Transfer window gathers pace

Closing in on Remy...Again!
Closing in on Remy…Again!
Having already welcomed Henri Saivet and Jon Jo Shelvey to the club this January, there are rumours that the business is not done yet – with Andros Townsend apparently on his way in a £12m deal. What else can we expect before the window slams shut?

Well it has tonight been confirmed that 24-year-old Shane Ferguson has been released and signed a n 18-month deal with Millwall, where be has featured over 25 times this season, scoring twice. A hard working player with a very good cross on him, his stamina is what seemed to let him down at the top level, which is a shame. On the bright side, our squad is carrying a lot of players that offer little to the squad – either in terms of ability, consistency or being injury prone – so it’s good to see spaces beginning to be freed up in order to allow players to come in that can offer Newcastle United genuine depth of quality and tactical flexibility.

Marveaux, Gouffran, Obertan, Williamson, Cisse, Heidara, Taylor and a few others fit that catagory – and most of them can be expected to be moved on either in the remainder of this window or during the summer. What we can expect during the next week is for the tough tackling, talented but not often available Cheick Tiote to complete his £5m move to China, whilst French Flop Florian Thauvin should go back to Marseille on loan – hopefully with a compulsory buy back clause…

Fans are split on whether Townsend is value for the quoted £12m fee being paid for him by virtue of his lack of recent first team football and tendency to cut in and shoot at goal – usually missing the target. That said, he is a natural left footed winger with searing pace and something to prove – who has Premier League experience, so he should definitely add quality and threat to our play, especially if deployed from the left wing in his stronger foot as opposed to the right like he was at Spurs. See an example of what he could bring below;

To round off this window and give ourselves a solid chance of survival, we need to sign a striker. With Pato said to have finalised his Chelsea move and Adebayor now a Crystal Palace player, our chances of re-signing Loic Remy have increased. He is proven in the Premiership and proven whilstcwearing our colours. He is keen to secure a move this January because he knows he won’t make the France squad for the Euro’s if he’s not playing regularly. Fingers crossed for this one because signing Remy is a no-brainer if we want a goalscorer capable of making an immediate impact. Here’s a reminder of what he could bring us;

There has been talk of Lacazette , which as impressive as it would be – would still be a gamble as he has not played inbtbis league before. Meanwhile, the £25m being quoted for Berahino is far too steep. Whilst Mitrovic has stuttered somewhat in front of goal this season, Berahino’s general stats this season are no better than Mitro’s. With a heavy price tag and questionable attitude, I’m not sure he is the right man for us. But you never know…

  1. the priority is a goal scorer not a bargain basement left back!!

sort your **** out penfold ffs

  2. I’d say a defender is important too myself. Considering what the board has done so far this window, I won’t judge their efforts until the deadline passes, as they have done ok so far and seem to be buying based on what the manager says we need instead of the old model.

he’ll probably end up with a – pay as you play – contract.

which will mean he will have to rely on family credit to put food on the table.

  4. no good just getting numbers through the door for the sake of it.

if a position needs filling then fill it – but i doubt doing it on the cheap will solve the problem.

      (Quote)

  5. Roy a pay as you pay contract sounds like a very good idea. He’ll only get paid for 2 games a season but that’s still 40k a year.

      (Quote)

  6. I don’t know what wages after tax he’ll receive but it’s still more than most hard working people i guess.

  7. As for a striker Roy I haven’t got a clue. One most player’s see us as a last resort. If it’s a choice for Remy between Leicester and Newcastle then we got no hope.

  8. well the haggling should take us right up to the close of the window…

too close to call whether or not we get him over the line.

