Newcastle cull begins

Will we find another superhero?
Will we find another superhero?
Lee Charnley and co. have announced the release of 6 Newcastle United players including our last gasp hero Jona Gutierrez, but how will the squad be affected?

The players to go are Remi Streete, Facundo Ferreyra, Adam Campbell, Jack Alnwick, Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez himself. Meanwhile, Sammy Ameobi has been offered a new deal.

A few years ago Streets and Campbell in particular were slated as future Toon stars, but their development has ground to a halt when they should by now be making an impact on the 1st team squad. With a club so focused on the ‘buy ’em young, develops them and flog ’em’ model – the question has to be asked what’s gone on here then? It’s easy to point the finger at Pardew and Beardsley, but on the flipside the likes of Paul Dummett, Sammy Ameobi, Masadio Haidara, Rolando Aarons and even Mahdi Abeid to an extent have made the breakthrough to contributors to our first team. So then you have to ask is it just a lack of talent, motivation, luck or all of the above that played their part in the demise of these two? Streete has spent a lot of time out injured during his loan at Rangers whilst Campbell has had several loan moves down the years and never seemed to have really pushed on. It could be argued these two were never really 1st team squad players and as such it is neither here, nor there that they have been released. It is noted though that West Brom have offered Campbell a deal, which would see him remain in the Premier League – so what has Tony Pulls seen that our coaches have not?

Facundo Ferreyra was a punt on a possible regular goal scorer. He had a decent record in Argentina and despite not starting many games for Shakthar Donetsk, he still managed 6 goals from 5 starts in his debut season in Ukraine. Then the Russian conflict happened and he refused to return to his club to train due to the safety concerns he and colleagues rightly had. It seems Newcastle decided to take advantage of this and give the guy a go at the PL, ppicking him up for a relatively modest 6 million quid if his loan were to be a success. Our coaches must have had this guy chalked down as a 1st teamer, but for whatever reason it never came off and he spend all season injured or playing for the reserves. End result? We have a space in the squad for a striker and the lad won’t be missed, as we never got a look at him. Hopefully they will chose a bit more carefully when looking at our next striker, as we could really have done with an extra effective front man this season just gone.

In terms of Jack Alnwick, he stepped into the breach this season for his big breakthrough following injuries to 1st choice keepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliott, however in his 6 games in the Premier League this season he conceaded 14 goals. Unfortunately for him, he had possibly the worst defense in the League in front of him, but still the numbers did not look pretty for a lad who brazenly claimed to be the next Joe Hart! With Karl Darlow coming in this summer, we can consider Jack’s position replaced and even upgraded, so all good on that front, no?

Next up is Ryan Taylor. He has possessed stunning free kick ability and treated us fans to some memorable strikes, particularly against the Mackems in 2011. That said, he has suffered some nasty injuries over the last couple of years and during the limited appearances he has made this season he has looked a shadow of his former self. He has even pulled out of tackles, leading to at least one goal conceded by us – which had been unheard of for Taylor. As a result letting him go is the right thing to do and it frees up a space and wages at right back for a new signing. I hope his injuries are behind him and he can see out his last couple of years as a pro footballer at a decent level.

Finally, Jonas Gutierrez. What an up and down time he has had over the years. He was with us during our relegation several moons ago and he knows the pain of relegation. What stood out about him against Man Utd just after he joined was his abundance of energy. He was immense that day. He was always reliable if not spectacular after that, but as he got older many of us commented that his legs had gone and not too many were disappointed when he was shipped off to Norwich on loan. Little did we know his legs were not the problem, but he was seriously ill with testicular cancer. He has made it clear that the club did not support him through this difficult time and he clearly resents our club owner for how he was treated. However, he never stopped believing and was given plenty of support by the Toon Army. The end result is a film script. He fights the illness and beats it, returns to us, gets himself fitter than most of our squad, pulls the black and white shirt back on despite how he had allegedly been treated by the board and saved us from the doomed drop. What an absolute legend. I believe he was worth a year’s contract based on that performance alone, but can understand why the hierarchy may want to move his wages on and bring in the next generation of talent.

All in all, this cull does not seem like a bad thing – so long as suitable, quality replacements come in for Jonas and Ryan – whose character and work ethic will be a big miss in the dressing room.

  1. Can you call if a cull if contracts end? Wouldn’t that be like natural die off in the herd? The real loss here is the inability to sell the players and try to use those funds towards replacements…poor management there I think. However, the wages saved will be nice.

I will miss Jonas most of all. I liked his spirit. I was never a huge Ryan Taylor fan admittedly, but he did put his heart into the side and that is always appreciated.

  2. This is just the start. Will shut those up who talk rubbish about the 25 man squad ****!

  3. As much as Jonas will be remembered as a cult hero in my mind, he is stopping the development of a younger player so why keep him on the books just to sit on the bench.. thanks Jonas..good luck buddy!

