  1. Stu,re your question, they say the table never lies, so therefore you’d have to say yes, on balance we deserve to be where we are. We are poor at the back and weak up front, it needs addressing by the board not SM.

  2. Stu, I think we’d be hard pressed to find any manager except the world class ones that would make a dramatic difference… I do think managers of the Moyes’ ilk would have us around Watfords current position though.

We might have the 8th highest wage bill, but we don’t have a top 8 squad. I’d say our defense is in the bottom 4, Attack bottom 3 and midfield top 10.

  3. Actually, I don’t think our squad is as bad as results suggest. I think there are certainly 3 worse squads. They have no confidence and no real motivation. I think a better manager/coach would get more out of them than we are getting right now.

  4. I don’t think Leicester have the best squad. No huge name players in there. But also no big egos either. It’s the way the team interact with each other and play together rather than each individual player being a superstar. Leicester have proven that you don’t need big name players to succeed. Just a good manager that can get them hungry and working as a fluid team. Last year they were bottom. I’m probably going to get shot down for this but just an opinion.

  5. I thought Watford were lower than they are. I’ll revise that and say West Brom’s position.

If we had not signed Shelvey, I’d say our midfield was top 12 or 13.

Is McClaren what we all want? No.

Are we stuck with him? Yes.

So give him some decent players.

  6. Well I think our defence renders us a bottom 4 club, but we do have some game changers we should be building the squad around. Do that and who knows how well we might do.

  7. Janmaat, Mbemba, Shelvey, Sissoko, Perez, Gini, Mitro and probably even Tiote would get in most of them teams mentioned.

  8. Ne bother Sharpy 😀 We need a new thread and a new subject to discuss. A new signing would be good, preferably Remy – who would definitely keep us up.

  9. So I’m happy to accept Sham’s view that we have a squad that should be top 12. So why aren’t we?

      (Quote)

  10. Erm, I said the midfield is top 10 now that Shelvey has walked in during the last week. Prior to that it was 13 or 14. However the defense and attack for me is bottom 4. Overall I’d say our squad is currently a top 15. McC is not a great manager, so we are falling below that. Moyes is better than average, so he’d have us slightly above that.

Is a top 15 squad good enough from the board? No it’s not. Fault lies with them for always taking the cheap route, including with the manager. They are trying to address that, but they need to try harder this January. If McC was given a Top 10 squad, I think he’d have us around 12th, whereas Moyes would have us around 8th.

Not a huge difference but fine margins and all that. Long and short of it is our squad is not good enough. We are paying a lot of poor players a very good wage for contributing naff all. If those wages were being spent on genuine decent players, then I’d accept the wage/position comparison.

  11. When we play badly we get hammered and when we play well we still lose. But Steve’s not worried so we shouldn’t be…

      (Quote)

  12. De Jong, Thauvin, Saylor, Willo, Marv, Gouffy, Anita, Obertan, Heidara, Cisse all a comparitive waste of money. Tiote has barely managed half our games. Again not worth his wage. Colo – not worth his wage. We have far too much expensive dead wood.

  13. My mate was in the new sports direct shop at the metro centre today. Mike Ashley was being shown around.
My mate asked him why we haven’t bought a striker this window.
He told my mate it was all in hand.

    Whatever that means. 😉

  14. Troy – I’d be happier if ya mate had asked ‘when you selling up and fucking off’ and the fat lad replied ‘it’s in hand’ 🙄

  15. Stuart how can you say our squad is better than Watfords? They have beaten us three times this season, have got two forwards who can score goals. And if you mean squad players then how are theirs worse than Obertan, Williamson, S.Taylor, Thauvin, Riviere, DeJong, Gouffran etc. Before last summer who Ashley panicked and spent money on questionable signings, the squad has been weakening for years, with quality leaving and not being replaced. Our squad is *****. No coach will do significantly better with that squad than McClaren, Carver and Pardew have. One or two individuals are good yes (Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Mbemba) but that doesn’t mean our squad is good enough. Like others have said there is deadwood that needs shifting (Marveux, Obertan, Gouffran etc)

      (Quote)

  16. Ok then, our first team is better than Watfords.

But actually my main point is that under McClaren we have gone backwards since last season and we have 3 or 4 better players too since then.