After the failure to agree with Fenerbahçe, now comes a new opportunity for the future of Seydou Doumbia. In the last hours, in fact, there was the ‘inclusion of the important Newcastle. A destination particularly appreciated by the player with the English club which has already made a first offer for the striker class ’87. Speech well underway, parties at work. And Doumbia can fly to England …

  11. Sham, One of the worst decisions ever letting him go mate, fair few of us on here were not happy about it at all myself included. Truth be told don’t think he wanted away either going off his mrs Tweets that day 😆

      (Quote)

  12. Seydou Doumbia has 5 goals in 13 games this season for cska Moscow where he’s on loan from Roma, he was previously with cska Moscow from 2011-2015 where he made 95 apps and scored 61 times. Oh well he’s used to the cold at least 😉

      (Quote)

  13. Doumbia’s stats are very impressive. Striker that can play on either flank. Contributes more than a goal every 2 games, but has had a few niggles over the years. Nothing major mind.

I’d be happy enough with him.

The left back is obviously a stop gap until the summer, which is fine as we need cover. Glad to see the board making footballing decisions for a change.

  14. the guy siqueira we’re close to loaning has only made 26 apps since 2014 for Ath Madrid ! Took this from Wiki

On 6 June 2014, Atlético Madrid and Granada reached an agreement for the transfer of Siqueira for a reported €10 million fee, pending a medical examination.[25][26] He signed a four-year contract after passing his medical, on 11 June 2014.[27] Upon joining the club, Siqueira said that “it did not take a second to decide” to join Atlético.[28]

Siqueira made his debut in a friendly match against Numancia, on 23 July 2014, which Atlético won 1-0.[29] He made his competitive debut in the first leg of the 2014 Supercopa de España on 19 August, a 1–1 draw away to Real Madrid, in which he played 64 minutes before being replaced by fellow debutant, Cristian Ansaldi.[30]

      (Quote)

  15. Didnt he play against us for Benfica?

very good for Grenada, He signed for Real Madrid but the deal was cancelled after Contrao to man Utd fell through. Joined athletico for decent money but he’s struggled for games this season with Luiz re-signing for them.

He’s attacking and certainly should stop us looking lop sided with him & Townsend on the left

      (Quote)

  16. These sound like backup plans to me. They can’t get their main targets as usual. Doumbia might or might not work out and who knows about the LB? Doumbia can’t hurt though. I can remember people posting about him for years.

      (Quote)

  17. End of the day there is no guarantee Berahino would work out for us either. His stats this season are worse than Mitro’s for example. A player on loan in order to get a look at him first is not a bad thing. Maybe the talk is just calling West Broms bluff but I’d be content with either of them.

      (Quote)

  18. Looks to me like West Brom don’t want to help us out of the relegation zone by shipping Berahino over to us. Not for what we would pay at any rate. I’m not convinced by him. A very poor attitude. Is he robust enough to stay fit in the Prem? Lots of questions for me. We take far too long to get players in though. I think a lot of that comes down to Charnley. Not good enough, like his boss.

      (Quote)

  19. All the silly talk of getting Vidic and now he retires. He was done at Prem level when he left ManU. We have to stay sensible about this (hilarious coming from me I know). Running around recommending players like him doesn’t help and gets the younger posters excited for nothing.

      (Quote)

  20. I’m not sure I believe Doumbia would want to come to us. It doesn’t really make sense. And he’s 28 now. Hmmm. I think we’re getting desperate. This smells like another empty rumour to me.

      (Quote)

  21. Well if we are signing a Brazilian LB he better be able to Bend it like Roberto Carlos or I’ll be very disappointed!

      (Quote)

  22. We stumble around in the transfer market looking for “deals”. Most of the time they are flops. I think Shelvey will be decent as he was for most of his time with Swansea. The jury is out on Townsend. Sissoko will probably leave in summer. Still we aren’t building anything solid at all. This is so predictable from a worm like Ashley.

      (Quote)

  23. If we get a LB in and this Roma striker then I’d call that a good window. It’s very difficult to obtain the best players in January and we have even got rid of Willo. Shelvey and Townsend are great signings. With Leicester wanting g Remy we can’t blame Charnley for not getting him in, whilst West Brim want silly money for a Berahino that has been poor this season and has a questionable attitude – so we can’t expect much more really. Sounds like they tried hard for Lacazette too bit he did not fancy it, so what are they to do?

