Game On! NUFC v MUFC

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
Good day everyone. I hope you’re all locked in and ready for the game tonight.

Manchester United never seem to give us an easy rude and I’m sure that will be the case again this evening.

However the need for Newcastle to pull off an unlikely result is massive and doing it in a game where we’re essentially expected to get nothing would be a very welcome bonus. But then we’ll have to see what happens.

At the time of writing the match preview (which you can see here) we hadn’t signed Henri Saivet and the deal was still at the medical stage. Subsequently he signed and it appears that we’re also close to completing the signing of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea.

A welcome boost but neither will be able to assist us this evening anyway so instead we turn to the ‘older’ heads.

For the team news check out the bottom of this article. I’ll try and publish it one hour prior to kick-off but I have a poorly boy at home to sort out so may be delayed.

In terms of broadcasting we are live on BT Sport which is generally good news if you’re looking for a stream. You can normally find a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

  1. SHARPY @447 Spurs will not get him for sure, talk among reporters if true is Puils and Wba. found out he had been tapped up by Spurs in a very sly way the kid kicked off as they have said they will sell him at some point but to any club but Spurs I heard that from a reporter that you know that lives in our village, trouble is finding a club willing to pay the price they want, never know they might relent for the right money

  2. Did everybody see that van Gaal called a Sun reporter from Newcastle a “fat man” and The Sun have started a feud against Man U. It is about time they got some negative press as the papers have been kissing their behind for 50 years. I am sure someone on here knows Neil Custis. I find it very funny he is saying he has a bad knee and put on 2 stone because of it. He should blame it on the real culprit – beer and pies. He is getting a personal trainer though, so I am glad he told us that.

  3. I had a herniated disc a few years ago and could hardly walk for months. I didn’t put on 2 stone though, I just eased off the beer and pies a bit. Neil Custis doth protest too much, methinks.

  4. I agree with Ice. Spurs are sure favourites for Berahino. They wanted him in the summer so will want him now and I imagine he would choose them over us.

  5. Looks like a done deal for Tiote 8mil for a 30 yr old that imo has lost the drive he had he’s played very little in a season and a half and I always feel he a red card waiting to happen when things get tough on the pitch, let’s hope one of the new kids on the block fit in quick

      (Quote)

  6. Ice@437, Yeah I know, but with him they have a proven goal scorer with others there that always seem to score against us, do they need a striker?

      (Quote)

  7. It’s not Tiote who should be punted on but Anita and Colback. The money is only decent if we spend it wisely. We got good money for Andy Carroll but for most seasons since we have been fighting relegation.
Midfield should be Gini, Moussa and JJ with a wide left player. My preferred choice would be Aarrons.
Janmaat would have to be more disciplined and choose the moment to attack rather than just bombing on.

      (Quote)

  8. Tiote has played 141 times for us and scored 1 goal. I thought he played well against Man U but we still let in 2 from open play and one courtesy of Mike Dean. Even another 1 or 2 goals per season would be useful so I am not heartbroken to see him go.

Charnley is pretty good at the wheeling and dealing, I just wish we would fix the footballing bit. Let’s see how the 2 new lads get on because at first blush it looks like the Fat Man and his toady are doing good business.

  9. KIM some players come to their prime from 30 to32 then downhill quite quick, but not in the case of Tiote its a fast mobile place on the field and players like him start diving in and we know the result of that these days when they lose a yard or two

      (Quote)

  10. Ice – I didn’t know about Spurs foul play. I think Pullis is the type of person that would sooner take £5m less than sell to a club who tries to do his legs.

£8m for Tiote is a great deal. He’s been a good Carr find for £3.5m, but time for change.

      (Quote)

  11. If true then 8million for Tiote is the best outgoing deal we Will have done in years . Lets face it hè Has been in decline for 2 seasons now and i don’t honestly think hè Will be a miss . Would love us too shift Marveaux and Obertan this window too .

      (Quote)

  12. Didn’t Tiote take the pip over something and miss a hell of a lot of games we got to know nothing about him for a long time only that he had a injury the club was trying to sort,oh yer

  14. Sharpy, Don’t mention City mate, they just can’t get into the swing of things, they were proper good last season too. It’s amazing how much tougher the fizzy pop is.

