DeAndre Yedlin Finds Himself In An Interesting Situation Here

Newcastle’s 4-0 win over Rotherham United at the weekend highlighted a lot of things. It highlighted the importance of Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey, it highlighted that Daryl Murphy is very good cover for Dwight Gayle, and it also highlighted that DeAndre Yedlin is a player that is improving at a rapid rate.

The interesting situation that was referenced in the title is that, although he is a defender, he is highly exciting.

This is an unusual trait for a defender. He is quick, energetic and has a clear passion for the game.

However, what is most significant is the improvements that he is making to the defensive side of his game.

Yedlin is only young, and while he may have been playing against the worst team in the division this weekend, he showed that he has the potential to improve his positioning and tacking, which are possibly the weakest aspects of his game.

Vurnon Anita may well be a better option currently, but it is good to know that Yedlin can provide adequate cover, and someday, perhaps displace his Dutch counterpart.

  1. Highly unlikely Townsend will be returning to #nufc this month. Looking elsewhere. Might be rekindled in the summer I suppose

    — Luke Edwards (@LukeEdwardsTele) January 23, 2017

wow, how to post something without really committing to anything… 😳 😳

    The key words…..
“Highly unlikely” = It might not happen but it still could.
“Might be” = I don’t really know anything for sure.
“I suppose” = I am just guessing and really know **** all about what is actually transpiring behind the scenes.

That statement is highly likely to be bullshit, it might be, I suppose!

  2. I’m always having late nights Aussie. Just winding down now but can often be found working until any time between 3am and 7am. Not good for the body but managing to get out for cross country 10k runs every 5 or 6 days days, so at least the heart is getting a bit of a helping hand.
This week I’m doing 2 shifts starting at 7am then on Friday 5pm u till 3am at the earliest. Body never knows if it’s coming or going!

  3. Hope all is well with you and yours anyhow. Don’t see you around that often these days, which is a shame. Same for other old faces such as Bris and Prem. Would be nice to get more variety back here, old and new alike.

  4. Thanks for the word Sham. I do pop on for a read more often than not. Like I said to Sharpy the other day. I feel like I have said my piece on a lot of the Newcastle subject matter. So I only post every now and again.
I did a bit of shift work back in the day and I am feeling for you.. It can be tough on the body and mind.. 😐

  5. Yes indeed. Well I hope to see a bit more of you and a few of the others anyway. Even Troy brings setting different to the table, so would be good to see him too from time to time. Right I’m off. Fingers crossed for some decent transfer progress in the next few days!

Good going Sham. I was running 5k 3 times a week but just got bore with it. I’m a shift worker too tho so know exactly what you mean.
I’ve got back into my golf now but not out 5-6 times a week sadly ?

Wondering what sort of shifts Aussies putting in? Always been shifty to me.

Ice, exactly my thoughts, the guy is hardly on fire like, and if Swans aren’t fussed at him going out on loan when you would think they need him, well he can’t be better than we have.
Maybe Rafa rates the lad and sees something we don’t but this looks like a carr special to appease the Fatman to me. 🙁

I do give it more credibility with Sky putting it up though coz they’ve never covered any other such rumour.
Barrow must be 4-5th down the list if he’s on it.

Can’t be anything more than a loan at best and that would be just to have the numbers – quantity over quality.

  26. Not convinced on Barrow but if Rafa is happy with it and it’s a loan deal I don’t see why not to be honest. I’ve never heard of him. Interior was immense. Id take him but still prefer Andros.

On another issue, it would be really great to get a link on the bottom of previous thread when something new goes up. ?

  27. If it is a loan for Barrow I am not too bothered, although I would have preferred that we could make a deal for Townsend. It is obvious that Rafa wants cover/competition for Gouffy who seems to have gone off the boil a bit.

I still think there is a chance with Townsend as his playing time will be even more limited with the purchase of Schlupp who is obviously seen as a winger by Fat Sam because they are also after Van Anholt. Townsend will be there in the summer and his stock could have fallen if he doesn’t play much, which I suspect he wont.

  28. Could we get a loan for McCarthy as Everton have bought his replacement? Who else is interested?

      (Quote)

  29. I am trying to figure out who Rafa will play in the cup and am struggling. Sammy and Sterry are cup-tied and we have a midweek league game against QPR. Will Rafa make an away tie against a middling League One side a priority? We can probably win with a weakened side but not too weak and with our injuries and ACON our options are limited.

  30. I said on the last thread that the bookies have us between 20/1 ON and 50/1 ON to get promoted. Those odds are not even worth a bet so they seem to be sure that we will do it even as some of our fans are not sure.

And I also quoted the odds that Mackems are 6/1 ON for relegation.

  32. How does going for Barrow make sense? His stats are terrible. Why waste time on this? I smell Ashley more and more here. Don’t waste Rafa’s time and patience Ashley.

  33. How much time have we wasted fannying about trying to get Palace to loan us Townsend? This is still a very good player who they can get cash for. Why would they agree to a loan? Just nonsense from Ashley and Charnley as usual.

      (Quote)

  34. G2: because no other clubs have shown a real interest in Townsend. His form over the last 3 or more years has been spotty at best with the few games he played for us being in stark contrast to his time at Spurs and now Palace. We saw a completely different player, but other teams probably still see him as a big risk. Some may even think he has a bad attitude as Pochettino made an example out of him.

