Game On! Newcastle v Norwich

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Newcastle go looking for a first league win of the campaign over Alex Neil’s newly promoted Norwich City side who so far have proved to be a tough nut to to crack.

You can watch all of the action like on Sky Sports or via any number of other streamed methods for which there will most likely a link or two posted in the ‘comments’ section below.

Of course the best place to be is inside St James’ Park but for those who can’t be then why not settle here and discuss the action as it happens? Yeah sounds good doesn’t it?

I posted a match preview last night which you can view by clicking here. It’s worth a look as it details and injury news for both sides, a history of the fixture and some of my thoughts ahead of the game. No doubt those thoughts will get proved wrong.

I shall try my best to get team news as soon as I can following their announcement but inevitably someone will always beat me to it so it’s worth again checking the comments if I’ve not managed to publish the sides.

Whatever happens after that is up to the players on the pitch and is left for us to dissect and discuss. Wouldn’t it be nice to dissect and discuss three points for a change?

Howay the lads!

  1. lol troy was spreading negativity regarding SM after 4 games. 🙄

Apparently he’s seen nowt from the new boys to say they’d come good 😯

how foolish he must feel now 😛

      (Quote)

  2. Gini: what a player
Mitro: all effort and a quality finisher
Sissoko: still doesn’t help out enough defensively but can really lead the attack when motivated

The next £30M the club spends better be on the defense

      (Quote)

  3. Steven Taylor “There was 52,000 smiling out there”

No, there really wasn’t. Can’t you understand empty seats steven? They’re not all injured and sitting in a box office like you 😆

      (Quote)

  4. great result. Perez is the man making us tick with Sissoko starting to show what he can do. Gini was a class act today.

Good game to go into the derby

      (Quote)

  5. A great result but it could have been anything with Norwich hitting the post twice.
I’m not getting carried away because our defence is shocking at times and no one seems to know what their jobs are.
There will be sterner tests than that but it is a step in the right direction but the real winner today was Ashley because i can see a few of our players having big bids put in for them in January !

I can hear the distant whirring of helicopter rotors…

      (Quote)

  6. Yeah we still have a shocking team mentality, one of the weakest I’ve ever seen in a Newcastle team. Hopefully our front 4 can carry us again because despite Mbemba having a very solid season so far, I have little faith in the rest of them. No point trying to defend, we need to go for it agains them.

Think having Tiote in will be important, he needs to get his sharpness back – but he will be better against Fat Sam’s long ball and a better fit than Anita.

      (Quote)

  7. NEWKIE agree about the defence would like too see colo dropped and Dummet in the middle against the Scum . Memba and Dummet could make à decent pairing . Colo really Needs got rid of , Gini for captain any one ?he captained PSV too the title last season.

      (Quote)

  8. <<<<<<<<<<<<<< not to happy about the space we gave them for the 2 crosses for there goals but a fantasic result for us none the less 😉

      (Quote)

  9. 10 games Gashley. You hate the truth. You must be soooo envious of my correct decisions. 😉

      (Quote)

  10. Aye, you gave him 10 games after 4 🙄 and gave the new players 4 games before pointing the finger of gloom..

I told you there was something to be positive about with mitro 😉

      (Quote)

  11. Axel – yeah would like to see Dummett in the middle as well, he’s ok on the left and he can cross better than hairdrier but he looked better in the middle last season. Colo wasn’t too bad today but he’s had some real shockers, and he can’t organise for ****. Leave it to Chancel who seems to know what he’s doing. Either he or Gini would make better captains for sure. De Jong is pointless as he’s never on the pitch..

      (Quote)

  12. Really get confused by people slating the same players week in week out. They might be **** I don’t know for sure. Sissoko gets pilliored for not preventing goals. I don’t have an UEFA coaching licence but when his name goes down on the teamsheet I don’t think the manager thinks that’s the defence sorted. We have four defenders and two defensive midfielders who create absolutely nothing. Is that not enough of a defensive shape. Yes the other four have responsibilities. A system with this squad needs to be found to allow Sissoko to have less defensive duties. He starts or plays a big part in our most dangerous attacks.
Perez is a gem and what a delight to see a proper centre forward in Mitrovic. The Norwich 9 was a handful

      (Quote)

  13. Hatem Ben Arfa with another fabulous goal. P45dew and Carver wanted him to double up at left back. Mind boggling

      (Quote)

  14. Great result and a much better performance today.
Appeared to me that McClaren had Sissoko and Wijnaldum playing as box to box midfielders and they were very effective.
Mitrovitch and Perez looking good up front.
If McClaren can get a couple of defenders in and drop Colo we have a good chance of a mid table finish this season.

