Pavel is a Geordie!

RIP Pav
RIP Pav
Sad news has been released regarding former United goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek who has sadly passed away.

The 47-year-old collapsed while out running when in his native Czech Republic shortly before Christmas and has been in a medically induced coma ever since.

Capped 49 times for his country, Pavel’s career took in stints at Banik Ostrava, Sheffield Wednesday, Brescia, Cosenza, Portsmouth and West Ham but it is his time with Newcastle United, where he spent the bulk of his professional career, which will be mostly remembered. Two stints at St James’ Park yielded a total of 152 appearances starting in the Second Division under Jim Smith back in 1991 and ending with Kenny Dalglish in 1998 taking in the rollercoaster ride that was ‘the Entertainers’ era with Kevin Keegan.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those closest to Pavel and I can only hope that we raise the roof in tribute to him at our next match.

RIP Pav.

  1. You view – 😆 his poor missus probably gets to deal with his huffs on a Saturday afternoon – patience of a saint I bet 😆

Eric – what about trying Riviere as a CF alongside Mitrovic. That’s his natural position and he certainly wasn’t a lone CF as was tried. Round pegs in rounds holes – that’s what we need right now. That’s what the likes of Leicester and Palace do and get success. Their players aren’t so much better than ours – they just play to their strengths and have players in their natural positions.

  2. We have all rightly criticised Carr and Charnley for the transfer policy, but really, who is available in the PL who has scored a few and will not cost an arm and a leg? The time to act was in the summer and we have probably missed the boat and will have to go continental again.

  3. Sharpy, I know we didn’t buy Mitro for his defensive skills but it’s a team game and everyone needs to chip in at corners and defending set pieces and the lad has done really well in those situations. I never saw that from Rivi to be honest. Yes he should of buried a few of his chances but the whole team are under ridiculous pressure thanks to our failed transfer policy.

      (Quote)

  4. I’d actually like to see Perez and Mitro given the two front roles with someone else given the number 10, Gini or SDJ.
    Remind me of Shearer/Bellamy

  5. The stat that we did not get a penalty in 2015 shows the Refs do have a bias against us. It is not just a statistical anomaly. Just like when Man U got so many awarded at Old Trafford and none for the opposition.

      (Quote)

  6. For example the Cattermole decision changed the game and could have changed our season. Shearer used to score 6 or 7 pens a season.

      (Quote)

  7. Kim – I wasn’t dismissing Mitrovics contribution when it comes to defending, I just mean we need him scoring goals more than defending the first post or whatever.
As for Riviere not doing it, as I say, maybe that’s coz he was given a different role when he was in the team. I agree that there is a lot of pressure on too many young players. I fear we might not see a change to the policy this window though.

  8. Austin would help for sure 18goals when QPR went down so would keep us up no way simple reason we need better defenders so that any good striker is not wasted,we have improved a little in defence,my worry would be if we did score a goal or two the pressure on the defence would increase,I don’t think they could handle that, that’s why we need another good defender

  9. Just looking at the transfer talk. Leicester look to be on the verge of signing young Gray from Birmingham – 19yr old winger with a buy out clause of around £3.5m. Now while I would prefer him over Saivet, if he does go to Leicester they currently have Nathan Dyer on loan there from Swansea.
Dyers game time may be restricted further with Grays arrival, and I think Dyer would be idea for what we need. A right winger with loads of experience and has a goal in him.

      (Quote)

  10. Austin would score goals. But if we want a CF with PL experience who will get us goals and give everything every single game – a leader on the field and in the dressing room – Andy Carroll.

I know he gets mentioned every window and I know he’s injury prone and would probably cost around £15m so it’s highly unlikely – but I think he would be a real statement signing.
Trouble is, could our medical team keep him fit?

      (Quote)

  11. SHARPY that’s the big problem with Andy keeping him fit they don’t seem to be able to do that at West/H yes he would love to come back but its to much of a risk imo,I remember another big Hunk of a centre forward that was good when fit,Duc Ferguson he had to rap in playing early as he couldn’t keep fit Andy is of the same mould, pity

      (Quote)

  12. Ice – I know mate, and I have always been against the idea of bringing him back to be honest. But of the forwards I think we could get, I keep coming back to him despite the risks.