  4. Jonas is a cult hero, but he’s only managed 12 goals on 205 apps. I only wish the bloke well, but it’s the right call for me like.

  5. Jonas story and impact since coming back has been inspirational & it was a privelege to be at his last game. But I’m not going to pick on them for not renewing his contact. It looks harsh but hed stopped contributing regularly about a year before being loaned to Norwich.

The most baffling move is offering Sammy a new deal; I’d persist with Cabella for another year as it can take time & Aarons who hopefully can have better luck with injury but the other wingers (including Gouffran if he can be classed a winger) would all be moved on

  6. Shamrock, Good read once again. There need to be more exits for me, Willo needs to go as does Obertan. Think Colo needs to go too as he is a shadow of his former self and has never been captain material for me. I’m not too sure Rivi will ever make the grade in so far as a goal scorer goes but his hold up play is good. Shame about Campbell and I do wonder if he had a fair shot tbh . Jonas is defo worth another year, having seen him play in the flesh he was the hardest worker on the pitch and looks to of regained his pace since winning his battle with cancer. What ever we think of Carver I’m pleased he bought him back into the fold, albeit for a brief spell. That a man so close to death just a short time ago would end up our saviour is the stuff of fairy tales, said to see him go. Raylor was also a good servant to the club but alas those knee ligament injuries have taken their toll on him.

  7. Wish Jonas all the luck in the World – always a trier. Hope he does well back in S America & keeps well & playing for a bit longer.

Sadly football these days is all about dosh – he saved us millions on his last game – an apology from Ashley & a future testimonial is the least he deserves even tough he was never a world beater.

  8. Gallowaymag@8, A one off match to raise funds for the fight against testicular cancer in Jonas honour would be a good way to say sorry by the regime.

  9. words from Janmaat

“I like this club – I love this club already – and I’d love to stay here.” “We’re happy, but we know we have to improve next season as a team and a club.”

“It was a very nice feeling after so many defeats.” “We needed a win, and it was a nice feeling.” “It was a roller-coaster game – it was up and down – but we had to win it.”

“We knew Hull were playing, and it was important that they didn’t win, but we had it in our hands, and we won the game.”

“That was the best thing we could do – handle the emotions of a tough game.” “I think the fans were fantastic, and they helped us get the three points.”

Good lad, just don’t hop it to Manure.

  10. Shola Ameobi was also shunted out of the club under the cover of darkness… after 14 years at the club….

      (Quote)

  11. Well done Shamrock. Good to have you back and writing good articles. 😉

I dont hold out much hope for any fringe player struggling to get in our first team. Bearing in mind Jonas and Taylor who have just been released were keeping the fringe players out this season.

The Ameobi mystery continues. How do the family continue to fool the club that they are worthy of a contract year on year. Sammy is not good enough imo and never will be. Many will say he will make a good squad player. That mentality is why we struggle season on season. The club need to have players who can hold down a first team place and those outside the team need to be chomping at the bit to nab their place back.

In a decent toon side, Sammy will always be on the fringes just like Shola.

  12. Kimtoon@9, wor lot obviously don’t like players who may be somewhat maverick-like and don’t toe the line as such ala Ben Arfa …. Probably bad for team morale at the end of the day.
I reckon we’ve seen the back of both of them….

      (Quote)

  13. Sharpy – Some people make the 25 man excuse for us not signing the amount of players we want. Well we are 6 down now so that’s 6 free spaces already. Not even got to the likes of Fergie, Vuckic or Bigi.

      (Quote)

  14. Kimtoon, I reckon that if they can get a few mill for Abeid they will. Young Kemen is a bit of a beast coming through the junior ranks, he is the next great hope. Watched an interview with him a while back, and at 17 / 18 he has a real sensible head on his shoulders… another “starlet” waiting to make the breakthrough…

      (Quote)

  15. The fools running the club really don’t appreciate what they are dealing with here. We didn’t flaunt seriously with relegation purely from bad luck. We were down there because there is a lack of serious quality at the club, from owner down to playing staff. We flirted with relegation several times over the last years, borrowing strikers here and there, making bad decision after bad decision along the way.
Now we have escaped relegation by the skin of our teeth with the same bunch of superstars involved. Senior pros are being moved on and hopefull replaced.

Lee Charnley and the persons purporting to be our exceptionally talented “football board” have got some serious decisions to make.

      (Quote)

  16. Shamrock good read mate, you seem to have caught the writing bug mate.
I am sorry to see the back of Jonas, for me he always gave his all for the club, and from coming back from his cancer he looked fitter than he was for years. As I said before I liked Raylor but can understand him not getting a new contract.
One thing I can’t understand is Sammi getting a new contract IMO he will never make a 1st team player, but maybe the club gave him a contract to stop him from walking away free, then they can get a few quid from some championship club for him.