      (Quote)

  15. Toby – I understand where you’re coming from mate, but that modern day football. Chelsea got rid of Mata coz he didn’t graft enough and Jose is asking more of it from Hazard this season. LVG got rid of Di Maria for not doing it and he’s asking more from Depay now.
In the same way that full backs now are more wing backs bombing forward. But Sissoko was outstanding offensively today – that’s what we ALL want to see more of. If he can be that productive going forward every week, then I can live with him not tracking back.

      (Quote)

  16. Good win today but it was nothing to do with our defense. Our defenders looked out of there depth today.

      (Quote)

  17. Sidekick – I’ve always thought that Sissokos strength is playing further back rather than that right sided forward role he was playing. Gini looking better coming more from deep too – he could time his runs a lot better. He reminded me a bit of Lampard today actually.
I’m hoping the games up to now has been Mc looking at the players and finding the best set up for them. We are still very weak in certain positions – mainly defensive – but we looked a lot better today going forward. The front 4 of Mit, Perez, Sis and Gini look like they are getting used to each other’s game and movement – which was bound to take a little time, but they looked dangerous today.

      (Quote)

  18. So what’s the story with Tiote then? Why start him if he’s not fit enough to last more than a half? Yellow card after 6 minutes too!

Credit where its due. McC set the lads out with a positive outlook and very little in the way of long balls. We are dodgy at the back but deserved the win. Colo looks well past it .

      (Quote)

  19. Give Perez a new contract. My favourite player since Solano. Some good players in the team just need to get them some confidence and actually build a squad… Oh and fix the defence (by replacing half of them with new signings).

      (Quote)

  20. Troysta @73: you make stuff up and then wonder why people think you can’t be trusted. I said I thought we would win.

      (Quote)

  21. Sham – perhaps Schteve has had a word and it’s all sorted? Or maybe we were just desperate. Whatever the reason, Norwich began to dominate the match far more when he was off the pitch, but luckily their own removal of Tettey really opened the doors to our attacking players who thankfully dragged us through the 90 minutes. I know a lot of people don’t like him anymore, but I would start him against the mackems and probably look at bringing Anita on later after his first yellow…hopefully it’s later than 6 feckin minutes though!

      (Quote)

  22. when we’re ***** this place is full of posts. after we win, and quite a win it was..this place is deed???

I thought Tiote played ok. 1 bad turn but apart from that his passing is a little more direct then Anitas. Anita and colback are far too similar..too many short passes.

Anita’s through balls are diabolical. I would have preferred Colback/Tiote & Abeid but he’s offski

      (Quote)

  23. Gash – I think it’s worth remembering that Toots has been out 10 mths as well. I thought he did pretty well, and highlighted the importance of that role in our side. I don’t think we have a proper DCM in our squad other than Tiote – that’s an area for recruitment IMO.

I thought going forward we were excellent yesterday. Mainly due to Sissoko with some outstanding assists yesterday. But even with a 2 goal cushion, we just look so vulnerable. Norwich hit the post twice and had one cleared off the line – so we rode our luck at times too.
But looking forward to next weekend. We are going to have to really focus on being a solid defensive unit, coz Sunderland at home will press the **** out of us. Fat Sam will not want to loose this one. We can score goals with those 4 forwards, but we need to defend better.
Discipline could be an issue too, with concerns about Colback, Tiote, Janmaat and Mitrovic in particular.

      (Quote)

  24. It seems obvious now that we have much better attacking players than defenders. So, set the tactics to attack. I don’t really care that much that Sissoko can’t tackle if he sets up 4 goals. I also don’t care if he loses the ball 1 in 3 times when he tries to beat a man. It is the other 2 times that will help us win games.

Sissoko showed yesterday what he is capable of and why managers think so highly of him – and why he thinks so highly of himself 🙂 Repeat that against the Mackems and we might be on our way. Perez and Mitrovic look like they can develop into a handy partnership as well.

      (Quote)

  25. Sharpy: it will be classic to see Fat Sam’s face when we beat the Mackems. Those jowls, that scornful look, him chewing his gum to death.