      (Quote)

  24. So Remy to Leicester. We end up with… Some Ivory Coast striker who can’t score outside Russia…

      (Quote)

  25. Report they are buying Remy not a loan, how many times has Remy done the dirty on us,shows he’s all about money but most players are that way now

      (Quote)

  26. Ice maybe it’s not Remy that is doing the dirt on us, it could be due to the fact that chelski want to sell him rather than loan him to us.

      (Quote)

  27. Well at least those that we are now after are only loans so its a win win situation. If they are good enough we keep them If not its byebye without losing big money on them . Unlike we have with a boat load of frenchies these last few seasons of even a couple of dutchies come to think of it .

  28. Ive played in the heat Italy/Aussie,much prefer the cold, then as Stuart suggest the grog was nice lol

      (Quote)

  29. It seems pretty apparent to me that their main targets arent going to be available until the summer. It appears they have tried to loan Remy but Chelsea want rid – I can understand that and if Remy isn’t in our long term plans then it makes sense to move on.
The other option would be to do nothing and hope what we have sees us through, but they are trying to get the necassary cover in on loan.
    At least they are trying.

      (Quote)

  30. Talk is they have payed 11mil for Remy,if true they can have him without a loan to see if he’s still up to it

  31. Some of you guys just love to complain…

Some of you slate the club for always going after bargains…some of you slate the club for overpaying for the likes of Shelvey and Townsend…some of you whinge when we don’t send players out on loan…some of you whinge when we don’t recall players doing well…etc.

G2 @340 – how can you possibly say that based on our recent signings? Neither Shelvey or Townsend strike me as “deals”. Gini, Mitrovic and Thauvin were signed for big money too, as was Mbemba come to think of it. Gini has been brilliant, I think Mbemba has grown into the role very well and I think Mitrovic will be a very good striker when he gets the confidence to put the ball in the net more.

Barring the 2 French wingers, we haven’t had that many transfer flops. It’s just a bloody competitive league.

      (Quote)

  32. Problem is Sharpy it looks like they’re looking at a striker who has a less than impressive scoring rate in any half decent league. It’s a big risk in my opinion. If we get to the summer and we want Berahino our chances of getting him are less as Spurs will most likely be prepared to pay what he will be going for then.

      (Quote)

  33. WBA say they are quite happy to let his contract run down (18) months as they would still get a good sum of money through tribunal, doesn’t help the kid like

  36. True Roy. True!

Absolutely fans have the right to be pissed off about our league position. No question about it! But I don’t blame that on the transfer business in the last couple of windows. We have failed to capitalise on good positions by not keeping/replacing key players, we hounded out a perfectly good PL manager and we’ve had poor performances from the two managers since.

What we’re doing in the transfer market now is great, but we need to be established as a top 10 PL team so we can attract better players and a better manager to give us a shout of a European place.

Frankly it’s pretty tough to sign top players for the PL when we’re in the NE of England and sitting in the relegation zone…

      (Quote)

  37. Remy wil get plenty. Leicester play with advanced wingers like inside forwards and Remy can do a job there too.

      (Quote)

  38. Getting Remy on loan…where would he play? Mitrovic is doing a good job holding up the ball up front. Do we replace him? He needs the experience and confidence. I’d like to see Gini in the number 10 role too. Sissoko and Townsend on the wings too surely? One of those would have to be benched to play him. Can’t see them benching Shelvey and playing Gini/Sissoko in the centre and we need a more defensively minded CM with either Saivet, Tiote or Colback.

    Oh…and there’s Perez too.

I’d much MUCH rather sign Berahino. Very different player to Mitrovic and would give us loads of options in midfield and attack. Resting one or two of those players occasionally would be useful and we could rotate based on the opposition. Remy will want guarantees to play regularly as he needs lots of goals to stand a chance of getting into the France squad for the summer. Can’t see him moving otherwise.