      (Quote)

  13. Pressing their midfield worked well. But then we couldn’t finish as usual. Missing the net seems to be our specialty.

      (Quote)

  14. No medical team in the world can keep Carroll fit. Shame as he’s 26 now I think. Hasn’t played much in 3 years

      (Quote)

  15. Ice – I think he’d give blood, sweat and tears before that happened though. We lack leaders on the field but I think he would be one.
Regardless of what we think of Saylor, he at least plays with passion (when he does play) and I reckon Carroll would be the same.

The above link is interesting. Worldwide advertising is a huge benefit to all the Prem clubs. Ashley knows exactly what it brings to SD. It will be in the tens of millions. The club make more than enough to be better than they are. Ashley is his own worst enemy. He has no clue who to hire and who to fire. That’s obvious from what happened last season with Mr. Bonehead himself Johnny Carver. Now we have Mr. Bonehead II and III (Charnley and McLaren).

      (Quote)

  17. So a starting 11 with Saylor and Carroll in it then Sharpy? How often would that happen? Twice a season? Come on be serious lad. We need help, not an anchor around our neck.

      (Quote)

  18. G2 – I didn’t say a starting 11 with Saylor and Carroll with it and I’ve already mentioned their injury history. So instead of misquoting people feel free to offer forward your own suggestion lad.

      (Quote)

  19. An 18th place club is what we are. There is no way to argue around, under, or over that. We are dead poor. We remain dead poor now past the halfway mark. With the type of leadership available we will be dead poor in the future. That is the Ashley legacy to the club.

      (Quote)

  20. Thanks Sharpy, I’ll do that. But you do want to bring Carroll back apparently? To what end? To see him sit with his legs up collecting 70K a week for playing 5 or 6 matches and possibly scoring 2 goals? We need a proven scorer not a gimp (a Geordie one though he may be). We have the money available. We had had large profits over the last 2 seasons. We just don’t spend it properly. No offense to you Sharpy but we definitely don’t need Andy Carroll back in my view. I hope the club realize that. And Saylor should have been sold off for whatever we could get years ago.

      (Quote)

  21. Repeat after me Ashley: “We’re in 18th place after 20 matches and I’m a hopeless owner.”

      (Quote)

  22. Andy Carroll over the last 3 seasons with West Ham: 45 appearances, 10 goals. Out of 114 matches in the league and possibly 10-15 cup games he’s managed 45 appearances. And for the measly price of about 12M pounds in wages….Make your own decision on him lads.

      (Quote)

  23. Think about the wages Gashley mate. It’s not just the fee. And think about him sitting with a cast and crutches for weeks and months on end.

      (Quote)

  24. G2 – I understand all you are saying, and have felt the same. But if I could swap Carroll for Cisse or Riviere then I would.

      (Quote)

  25. Kim – course they would, they got a stadium for nowt. Might as well try their luck with Carroll as well 🙄

      (Quote)

  26. Fair enough Sharpy. I don’t understand your position on Carroll. He has been poor everywhere he’s been since he left us. Liverpool soon got rid even though they paid a fortune for him. He’s laughing all the way to the bank every week. As for Big Mike our Saviour: remember how Mike used to say how much he admired Arsenal? And by jingo look at us now. The spitting image of them!!! An amazing transformation Mike. Tell us how you did it again please.

      (Quote)

  27. I think that Dalglish got the sack simply because of the Carroll fiasco. It made the owners realize he was out of touch with the modern game. Carroll was a disaster waiting to happen with his glass legs. But he has an amazing fortune from very little football played if he has saved any of it. Ten goals in 3 seasons in his prime. What’s he going to be like in his 30’s?

      (Quote)

  28. Mike Ashley has truly saved us from mediocrity….By making us much worse. Thanks be to you Mike!!! May the Lord **** in your popcorn!!!

      (Quote)

  29. Let’s see now…..Arsenal 13 wins from 20, Newcastle 4 wins. Yes I can see how much we resemble them now!! 😈

      (Quote)

  30. Aresene Wenger winning percentage with Arsenal: 57.63. Our last 2 head coaches wining percentage: Johnny C.: 15%. Wally: 20%. Yes I can see the similarity there as well!!!!