It couldn’t have been set up any better. Partial redemption for Fat Sam and becoming a Mackem hero or everybody in Newcastle laughing at the King of the SMBs.

      (Quote)

  26. Eric – I remember a few weeks back you asked me what Gini was like. That was it. You also disagreed with me when I said we were a counter attacking side. Looks that way to me. If they have to play their way through a packed defence they’re useless. When they only have 3-4 defenders to get past – deadly. The speed Gini and Sissoko break with is tremendous. Thought Mitros goal was the best. Reminded me of Shearer..

      (Quote)

  27. Georgio: I must have been having a bad NUFC day. 6 months of Carver and then no wins until yesterday will do that to you. We have seen what we are capable of so lets keep it up.

      (Quote)

  28. Georgio: you may be right that we are a counter attacking side but I would rather we just go for it. The other team can’t score when they are in their own half and we do some dodgy defending at times.

      (Quote)

  29. I thought the Yanks might be getting to know a bit about football but sometimes I doubt it. Yesterday in the pub a Grandpa Simpson lookalike in a Toon top said we should be the 3rd best team in the Country because we have the 3rd biggest population. I mentioned Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds and that London only really had 3 big teams so his logic was a bit flawed. His retort was that if you include Sunderland then Newcastle is a bigger city. I sort of gave up trying to reason with this guy after that. Maybe next weekend he will see how close the NUFC and SMB fans are 🙂

      (Quote)

  30. On a much better note. One of the Chicago Mags who has no connection to the city of Newcastle at all is going to the Derby. He has been to the Swansea and Citeh games so far. He’s going for night out in Whitley Bay as well 🙂

      (Quote)

  31. Eric
I make things up? Did you not say prior to the Norwich game you would sack him? Yes or No?

      (Quote)

  32. Gashley
I’ve never wrote any of the players off. They haven’t had time to be written off. Unlike some on here, who would sack people before they had time to hang their coats up.
    YKWYA; -)

      (Quote)

  33. Troysta: I think I said I would give Steve until Christmas. If you can find me saying sack him after Norwich, then well done, you will have scored a few little brownie points.

      (Quote)

  34. Troy says @110: “I’ve never wrote any of the players off. They haven’t had time to be written off. Unlike some on here, who would sack people before they had time to hang their coats up.”

You mean like that poster Troysta, who says McClaren’s judgement should be after 10 games.

    YCMIU.

      (Quote)

  35. Eric Sykes October 17, 2015 at 14:12

    Troysta:

Yes I would sack him today because I didn’t want him in the first place. I tried to give him a chance but I didn’t want him in the first place. So, yes.

Is that good enough evidence Psychs. I don’t make it up. It’s just you say things you can’t remember. That was before the Norwich game.

      (Quote)

  36. Eric

Yip. 10 games I said and then judge. He’s on the up now and I hope my judgement is that we keep him. Another game to go though.

      (Quote)

  37. I think what I said Troysta was that Christmas was the time to sack McClaren if we were bottom of the league because that would hopefully give a new manager enough time to turn it around and have the transfer window as well.

I did say that McClaren has a tendency to walk away and might do if we lost a couple more games. However, he subsequently said he was safe until the end of the season and I mentioned that as well.

To use an acronym to describe you: YCMIU – You COULD Make It UP. Because that’s what you do best.

      (Quote)

  38. Troy: 🙂 🙂 🙂 I did give a reason though. Because I didn’t want him in the first place. Sorry about the comment @115. You were right and I was wrong.

      (Quote)

  39. Psychs

That is your actual post I’ve printed. I asked you dire tky before the Norwich game whether you would sack McLaren. There’s no ifs or buts. It’s what you said.
You’re not jumping ship now are you?
We won 6-2 so you want to give him more time? YCMIU 😆

      (Quote)

  40. I see you’ve acknowledged I didn’t make it up, I was right and you were wrong. Well done. I only hope Gashley now does the same. 😆

      (Quote)

  41. Troysta: It was the international break, there are better managers out there and Schteve was saying dumb stuff. What do you expect, I am a Newcastle fan and sometimes my emotions get the better of me. We can’t all be robots and super-logical all the time like you 🙂 But, if we lose to the Mackems I assume you will call for Steve’s head? It is 10 games after all and we will be in the relegation zone.