      (Quote)

  17. Sham@520 – I was saying about the same for four years of Pardew’s reign, that a manager wouldn’t be brought in who would reflect the fans wish to be regular fighters around the top 8., it didn’t stop the ever present campaign though.

It’s fairly obvious I don’t like Schteve as a manager, and I find him quitea cringey, pathetic kind of character, blaming the fans for Thauvin’s poor performances was probably the last straw there, but I was definitely willing to give him time because nobody could be worse than the 5 months under Carver. I didn’t even expect much of him with the squad as it stood then, probably battling relegation for periods but finishing lower mid table. I didn’t want him when we were linked but when he was brought in I certainly wasn’t bitching and I’ve been pretty positive most of the time he’s been here, trying to find the positives in our play etc. But the fact that we’re not even achieving that with current recruitments and in fact require more even just to survive is pathetic in my book.

Anywhoo, as you say, this **** will just go over and over and I certainly can’t be arsed to be one of those “sack insert name here” people who drown on for years and years and will then turn on the next manager after a few months, which is sadly all too common amongst the fans of all clubs these days.

Fingers crossed for a win next week and I’ll be a bit chirpier, back to me old self 😆

  18. Strange lack of action in this window from us. Shelvey is a decent signing but when we were in danger before, Ashley brought in 5 if I remember correctly including Sissoko, Gouffran, and Debuchy wasn’t it? People forget that Gouffran was quite decent early on. This window could be the end of Charnley I would think but it would probably also mean we will go down. A disaster for Ashley in terms of advertising Sodall Direct.

  19. Are the rumours true that we have a deal for Townsend? It’s swirling around quite a bit now. Who would he take the place of? Probably Perez?

      (Quote)

  20. Not sure that Townsend could go straight into the team … Let’s see… He didn’t play first team footy for quite some time. Only u21 recently.

      (Quote)

  21. Are we going to continue to play 3-5-2? If so we could field Sissoko, Shelvey, Townsend, Wij and Aarons across the midfield and Perez up front with Mitro I suppose.

      (Quote)

  22. According to Journo’s close to Spurs we have agreed a fee but journo’s close to us say no. The joys of January eh…

  23. Ice there’s so much bollocks written isn’t there? Both sides tell a different story because both sides don’t want to lose face.

      (Quote)

  24. If the idea is to put pressure on the opposition with lots of pace in midfield it might work but it does nothing for our defensive liabilities. In general we score one and give up 2. Not a successful way to play the game. The strengthening should have been done properly last summer instead of messing about with players like Thauvin.

      (Quote)

  25. The mistakes that will sink us have been made and are not being fixed. Our defense is terrible and nothing is going to change there. We’re going to concede 60-65 goals or more which is a disaster.

      (Quote)

  26. ITS so typical of the useless tw@ts running us . We are screaming out for a striker That can score and it looks like we get another fooking midfielder in , why on earth do we even bother anymore . Its so pathetic its untrue we should be breaking our transfer record too get in someone like Rémy, Berhino or dropping down a division for Rohdes or even take a gamble on free signing Abdeyor but at least they can score . Wake the fuk up Ashley and charnley and smell the coffee your manager needs a goal scorer or we are DOWN ffs.

      (Quote)

  27. When he was at his best a couple of seasons ago wasn’t Townsend used as an AM from the right side? He has good pace and a decent shot. He won’t fix what is wrong with us defensively but if we are paying a fortune for him we had better play him.

      (Quote)

  28. There is no way we’ll pay 14M for Townsend TAE mate. This is crazy for a player who has injury problems and can’t even get a sniff at Spurs.

      (Quote)

  29. As I thought TAE mate. Why aren’t we looking for a good CB and striker? Why always midfielders?

      (Quote)

  30. The club is an insane asylum. Desperate, poor signings, one after another. Cabella, then Thauvin, now Saivet. What a waste of time and money.

      (Quote)

  31. Amazing how one mans Twotter ramblings can cause such fuss. Personally reckon we could end up with Townsend but that will be it.