  39. SHAMROCK

I’m with you. I actually think he’s more likely to get game time at Leicester than us. Vardy and Mahrez will expect to play every game but there are other positions he could play in. Either up front with Vardy sometimes or out wide.

    Hmmm 😯
Is Remy better than Mitro at this stage in their careers?
Then if so, Remy gets the nod. Simples.
We are in this position because Mitro is not scoring.

      (Quote)

  41. TROY

I reckon Remy would score more goals, but Mitrovic would hold the ball up better.

But crucially for me, Mitrovic is OUR player. I would prefer to play and develop him as a potentially big player for us for years to come. Remy would be a short-term measure unless we actually buy him and see him playing for us for a few years. Can’t see that happening though…I bet he’ll either get a move to a CL club in another league or a big money deal in Qatar or China. In the summer obviously…after the Euros…

      (Quote)

  42. Surprised you think we get a goal for holding the ball up. Mitrovic isn’t ready yet and he needs to learn off better players – but unfortunately we don’t have any. It’s about the short term now and for me that would mean Remy over Mitro and let Mitro learn off Remy.

All irrelevant though as he’s off to Leicester obviously.

Signing this Ivory Coast player just doesn’t give me confidence as its goals we need and he’s not scored in a decent league

      (Quote)

  43. We have coaches to teach Mitrovic. We don’t sign a player like Remy to teach Mitrovic. Makes no sense.

Heskey didn’t score many goals but was a wonderful foil for players like Owen in his career. Maybe Gini moving into the middle could do similar. Or maybe Perez? Maybe Armstrong next season?

I’m just not a great fan of loans unless we really need to plug a hole (i.e. left back) or we’re getting a player on loan to see if he’s cut out for this league, before we sign him. I don’t like loan players blocking one of our players from playing. I think Schteve needs to find a way to score enough goals with Shelvey being the deep lying playmaker and the likes of Gini, Mitrovic, Sissoko, Townsend and Perez popping up with goals.

      (Quote)

We are on the brink of relegation. No time for messing round and waiting for players to develop.
Remy is a proven goalscorer in the EDL.
    Mitro is far from it.

  45. i tend to agree with slavvery jack @ 364

i’ll go one further – mitro is not scoring because he’s an expensive cart horse.

  46. talk about leaving it to the last minute. 😳
The reality of the situation has set in at last and now the ‘board’ are well and truly in panic mode.
Cant or wont pay for the experienced striker we need, so now revisiting the bucket of rejects from previous seasons.
Clearly Mitro cant cut it yet, so anybody will do.
    Desperate or what. ❓

      (Quote)

  47. tbh it is refreshing to have an owner that wont sell to a rival, at any price.
I know for certain fat waster would take the money and to hell with the consequences.
Unfortunately I feel there is more pain still to come this season.

      (Quote)

  48. Townsend made that comment about playing either wing or centre forward in his interview – maybe we’re looking at switching some attacking midfielders to strikers?

Obertan should have had this treatment years ago. His pace rips everyone else we’ve got and we used him as a late striker sub but never committed.

We need to shift De Jong on now though, what place does he have with Shelvey, Saivet, Townsend and now possibly Doumbia coming in on top of the competition already here in Perez, Mitro, Cisse, Colback, Tiote (still), etc.

      (Quote)

  49. I see the link with Santon now. What a farce his career has become.

Breakthrough at Inter, move to Newcastle, loan back to Inter, permanent move back to Inter, possible loan back to Newcastle.

I assume we’ll follow logic and permanently sign him next summer to loan then sell him back to Inter in 18 months.

      (Quote)

  50. This along with the Debuchy link and Remy tells me that Graham Carr, the useless *****, only has about 10 names in his epic scouting list and we’ll spam the same names infinitely like Chelsea with their 7 manager list they run through repeatedly.