  15. Ice, yeah I just realised it looks wrong 😆 Honestly there is terrible problems round here. As you know I live a 5 min walk from ashton gate and our feckless mayor has a green agenda and he has made it residence parking only on the right side of north street in southville (yuppy land). North street is now all pay and display only and it’s ruining business for all the traders there. The roads coming off the left side of north street like mine our not residents parking so everyone parks there now and it’s one big car park. Now it’s always been chaos on matchdays anyway but now it’s 10 times worse, plus it’s constant cause of all the bars in north street. Now I mention this because City have just expanded the stadium with a massive tall new stand, and can now take 27,000 and we don’t have parking capacity for it. Locals are doing their nuts and our mayor George Ferguson is a hate figure all over the city cause of all the parking problems and 20mph zones and bike lanes he’s put in place. On top of this City are desperate not to get relegated due to the new stadium update and that in a nut shell is why Keith Dawe has sacked Cotterole. The local residents who aren’t into footy would be more than happy to city drop like the proverbial stone. The whole thing is a bloody mess if you ask me.

  16. Kimtoon: it sounds just like Chicago 🙂 Our Mayor sold off the parking meters to Goldman Sachs for $1 billion and they tripled the rates after a year. If you make a right turn on red it is a $200 fine and you have to drive 20 miles an hour by all the parks otherwise that costs you $100. They don’t post any signs to tell you though.

I am leaving for Thailand for a month in 30 mins. I did the same last year and there was a big snow. The ever-so-nice locals shoveled their cars out and dumped it 3 feet high front and back of my car. I had to wait 2 weeks for it to thaw 🙂

      (Quote)

  17. Eric, I have a disabled bay out front for lewis, when I go out I now put cones out to emphasise to other drivers that it’s a disabled bay, it is rather faded now like. They just move the cones and park up 🙄 I have had stand up rows numerous times with drivers taking the **** like that.

      (Quote)

  18. Thanks Kimtoon: I don’t drive that much so it was actually quite amusing to see my car shoveled in. The other thing they do in Chicago since we get a lot of snow, is that when they shovel their cars out they will put out lawn furniture, or old pots and pans to save the space. God help anybody who parks there as I think would key your car or worse.

  19. I had to put a tax disc on my car and went out yesterday and the doors were frozen shut. I had to give it to a friend to put on when it thaws. Luckily it will be 29-30 degrees where I am going.

      (Quote)

  20. Eric, my car was keyed a while back, probs by one of the drivers I had a row with and my number plates were stolen in September too.

      (Quote)

  21. Eric, yep that’s my saying 😆 I always get back up again though, never let the buggers grind you down.

  22. Alestars lose to bottom club CC FC and hitmans army won a game at last. Such was the topsy turvy round just gone.

The bubble has burst on Alestars over the holiday season. 2 losses in a row, and now the mighty Roar are on their case. Newkie must be quaking in his boots.

    1 Alestars 49
    2 Newbriscastle Roar 49
    3 Balotellitubbies 39
4 Macas Pony and Trap 38
    5 Born Winner FC 36
    6 Dubai Toon United 36
    7 Joshua 36
    8 Natalie Sawyer Fan 34

And just below that lot are the rapidly improving Aussie Mags.

  23. I sent pictures of the street after a big snow to friends in California a couple of years ago. They were in stitches as the parking places were being saved by kitchen tables, chairs, broken lamps and bird cages – I assume the bird must have died or it would have been frozen to its perch.

I think this is a Chicago thing as I haven’t seen it anywhere else.

  24. I see WBA have said they won’t be selling Berahino in January unless they get a offer they can’t refuse. Next…

      (Quote)

  25. Stu – which roughly translates as ‘we are desperate to get rid of him this month, but have yet to receive an actual offer’.

      (Quote)

  26. Sharpy – I dount it. They said something pretty similar in the summer and they ended up keeping him.

      (Quote)

  27. Although it looks like Townsend might be moving closer. We have spoken to his agent recently and he’s keen.

      (Quote)

  28. Stu – they kept him in a hope that he’d sort himself out, get his head down and aim to make that England squad – but that hasn’t happened.
Pullis can’t be happy having an asset like that in his squad that is making himself impossible to select. I think he’d much sooner have the money to bring a new player in – a Peter Crouch or John Walter who he has worked with before maybe.
Plus, I reckon Berahino might just force the issue as well like.

      (Quote)

  29. He tried to force the issue las time too but Pulis is a stubborn old ******. I don’t think he will leave unless wba want him to. He might still leave but it won’t be for £18m.

