales and held a tight leash on finances and over time his relationship with the fans descended into a seemingly hate/hate affair. There were no tears when Llambias announced his departure but there was some degree of skepticism when Lee Charnley was promoted from within the ranks of power. No one really seems to know much about the guy and he really hasn’t done much to improve this situation with the fans. However throughout his first transfer window I thought he did a good job of bringing players in and trying to get deals over the line. It was actually nice to see that we held off on letting Debuchy go until we had indeed sign cover for him. Maybe mistakes of the past were being heeded? Unfortunately we were still the missing a striker and the replacement for Mbiwa but I do believe that we were working on deals that could not be completed in time. Maybe if we were a little more relaxed with our purse strings it would not have happened, who knows? It would be hard to believe that transfer negotiations were a simple affair. These are still two areas of real concern and hopefully Lee can finally get it right.  This transfer window has been thrown into turmoil with the departure of Pardew and looks like being another fizzer. It is almost like torture as we wait for the striker and centre back we need and unfortunately I can see the torture continuing.

As far as Pardews replacement goes, I think we have got someone pre-signed and ready to go next season. I think Charnley knows how important this is and I reckon he will be doing his damnedest to get it right. Given the tight restraints that he has to work with, I think he is doing a good job and seems to be making the right noises. Charnley has really taken on a poisoned chalice of a role with in the club and it can’t be easy for him to operate under Ashley’s tough finacial model. But if he has his heart in the right place and tries the best he can to drive the club forward and bring back some exciting times then I am willing to cut him a little slack when things don’t turn out as they should. The new manager appointment will go a long way to see if my faith in him is right or misguided.

  1. Come on MM – its not about the crowds anymore
Nearly all PL clubs are awash with tv money now, but few can compete with the NUFC financial results. 😳
oh right, we’re the only club that holds any store in profit. Doh! 😳

  2. Stuart79, I suppose it’s not like you hoying in your season ticket, but a few weeks ago the toon were live on tele, and I just decided to take my missus for a nice walk then some food and a few beers. I thought flock it, I’m not gonna watch the match, I’d had enough of the soap opera. Pretty much unheard of actually cos normally I never miss a toon match on the internet. A slight protest I know, but just to let you know we are showing you some solidarity, and the ***** being given out at SJP isn’t going unnoticed… There are probably hundreds of fans deserting the toon, it’s just that the catchment area ensures that there are new lemmings ready to take place of the deserters…

  3. This Santon deal is very strange.
If he plays 13 matches, he goes for £3M
Why are we selling at a loss ?
I assume there must be a hefty loan fee in there also, but still 😕
smacks of desperation to get rid.

  4. The logic would seem to be get any money for him rather than no money next year.
That plus 30k saved every week.
    sweet 😉

  5. I am nee whizz kid when it comes to running footy clubs, but I read that if you take away the TV cash the toon were better off with the halls/Freddy ie we are in more dept now than with the Halls its just owe it to jabba now I don’t know if the storey is true or not as I said Ime nee whizz kid on that scale

      (Quote)

  6. Ice it is a fact that we have more debt now than we had under FFS or SJH but you will get some saying that we spent all future Sponsorship money on players etc , like in Owen’s case but as things are under Jabba we wont be buying owen’s and we don’t have any future sponsorship money

      (Quote)

  7. BB maybe the club know the knee he keeps getting trouble with is going to be long term prob,as I remember he had this trouble when he first came to
the toon, just a thought like as he is still just a young guy and jabba would have got a lot more if he had a good season or two

  8. Why aren’t we offering Santon a new deal? I’ll tell you reason; because he’s on more money than Hadaira that’s why. It’s pityful! Again, it’s not about quality it’s about saving money! Crystal is opaque in comparison to the clarity in which we see Ashleys plan.

  9. Oh and I forgot to mention, that this is a great example of the clubs business policy over football requirements. We have the third worst defence in the league and have consistently conceded more goals than most teams in the PL for the last few years yet we have sold one centre half, lost one to injury for the season and are about to let another defender leave the club. Can anyone tell me on what basis this is in the teams best interests?

  10. DAVE. we live in the real world mate, but at least we had some good footy times then and I think most fans just want to see their club trying to improve and not how much we have in the bank its beyond most fans I think, they spend their. hard earned cash and want to see a little in return

  11. ICe we did see meaningful and fun football in those days but those clowns ran the club on credit and nearly into the ground. Ashley’s too far in the other direction mind. Reckon there’s a sweet spot in between the two where most clubs operate which is where I’d like to see us.