On the money front, I have said this before: If it is true that Palace owe us 3 million next month then that is like them receiving 3 million. It is Ashley’s way to pay up front so they would get the balance of any transfer fee in the summer. We could even have a promotion clause and I think Palace would be happy as we are almost certain to go up. If any other team paid for Townsend in installments then Palace would probably only bank about 3 million anyway and would have to wait for the rest over the next few years.

We might be haggling over the fee and wanting him back for less than we got. There are also the wages to consider, both in how much Palace would save over a long term contract for a bit part player and how much we are willing to pay him now. Its complicated 🙂

      (Quote)

  35. Also, I think Townsend was loaned out to 8 clubs before coming to us. Even though he was an England international Spurs never showed that much faith in him and Poch was quick to discard him.

In the scheme of things we probably overpaid because it was January and Spurs always overvalue their players. It was surprising that he played so well for us as he had only done so for short periods in his career before that.

      (Quote)

  36. If by some miracle Haris Vuckic came back to us and had a good half season he would be to NUFC as Townsend was to Spurs.

G2 – because CP are paying for Townsend in instalments. They are due to pay another £3m next month – which suggests they are probably paying in quarterly instalments so will have only paid £6-7m so far.
Rather than paying £3m next month and then another £3m before the end of a season – for a player they don’t want and will be bit part during that time, they can save themselves £6m on fees.
Equally, rather than profiting £3m on a player we really need, we are negotiating that amount as a loan fee for Townsend.

It actually makes perfect sense to me.

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy: there is no way we would pay a loan fee of 3 mil for 4 months. Most of that would come off the final fee in my opinion. I think that is probably the sticking point, along with perhaps Townsend’s wages depending on if Palace gave him a raise.

I have no inside knowledge, I am just looking at the logistics of the situation.

  39. I know Montero had a tremendous game against us and drove Janmaat mad but I’m not that keen. Looks to be injury prone, mainly hamstring. Has only 1 assist in 11 league appearances this season. Not great. He turns 28 in September. Not nearly the player Townsend is.

      (Quote)

  40. Palace save money yes Sharpy mate. But I worry another club will just offer an outright fee for him. He is one of the better players we’ve had over quite a few years. And they don’t seem all that thrilled with the loan idea or he would be with us now.

      (Quote)

  41. I go by how Townsend played for us Eric mate. Not how Pardew got him and Pardewed him. Spurs never valued him either or they wouldn’t have loaned him out so often. He may not have fit their style of play either. But to me he was a driving force with us. One of very few influential players in our relegation year.

      (Quote)

  42. G2 – I’m with you on Montero mate. He’s only scored once in 60 odd games for Swansea too. Other than being rapid, I don’t see he’s got much else going for him – low on assists & goals. Also, if he were that good, there’s no way Swansea would even consider letting him go in the position they are in.
Barrow looks the same to me, rapid down the right wing with little end product.

The only winger I would consider from Swansea would be Nathan Dyer personally.

      (Quote)

  43. I am with you both on Montero and Barrow. There are a lot of players who flatter to deceive. When you are talking about wingers they are pretty easy to evaluate in my opinion. You have to look at assists first and then goals. These two players have very little end product and in the end that is what matters.

Just look at Sissoko. He looked good and frightened defenses but he always chose the wrong final ball or scuffed his shot. Consequently, he had like 1 assist and 1 goal last year. We all knew how it would turn out for Spurs and so far that’s the way it is going. Buying wingers who do not provide assists is not the way to go.

      (Quote)

  44. G2: I also agree that it is hard to judge Andros by his time at Palace because he played under my favourite Manager.

G2 – CP don’t seem keen on the loan coz they want to sell him so Sam has more money. It’s a bit of a cat n mouse game at the moment. If another cat comes along, then maybe we up our efforts.
Personally I think Townsend desperately wants to come back to us. If we are interested, he will favour the move to us whether that be loan with permanent switch in the summer, or a permanent switch to a different club now.

      (Quote)

  46. I’ll not be too fussed if we dont get Townsend.
He was great for us over 12games or so BUT he still has lots to prove. 13mil is quite a bit for someone who spent most of his career in the Championship after being loaned out for the majority of it.
Flopped at Spurs after being sussed and has flopped at Palace.

Maybe its a matter of time before he’s sussed at the toon?

Plus, he made the mistake of turning his back on us, so if hes stuck at Palace or somewhere else shitty, hard luck 😛

  47. So who are the players we should be going after Sharpy and Gashley? Or should we just keep our powder dry until summer? I don’t mind that but we had better spend in the summer. The loss to Hull in the league cup still bothers me. It suggests we would have a huge struggle to stay up with the current squad.

      (Quote)

  48. There’s an argument to say we should keep our powder dry this transfer window so we have more to spend next season but that’s on the assumption our squad is good enough to maintain the seasons form. Personally I think it is but then again if we could get players now who would be good enough for the PL I wouldn’t say no.

Although if nobody came in I’d be disappointed but still confident of getting promoted.

G2 – hahaha the £30m question mate. Who we should be going after and who we could realistically get in are 2 very different things – and I’m probably one of the few that would see Ashley as the reason for that.

I think the real building & recruitment will happen in the summer – I always did. So the nonsense of Ashley getting involved didn’t really bother me coz I don’t think Rafa really planned to spend big this month anyway. I think he got his players in in the summer that he was ready to see the promotion season though with.
But if he can get Townsend back – who i think he would have kept if not for the clause, then I reckon he’d be my only addition.
I’d have liked a midfielder too, but Chelsea won’t let Lotus-Cheek go and Everton won’t let McCarthy go – so unless something else comes up in the next 6-7 days, then we go with what we have I guess.
