Club reporter Luke Edwards believes Lee Charnley may have been left ‘paralysed’ when it comes to making a decision on Rafa Benitez’s future, suggesting he may still be waiting for the green light from Mike Ashley.
As the Telegraph’s north-east writer reveals, Mike Ashley has been away on an Easter break and, despite his wish to keep Benitez at the club, this break (combined with his big financial losses at Debbenham’s) may have distracted him from giving Charnley the all clear to get this deal done.
Here’s what Edwards has had to say when speaking to the Chronicle:
This could well be right, but it would sum up Ashley’s total neglect of Newcastle United, highlighting how his ignorance continues to slow down any decision making process at the club.
He’ll claim he’s not involved and instead allows Lee Charnley to deal with footballing matters, but it often feels like he leaves the club’s managing director with his hands tied – and this is what Luke is suggesting here.
As he states in the clip above, Edwards is still backing Benitez to stay, but the Spaniard is bound to be frustrated by the time it’s taking to sort out such a vital decision.