      (Quote)

  17. Stu – it’s not an excuse, it’s fact that there are restrictions on the size of squad. The problem has been that we have a lot of mediocre players – we’ve released 6 yesterday and I’m guessing there’s a further 2 vacancies with MYM and Santon leaving through the season too

      (Quote)

  18. Kim – I hope we keep Abied if we get rid of Tiote. I really like Abied and if he was played regularly then he’d be an asset I reckon.

      (Quote)

  19. Sharpy – People were using it as an excuse, totally ignoring the fact that half a dozen would be out of contract.

      (Quote)

  20. According to Campbell’s bird on Twitter he found out he was being released via Twitter. Can this be right?

      (Quote)

  21. Just thinking about CB – we want rid of Willo, but what about Colo & Saylor?.
Lascelles is coming in with good potential but no PL experience. That for me is the position that needs most focus this summer. We desperately need to get that right.

      (Quote)

  22. Under a good managet, Sammy will come good, especially if we try him as second striker. There is little patience with him but still we brought 25 years old Cabella for big money, he seems even less mature than Armstrong. And Sammy upfront would have done lot more than Riviere. In fact, Old Shola would of done lot better than Riviere. Riviere and Cabella were waste of money and our last transfert window was perfect until we brought those 2. You dont replace HBA by paying 3 times more money foran overhyped fake Ronaldo, you try something else and I repeat the biggest flops of season were Riviere Cabella and Gouffran and de Jong injury. Cabella isnt more talented than Abeid and Vuckic who both should have a nufc future

      (Quote)

  23. Stuart79@27, this is the “more communicative” Newcastle United 🙂
maybe Campbell’s lemon is not in the loop ? Maybe she’s been released too ? 😆 😆
    Rumours, rumours 🙂

  24. Some may disagree, but for the defense, Id go for Sylvain Distin to replace Coloccini, Lascelles to start with him and Saylor Dummett and Good/Satka as backups. Dummett to start as LB

      (Quote)

  25. The problem with Saylor for me is that for consecutive seasons he has missed large parts through injury.

      (Quote)

  26. Really if we get rid of Willo Tiote Anita Gouffran Obertan Riviere and Cabella I only ask for:
    Gk: Darlow
    Defense: Distin, Lascelles
Midfield: Phillips, Vuckic back, Kemen to come in the squad to replace Tioté.
Attack: Austin/Carroll, de Jong back from injury.

      (Quote)

  27. Sharpy17- Distin still got it, is a leader and is a successful French player in the PL, Id take him for 1 or2 seasons to bring some experience, dont care about his age as long as he wants to play. And we are weak in term of atleticism, he’d help considerably.

      (Quote)

  28. The next season id go for:
    —————–Krul—————-
    -Janmaat-Lascelles-Distin-Dummett
    ———–Colback-Abeid————
    –Sissoko—————–Phillips—
    —————-de Jong————–
    —————–Austin—————

Subs: Darlow, Haidara, Kemen, Aarons, Vuckic, Sammy, Ayoze

Reserves: Harper back, Steven Taylor, Sterry, Smith, Armstrong(loan if possible), Roberts and Heardman.

      (Quote)

  29. Prem – Caulker has had a difficult couple of years with Cardiff & QPR – but at the right price I’d take him. James Chester could be an option, and I believe Younnes Kaboul is available on a free.
I personally like Boyata from City & Micah Richards would be an excellent option too.

      (Quote)

  30. If Sissoko and Krul also leave:

    —————-Darlow—————
    -Janmaat-Lascelles-Distin-Dummett
    —————–Abeid—————
    ———Colback——de Jong——
    —Ayoze——————–Phillips-
    —————–Austin————–

Subs: Woodman, Saylor, Kemen, Vuckic, Aarons, Sammy, Armstrong

I admit Sissoko leaving wont necessarly be missing

      (Quote)

  31. If we manage to ger Abdennour, it will show how ambitious we are, he is that good! Janmaat Lascelles Abdennour Dummett would my ideal Back 4!

      (Quote)

  32. Most of the top clubs in the country are looking for centre halves and now because of our sheer incompetence over the last 4 years were looking for two. What chance?

      (Quote)

  33. For me in defense great options would be one or two out of
Kara Mbodji, Van Dijk, Shawcross but impossible, Distin, Vlaar and Micah Richards

      (Quote)

  34. Abdennour would be a the best coup possible, but tough to sign in my opinion

      (Quote)

  35. Distin I would have as a reserve. His 37 now but we did use Sol Campbell who wasn’t so bad in his last season. He could be a player/coach and give his experience as a defender to our defence ?

      (Quote)

  36. Distin is probably as close as we are going to get. The same bloke who won 2 Championship promotion winning medals this season.
At 38, he’s just the player we need. That’ll be the toon with 4 centre halves 30 or over. Great move.