      (Quote)

  30. I know that Sharpy is keen on Townsend but I am not so sure. I will go and jump on my band waggon and say we should give Callum Roberts a try first. A promising talent IMO given the right encouragement. Trouble is NUFC don,t give our reserves much encouragement we prefer to pick mediocre “purples” or buy rubbish from other premiership teams even if they can’t get on the bench.

      (Quote)

  31. Stu – im not saying he’ll be with us, but I reckon Berahino will leave WBA this window for less than £20m.

      (Quote)

  32. Groucho – I’m completely in favour of signing Townsend mate, I reckon he’d be excellent for us. But I’m also all for bringing players through and them getting their chance.
I would want Townsend to replace the likes of Obertan, Marveaux or Gouffran – players on the higher salaries that contribute very little – not to block the younger lads.

      (Quote)

  33. Groucho – We’re not in a position to be giving young untried players a chance unfortunately. Townsend is an established international and i would be very happy if we got him.

      (Quote)

  34. I must say though that it looks like a real admission that the transfer policy has been badly wrong with these possible moves. we should applaud them for making the decision on Thauvin quickly and not dragging it out.

      (Quote)

  35. Hope we don’t get Townsend..Has shown nothing to suggest he will succeed with us.. played 5 or 6 good games about two seasons back and has done **** all since… Spurs will be laughing at us if we splash the cash on that fella..

      (Quote)

  36. So you think having 5 or 6 good games gets you in the England starting 11? You obviously didn’t see him play for England where he was Englands best player most of the time he played.

      (Quote)

  37. Stuart… yep.. the English squad is desperate for good players….

Sharpy 😆 why can’t you just talk about football for once!

      (Quote)

  38. Is Townsend better than Thauvin, Gouffy, Marv, Obertan and Aarons – our only wingers? Erm yes. By a Country Mile. So lets snap him up please.

      (Quote)

  39. Aussie@502 – totally agree mate. Promises a lot, achieves little.
Someone said he offers something we don’t have in the squad, what is that exactly ? yes he is fast and can run, but he can’t cross a ball to save his life.. ring any bells ? Obertan can do the same but is no good and neither is Townsend. If he was any good he would be in the Spurs team week in week out

      (Quote)

  40. So you are quite prepared to swap an average player for an average player… nice succession plan! 😯
I didn’t admit he was a good player, just that the English team will take anyone that looks like a half decent player… even if it is only over a few games..

      (Quote)

  41. Yes because Spurs are so sh&t. Townsend played 35 games last season and averages a goal or assist every 157 minutes. That’s better than anybody currently on our books.

If he was getting into this Spurs side week in week out we wouldn’t have a chance of signing him. They are 4th in the league with a chance of winning the league this season. So if you think we should only be signing players who are in teams going for the title you a going to be disappointed.

You seriously think he’s as bad as Obertan, Gouffran or Thauvin? You don’t think he is an upgrade on them?

      (Quote)

  43. There is a lot of competition and very good players at Spurs. I think people perceive Townsend to be shut because he has bags of talent and does not produce every single time. But he does produce regularly when played and is better by far than any of our current wingers.

      (Quote)

  44. Ime not saying Townsend isn’t a good player but looking at his record he’s only played 30 odd PL.game he has been loaned out 11 times and he’s still quite young and cannot get a game for Spurs why???? yes he’s fast
ime not sure on him don’t know why its just a feeling

      (Quote)

  45. I’m not for one second saying that Townsend is as technically gifted as Ben Arfa. But I reckon with regular first team football, his stats for goals & assists would be closer to Bennys than Obertans.

      (Quote)

  46. Townsend last loan was when he was 21. He is 24 now. Last season he played 35 times for Spurs as posted above with a decent return. He has averaged a goal or assist in under every 2 full games in Europe and a goal or assist every 3 full games games in the PL. Yes he could deliver more but he needs to step down from Spurs and be given a fair run of games together instead of bit parts. He clearly can deliver at PL level. 64 appearances innthe PL shows he has the experience and his England record is good too.

We say we want the cheap foreign mercenaries to stop and when we go after the brightest English talent it’s not good enough….

      (Quote)

  47. Spurs have their share of expensive flops and Townsend still can’t make a go of it… Happy with the Shelvey signing but this one will end poorly if we get him..

      (Quote)

  48. No mention of sub appearances then Sham… how many starts are amongst that lot?

      (Quote)

  49. Are you seriously saying that because a player can’t get into a potential PL winning team we shouldn’t sign him?

      (Quote)

  50. , Bentaleb, Chadli, Pauliniho….. blah blah blah… all played when he was/is there…