      (Quote)

  32. True Kim we need defenders but i think McClaren wants to do what Keegan did and tell his players too just out score the opponents. McClaren is not as big a mug as Some think . Hè knows his Squad is short in quality and knows his best players are attack minded hence the signing of Shelvey a midfielder That passes forward not sideways and back . Our fullbacks cant defender for toffee but can attack , hence the 352 system that hè wants us too play ,iTS a risk but his hands are tied and hè knows it . This mess is not his fault i blame Ashley for not spending at the right times and even worse our head scout for making the same mistakes time and again ,hè does not see when a player is too small for the EPL .Anita Cabella Thauvin or look at injury records such as DeJong who had a collapsed lung while at Ajax as Well and missed loads of games the season before hè joined us . The whole club is a fucking sick joke

      (Quote)

  33. Ice, every man and his dog can see it. We must address one end at least, we either strengthen defence so at least we don’t ship goals and hope we can grab the odd goal or get in a goal scorer to give us a chance. Ideally we’d address both but it won’t happen.

      (Quote)

  34. KIM I’ve said before if they don’t want to ” buy” a c/b get Vidic in for free he’s in his 30s but knows the PL inside out was one of the best c/b m/u ever had he would do for cover until summer

      (Quote)

  35. Whilst I’m not fussed on Townsend himself, we are a club that is playing two central midfielders as wingers more often than not. If Schteve is going to continue with that then Townsend, as an actual winger, will surely help?

      (Quote)

  36. The toon have made one mistake after another but one thing I will say they bought Mitro to score the goals he was banging them in at his last club albeit it was a poorer lge but he scored at international level it just has not worked out for him here in the PL

      (Quote)

  37. tell you what like, someone somewhere has some sweet words to convince seasoned pros and internationals to come to a basket case club stuck in a serious releagation battle. money talks obviously, or Shteve has someones ear…… and Mr Charnley has pressed the big fat panic button…

      (Quote)

  38. McClaren really is something else. A whole series of failed management endeavours, yet he has still managed to get both Derby and the Toon splashing tens of millions…… and as Stuart79 has often pointed out, we’re still stuck in the bottom 3, having been there pretty much all season. Does Shteve have what it takes to make a team out of the millionaire mercenaries ? The commentators have been crying out for us to bring more British talent into our squad, well Shelvey and Townsend are both useful additions, thats for sure. Can we turn it round and pick up the necessary points… ? Still forgetting a pish poor defence which haemmorages goals…?

      (Quote)

  39. Everywhere you look at the toon, from first team, reserves, under 21s to the bairns teams. They all lose most of the time !
Do we have any teams which are any good at all, and near the top of there league ?

      (Quote)

  40. I stopped reading Troys post at 546 as soon as he mentioned “my mate”…
From there, I knew it was a load off bollocks because there is no way Troy would have any mates! 😆 😛

Hope this Townsend thing is BS… he is not the player we need at this stage of the season.. 😕

      (Quote)

  41. These moves do smack of desperation. Last summer was the time to fix the major woes of the club. Especially after Mike blatted on about staying until we win something. We should have had another CB bedded in by now and Saylor long gone. We should also have signed a senior, experienced striker. Now we’re trying to do it with kids like Mitro and Perez. Mental…..

      (Quote)

  42. Aussie
I use the term mate in the loosest sense of the word. 😆
But it is a true story. 😉

      (Quote)

  43. ha ha ha ha ha
the team is a shambles, desperately in need of an experienced striker, above all else this window.
So we have signed 2 midfielders and are now trying hard to sign a third.
    unbelievable.
    going down

      (Quote)

  44. So now Townsend is sending cryptic Tweets.

We’ve also basically said to WBA come back to us if you lower your price, if not forget it. Risky strategy and but understand their stance. Not sure I understand WBA’s to be honest. He’s hoing to be worth less in the summer and this window is really the last time they can extract very good money for a player who very rarely starts a game for them. Weird!

Anyway, time goes on, we still need reinforcements and the closer it gets to deadline day the harder it’s going to be. Good luck Mr Charnley.

      (Quote)

  45. 10.5 million for a left back is a big investment.

Now all we need is the 30 million striker