  15. Stu, he will always pick Spuds over us, better club at the mo and a chance to play with big names and European football . I don’t blame him tbh, also he probably gets better cash there, we are in limbo with no idea if JC will stay as coach or not so over all rather unappealing option.

      (Quote)

  16. Don’t forget he has also snubbed Liverpool and Villa and several foreign clubs too. Think he wanted to stay in London but if he gets the chance to go to a Barca in the future or a real Madrid he may have to change his attitude about how far he moves.

How can anyone ever defend these idiots running our club?

      (Quote)

  20. Well Santon went quick…he was an odd one, he had some immense games for us when he started but at the same time defensively he never really improved…he, Dummet and Haidara are all there or there about in ability and age, so I always thought one was going to go and Santon was the more obvious one.

Would have been happy if we’d brought in a centre back as that would have meant both Dummett and Haidara for left back, but as it is now if Dummett gets injured we’re limited at both those positions…

      (Quote)

  21. Thought Santon may have been moved up into the midfield when he returned. . ❓
Technically a very good player but he never stopped enough crosses getting into the box for my liking. .still a shock to see him go after such a long lay off with injury. .

      (Quote)

  22. We’ve heard relentlessly for three years that Santon is positionally poor, Too right footed, Injury prone and needed to replaced. He is now behind the superior Haidara and safer Dummett. Yet the people who have ridiculed the lad are criticising the clubs decision to get rid…

    Strange bunch

      (Quote)

  23. CC, I think it’s more the weakening of the squad tbh, why is it we offload at the last minute but never replace, that’s more a burning issue .

      (Quote)

  24. I guess we could count Benny in aswell that would be 3 players of the 25 man squad, with no players being bought to strengthen the team,, great business 😉

      (Quote)

  25. Well Santon leaving is probably one player we can afford to lose! Right footed left backs are no good anyway. I would have kept him for RB cover but he’s probably on too big a wage to be a backup.

Hope we sign a defender. Thought Willo and Anita had their best games of the season.

Colo? I want him replaced ASAP. Weak, small and his heads gone. Need Lascelles and another for next year.

      (Quote)

  26. Kim

No its something to moan about, People rightly criticised when Yanga Mbiwa left without a replacement as we are weak at centre half. We are more than stocked at full back it might even be the lad wanting to get some games

      (Quote)

  27. CC, that’s not in dispute, I’m not too concerned at him going, how ever I am really concerned that they are not attempting to address our CB issue this window. It’s all very well Lascelles next season, but he is still young and untested at PL level, we need an experienced strong CB in NOW imo.

Stuart, a player who cannot get into the team moves on. Great business

The only reason he can’t get in the side is because he has been injured for 6 months. His departure leaves us with only 5 defenders! yet again it’s trading coming before team requirements. Pathetic.

I think you will find my annoyance is the timing of this. We have now let him go and Mbiwa and have Taylor out for the season! Is that really good business selling when we are so stretched at the back and already have the 3rd worst defence in the league?

  31. Aussie – It’s just common sense from a football point of view or don’t you agree? We have a shoddy defence with injuries so we let two defenders go without replacement? Very strange.

Money before the team and that’s just a bizarre way to run a football team!

  35. Stuart, I do agree our defence is short of numbers and quality. .we have a couple of good players in Janmaat and Hadaira but Collo, Willo and Saylor are a cause for concern. Collo has been very good for us during his time here but the suspect performances are out-waying the good.

      (Quote)

  37. Aussie, that’s why we should be doing business mate, even if just a loan at CB it would help, no one is asking for big money signings but we really are taking a big risk with such a stretched defence.

      (Quote)

  38. Aussie, do you honestly believe that, after all the previous windows where we’ve needed a quality CB and forward too.

      (Quote)

  39. Aussie – Take Taylor out of the equation as he’s injured for the season. We now only have 5 defenders. Yet again another wasted season, yet again they just do not take the teams requirements into consideration. This isn’t a football club.

      (Quote)

  40. Stu – we didn’t have MYM all season and have managed without him – likewise Santon.
Santon is probably 3rd choice LB behind Haidara and Dummett now and MYM was 4th choice CB under Pardew.
LB is covered by Haidara and Dummett and we have Satka, Streete and Good waiting to come through at CB.