      (Quote)

  42. Since we play them next I will say this again. What connection does Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights have to Sunderland and The Stadium of *****? Good music, bad town. “The Stadium of Light” – it is like an adveritsing man woke up after a wet dream and said, yeah, Stadium of Light. That hasn’t been done before…

And Black Cats. **** me, that is so stupid. If you haven’t seen the explanation then google it for a laugh.

      (Quote)

  43. I am not trying to say that Newcastle is better than Sunderland, although it obviously is.

But why Prokofiev, why Stadium of ***** and Black Cats? Why not something to do with tradition, locality or heritage?

I mean, we play Dire Straits and Blaydon Races and you play Prokofiev and call your ground the Stadium of Light, FFS. “The New Roker Park” would have been better. I know you just live up the road but there is a world of difference. You lot had a fcking vote for your nickname!!! A fuvking vote for your nickname. How lame is that? These lame arsed names and music choices explain it all.

      (Quote)

  44. And another thing. Why would I want to look up Walkers Crisps on facebook? It says to do it on the packet. Do I want to “friend” them? Do I really want to see all of their new flavours and get e-mails from them?

      (Quote)

  45. @eric. It was a tribute to the miners of the region why they chose “The Stadium of Light” a nice touch I think 😯

      (Quote)

  46. My head says Big Sam will have them pumped up, so it will be 1-1
But my heart says we have too much for their centerhalves.. 3-2 to the toon…

      (Quote)

  47. If it was really a tribute to miners then call it “Miner’s Park”. Not a stupid PR man’s copy of a name in Portugal.

      (Quote)

  48. OK then Mark: explain it. I have seen 3 explanations of The Black Cats. They had a vote for it and militia men on the Wear Estuary apparently won although it sounds like a made up explanation to me.

      (Quote)

  49. I have a few unwashed mates. This is the one a couple belive it derives from..

There is a long historical link between black cats and Sunderland, including the “Black Cat Battery”, an Artillery battery based on the River Wear.[1
Around the early 19th century, the southern side of the River Wear contained four gun batteries, which guarded the river mouth during the Napoleonic wars.[154] In 1805, the battery was manned by local militia, the Sunderland Loyal Volunteers, one of whom was a cooper by trade named Joshua Dunn. He was said to have “fled from the howling of an approaching black cat, convinced by the influence of the full moon and a warming dram or two that it was the devil incarnate”. From that point onwards the John Paul Jones Battery was known as the Black Cat Battery.

      (Quote)

  50. Mark: but they had to have a vote 🙂 And there are other explanations. Sorry to hear you have Mackem friends.

      (Quote)

  51. Do black cats howl? First I have heard of it. I thought they meowed. A wolf howls, a bull bellows, a sheep baas, a lion roars. A CAT HOWLS ???? 🙂 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  52. Mark: I knew they got their strip from the red and white but didn’t know it was miners. But who gives a ****?

      (Quote)

  53. Gashley: I don’t think Mackem’s are bad people. I have never met one in Chicago after living here for 25 years. It sort of explains the phrase “have you ever met a Mackem in Milan” (well it doesn’t really, but it shows they don’t travel well. A bit like tomatoes).

BUT. I went to a club in London and the barman was a Mackem. I asked him where he was from and he said Newcastle. I could hear the accent and I said he was a black cat and he had no idea what I was talking about.

      (Quote)

  54. Aye, I was in Milan that night 😀
The guy was probably not a football fan, I wouldn’t admit I was from Sunderland either 😛

      (Quote)

  55. But Mark: have you admitted to Troy that you haven’t admitted what he said you said? He will Troy you rotten until you do 🙂 When did Troy become a verb 🙂

Anyway he was right about what I said – for once 🙂

      (Quote)

  56. I looked it up in the Oxford English Dicksionary:

    To Troy; a verb:

To defend Pardew like it is his life’s work.
To say McClaren should be judged after 10 games and then change his mind.
To say Carver would be appointed NUFC manager.

      (Quote)

  57. Well the storey I was told as a kid living in the west end was the name. of black cats was given to them because during the war with the Scots they were the only ones that fought with the Scots and supported them finally beaten in battle in Northumberland, hence there name was blackened from then on

      (Quote)

  58. Icedog: I told you that none of them know where it was from. Protecting the Wear, befriending Scots, having cats “howl”. And, the Stadt del Shitto 🙂 C’mon that is just a joke name.

Icedog: see Gashley @133 because that was another explanation. I think they just voted on it and the cat won.