      (Quote)

  31. If experience brings composure, Rivière must have missed that particular boat!

Mitro has a proven goal scoring record – he scored 30 goals last season in a league similar to Ligue 1. Rivière on the other hand, has nothing to suggest he’s capable.

But anyway, it’s the transfer policy that needs to change. Yes take a punt on a Mitrovic, but also bring in a Austin or even a Carroll. Bring in Gini but also look at a Shelvey and the same for Thuavin and Townsend. These young lads will also getting better by playing with these players and learning about the league and how to cope.

      (Quote)

  32. Stu – so the fact that Riviere had a better conversion rate than Falcao at Monaco is discounted then.
Luuk De Jong was banging goals in before he came to us and has since, but looked bang average with us.
What have all 3 forwards got in common – we haven’t played to any of their strengths.

      (Quote)

  33. Sharpy – You have seen Flacao haven’t you since his knee problem? Super Mac would have a better conversion rate than him today. He was nowhere near the first team until he got injured so we shouldn’t compare to him.

      (Quote)

  34. Stu – in the PL maybe, but Falcao was one of the best forwards in the French league.

Gash – yeah and they played Riviere as a lone striker where he was constantly isolated.

      (Quote)

  35. Stu – conversion rate I said. Cisse had a better conversion rate than Costa & Aguero despite them having more goals.
The conversion rate being goals against actual mins on the pitch.

      (Quote)

  36. Come on Sharpy, that’s a totally stupid way of judging someone in afraid. Especially against a player who was one of the best in the world. If prefers look at their goal to game ratios as it gives you a much better way of judging players. Unless you’d rather have Cisse than Aguero?

      (Quote)

  37. Cisse could be out for 3 months. Reckon that leaves us possibly even requiring two strikers!!!

      (Quote)

  38. Stu – I’m not judging him against another mate. I am simply trying to be fair and balanced in judging the lad. If of those 44 games, 20 were actually the last 10mins of the game, then 14 in 44 isn’t giving a true reflection is it. That’s not saying he’s better than Falcao or Cisse is better than Aguero. It’s simply saying that where 14 in 44 looks not great, it actually reflected a very good conversion rate. In fairness, it’s a more realistic way of judging a player coz he can only score if he’s on the pitch.

It’s like this stat which striker has scored the most goals in 2015 – Ingalo at Watford heads the list. But for half that time he was in the Championship. Does that make him a better player than Kane who has fewer goals but all are in the PL.

      (Quote)

  39. It’s a ridiculous way to judge and compare players. The three examples you give prove that beyond doubt. Falcao in his prime or Riviere? Cisse or Aguero/Costa? Kane or Ignalo? Falcao, Aguero, Costa and Kane are all the best players in that list. There’s generally a reason why the other players don’t get the minutes on the pitch and it’s normally because they’re not as good as the others.

      (Quote)

  40. I said Cisse would be out until at least after the transfer window closed after the second scan – second scans are never good news and from what I have seen are to determine if an operation is needed or not. All the talk was maybe we would sell him in January and get a replacement. So, no news for 2 weeks and then Schteve just casually drops it into the conversation that Cisse is out for 2-3 months. Typical NUFC “communication”.

So now we have only one fit centre foward it is time for them to pull the trigger. Especially as it is highly likely Cisse will be gone in the summer. This is his second major injury in 2 years and we don’t need another sick note.

I will say it again, they think we are stupid when they give us half truths and misinformation about injuries. 2 players out for 4 months available after a week of training 🙂 – give me a fckin break. Perhaps, just perhaps on the bench for the FA Cup, although they would be stupid to risk Aarons for that.

      (Quote)

  41. And I hope nobody gives me **** about a new forward holding back the development of Mitro. Or Riviere, Armstrong or Toney for that matter. We need a goalscorer and we need one now.

I would bring Armstrong back for the FA Cup tie and then loan him back to Cov when we make a signing.

      (Quote)

  42. Armstrong wouldn’t even need to pack all his stuff up and he could look at it as a mini break to see the team, family and friends. Cov is only 3 hours away so it is not a big deal. I lived there for 3 years, and believe me he will be glad to have a couple of weeks at home.