      (Quote)

  41. Sharpy, ssn saying Bigi, Vuckic and good all playing today for u21 and are ones possibly off on loan today. So if Good goes that’s another defender down.

      (Quote)

  44. Kim – If Santon goes and Good goes out on loan, I still don’t think we will be at risk of the drop. The higher we finish in the league, the more money we get – if getting rid of these players means we finish lower, then it hits Jabbas pocket. It’s a risky move without doubt, but they are risking Jabbas profit.

      (Quote)

  45. Any chance of the new manager coming in with a list of players he has worked with and wants to bring in? Obviously discussions would have been indepth and once an agreement in principle has been agreed surely the shape of the squad would have been discussed!

      (Quote)

  46. RB – Janmaat & Raylor
    CB – Colo & Willo & Satka & Streete
    LB – Haidara & Dummett

The numbers are there, providing we don’t get anymore injuries – but the quality and experience is certainly lacking at CB.

      (Quote)

  47. Aussie – it’s a valid theory, but didn’t they say that the new head coach would have no say in player recruitment.

      (Quote)

  48. Sharpy. .Agree about the transfer thing mate..but would you not ask the new man if he knew of any….ermm…..cheap players they could bring in?

      (Quote)

  49. Come on Sharpy! Taylor is out for the season and an injury to Dummet and Hadaira leaves up **** street. The fact you are relying on young, untested and totally inexperienced players says everything about NUFC. Not to mention the poor form of Colo, but unfortunately you seem to be quite happy to keep players in poor form in the team.

Why do you constantly ignore the reality and previous history of everything NUFC? When have we ever been injury free and when have all our youngsters who have never played first team football come in and been good enough straight away?

Sorry but I am going to offend you but you’re a mug!

      (Quote)

  50. Aussie – no mate, that’s Carrs job and the scouting team. What the case may be though is that the new man comes in and runs his eye over the team/squad before putting in his request – ie he’d want a CB, CF or whatever.
I agree with you though – this is little more than clearing out fringe players. It would be nice to bring someone in, but looking at the names being thrown around on SSN, I can’t say we are missing out on anyone like.

      (Quote)

  51. It’s all falling in to place, Pardew retrained Jonas, Goof and Ben Arfa as full backs for precisely this reason! Goof left back and Jonas right back to see us out til the end of the season 🙂

  52. Jabba runs the club on a bloody shoestring,I will never go back while he’s there he doesn’t even give you hope,on the Santon move well he’s been out six months how many games would it take for him to come up to match fitness?? quite a few games imo so maybe that’s why they have moved him on,jabba does not like paying out wages for no return

      (Quote)

  53. Stu – you don’t offend me mate, coz I couldnt give a ***** what you think. 😉

You’re clearly too busy throwing you’re toys to read what I said. I said in the post that whilst the numbers are there, the quality & experience isn’t. I said to the post to Kim that it is a risky business – but I also believe that we won’t be relegated as a result – so therefore it will hit Jabbas pocket if we slip down the league.

You keep wittering on about people learning nowt from NUFC history, as if you are some wise old owl – yet YOU are still an NUFC season ticket holder 😆 UCMIU 😆

      (Quote)

  54. Ice – even if Santon was fully fit, would you put him ahead of Haidara or Dummett mate?.

He’s good to have on the bench, but then Raylor can cover the same positions.

      (Quote)

  55. Sharpy – Again you seem to making out that being a season ticket holder is a fate worse than death with your comment. Why is that? I am a supporter, clearly you’re not? But I think you will find I haven’t renewed my ticket so another thing you have wrong.

Go back to mediocrity where you’re comfortable.

      (Quote)

  56. Stu – yes you’re right, they seem happy to do that. If you’re accussing me of that then you’re incorrect – I believe we need to strength – hence me saying we lack quality & experience.

But you may not be picking up on that coz I’m not stamping my feet, throwing my toys and declaring Armageddon 🙄

      (Quote)

  57. All your comments wreak of mediocrity along with Aussie. I am not use to it, so I don’t like it and ‘stamp my feet’ as you say. Or in other words let my opinions known.

  59. I agree with most people that we need another centre back. I’m not really bothered about Santon leaving because his done nothing for us this season. If loaning players to Rangers helps them get promotion and meaning will one day sell up then so be it. I highly doubt it but a new owner would want his own staff and players in.