      (Quote)

  37. I still think Distin has one or two good games in him that could benefit the toon. Surely his looking at one last payday before he retires.

      (Quote)

  38. Munich Mag I agree and we have the luxury of dropping Colocini, Williamson, Lascalles and Taylor.

  40. Terry@45, we have Dave Watson doing that job, a great defender at Everton in his time.

      (Quote)

  41. The best deal is to have Lascelles and Satka starting, and have Staylor, Willo, Collo, Distin and Dave Watson on the bench.
We could also have Woodman’s dad starting, sell Krul, and with Graeme Carr on the bench, but only if his bus pass reached as far as St James’ Metro….

      (Quote)

  42. Distin still got it, and if he signs, I assume Colo and Willo gone, bit still, Id take him even if Colo stays, Distin cpuld have good partnership with any of Colo, Saylor and especially Lascelles. And I notice that Martinez decision to drop Distin at Everton was wrong, and he only looked at the fact he’s 37. Our defense would better with him all Im saying

      (Quote)

  43. I don’t know Kim. I was under the impression Campbell was told ages ago he was getting canned, hence his recent trial at West.Brim despite still being under contract to us. It seems the club actually tried to give him a leg up by doing that so not sure what all this Twitter stuff is about.

      (Quote)

  44. Munich Mag I’m so disappointed in you. Mike Ashley would make a tremendous goal keeper.

      (Quote)

  45. Tel@58, he’s way too young mukka. And him, Woodman and JC would be fiting over the laf time pies all the time… we’d have to widen the subs bench too much…think of the costs involved… 😆

      (Quote)

  46. I think Grant Hanley would be a good option for us too. You generally have a tough tackler alongside a ball player. Hanley & Lascelles could be a good partnership

  47. Can’t complain about any if the names leaving . I’m just sorry to see theyve (reportedly) offered Sammy a new contract. Hopefully he turns it down if true

      (Quote)

  48. MDS@63, did you see the way Sammy celebrated Jonas’s goal against West Ham ? The lad is Geordie through and through…the lad loves the toon.

He’ll become a 3 million pound player with decent players around him…
Get signed on Sammy, a two year contract, an excellent squad player…and cheap…

      (Quote)

  49. I reckon Sammy could be a decent squad player, not a 1st teamer – but good enough to make the numbers up. He is home grown too, which we need moving forward.

      (Quote)

  50. Sammy staying aint a problem at all, he can play, and should not be compared to Shola, he’ll be a different and much better player. The problem is why Cabella 3 timed more than Hba for not being half as good as the Fat version of HBA. Why sign Obertan, Amalfitano, Gouffran, Riviere??? The issue is this one and the fact we never replaced Leon Best, Simpson, Guthrie or Perch go and never gave a chance to Tavernier Vuckic Streete or Newton and why we destroyed Shane Fergie and Bigi, especially Bigi.

      (Quote)

  51. I really like Jonas and think he was incredibly badly treated by Fatman. But you have to wonder a bit about someone keeping a superhero mask in his jock strap?

      (Quote)

  52. Eric – you big prude!!, you struck me as a fella who would try anything once 😯 😳

      (Quote)

  53. I don’t rate Sammy at all. Occasional moments of brilliance followed by matches and matches of nothimg

      (Quote)

  54. And its too easy to say Sammy wont ever be good enough. Future will tell, but he got big potential, works much harder than people give him credit for and needs a good manager, and Pardew managed him very well this season, but recieved zero credit for that. Same could be said about Pardew on Ayoze on Sissoko who all struggled more when Pardew left. And Pardew’s handling of Cabella has been top notch, maybe he should of drop him earlier in the season

      (Quote)

  55. MDS- Its just a lack of patience, Sammy played his first real full season,he should of play a lot more last season, but where were the marquee signings of last summer?? Those supposed to bring something different to the team?? If we had a proper striker to help Cisse and Ayoze and not signed Cabella who takes too much time on the ball to show only flashes and make no difference, we would not have struggled that much and Sammy would of been even better. But who did well when Pardew left?? I see only Janmaat Colback Ayoze and Jonas who did what they had to do.

      (Quote)

  56. I will probably be told off for this, but we should have offered Jonas a new contract, let the old one expire then strike a new deal. He still has one more ******* than Carver ever will.

      (Quote)

  57. I agree Eric, would have liked to have seen him on a 1 YEAR deal myself, but can understand moving him on. He may not have wanted to stay under the owners after how he was allegedly treated. We need to bear that in mind too.

      (Quote)

  58. And our defensive record is miles better with Sammy in the line up that on the bench or dropped, its a fact. In my opinion, Sammy but also Abeid Vuckic all have something to bring to this team but gets far less patience.