      (Quote)

  43. Back to injuries. Isn’t it amazing that as soon as we look like getting one or 2 back others drop like flies – Cisse and Anita. There is something seriously wrong with our medical department, training methods, training pitches, physios, Dr.s, something, as this happens every year.

      (Quote)

  44. It also makes a mockery of the 25 man squad talk as we never have more than about 16 available. Is Curtis Good on it? There is a free place to start with, if he is.

Oh, I forgot about Krul. Since he is out for the season we can remove him from the squad list this window and then reinstate him in the summer. The squad is by no means full no matter what Mr. Charnley says.

      (Quote)

  45. Actually, send Mike’s copter for Armstrong. He will be at Benton in an hour and we have already said he will not play for Cov in the Cups. That makes too much sense though. They haven’t even extended his loan yet so this is absolutely plausible.

      (Quote)

  46. Eric, most knew we needed an additional striker at the start of the season and now Cisse will miss most of the season does that mean we need two or bring Arma back and buy one?

      (Quote)

  47. Stuart: we will buy one I think and will probably keep the option to bring Armstrong back. What I am getting at is it is always the same at NUFC. A player is injured and there is no information about the injury until it slips out. Then there is a setback so the initial comeback date is extended. Then they issue a totally optimistic estimate of the match they will return on and then they don’t get selected until 2 weeks after that. For long term injuries they let the players rehab where they want (France, Algeria, UAE) which makes no sense to me. Our physios and Dr.s should be with them every step of the way. They are employees and have contracts for FFS, an injury is not an excuse for a holiday.

      (Quote)

  48. I also think we will hear that we have 4 options as a number 10 – Wiji, de Jong, Perez and Riviere – so really we are set for strikers.

They are correct that the January window is difficult but that is why it was so stupid not to buy more quality in the summer.

      (Quote)

  49. January window isn’t a great window to do business in, they’re spot on, but were suffering from years of neglect and we reap what we sow unfortunately

      (Quote)

  50. So the press reckon that Palace are favourites to get Austin. Oh dear! Can’t blame him personally.

Who’s next on the list? Ain’t anyone who has proved they can score goals in the PL that’s for sure. Berihino? Lacazette? Dos? All apparently £15m +. Can’t see Jabba paying it even if it will save us a fortune.

Maybe they should bring forward their summer transfer plans just to keep us in the league? Problem with that of course is that the other clubs will improve yet again next season and go past us as we need to spend a lot of cash just to stay in the PL. Were in serious trouble if you ask me.

Maybe it’s time for Jabba to either out his money where his mouth is or just sell up and admit he can’t run a club.

      (Quote)

  51. Stu – we all said it before the summer transfer window even opened.
Everyone and his dog could see we needed 5 – 7 new players brought in in the summer. We needed to spend nearer £100M not 50. We needed to clear out the dead wood and perma crocks.
I said we would be bottom 3 at xmas without the right investment and deserve to be there.
Its too late now. The players we need aren’t available and those that are, wont come to a relegation struggling team.
We need at least 4 new players minimum all with experience and quality.
Its just not going to happen.
We will be cut adrift and relegated by the end of march. Its inevitable imho

      (Quote)

  52. As for Carroll, why would he leave WHam right now ? They are 6th in the league, pushing for a euro spot, moving to a new stadium and in London.
He is fit and playing again and scoring goals.
He would have to be mental to even contemplate coming back to this basket case of a club.
I dont believe it will ever happen.

      (Quote)

  53. we will probably spend another £50M this month on another bunch of foreign tat in the vain hope that something clicks.
    It wont though.
    we’re buggered already imho.
Read it and weep fat man.

      (Quote)

  54. ok I would take Loic Remy on loan, with the option to make permanent if we survive. He can score goals no problems. But we need more than just him.
I would see that as a good start though. 😉

      (Quote)

  55. This is the problem, BB. If we decide to bring forward the summer transfers that means next summer buy nobody and everyone over takes us again. There’s no easy or cheap way out of this. Jabba is going to need to spend some serious money and if they club don’t have it he needs to cough up himself, otherwise it’s only a matter of time before we go down. Unless of course he’s thinking of selling the club after this season…
