According to reports in Ghana, Christian Atsu has been told he can leave Newcastle this summer and Scottish giants Celtic are now looking to sign him.
Ghana Soccernet – the country’s leading outlet – states that we are now ‘listening to offers’ for the 28-year-old, and say Celtic have emerged as potential buyers after attempting to sign the winger back in January.
With Jacob Murphy’s resurgence over pre-season forcing Atsu further down the pecking order, now could be the time to cash in – and our only chance to get a decent fee given his current deal expires next summer.
Here’s a snippet from Ghana Soccernet’s exclusive:
Scottish champions Celtic FC are interested in signing Ghana international Christian Atsu this summer, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.
Celtic have inquired into the availability of the Newcastle United winger and ready to sign him before the transfer window shuts.
This is the second time the Hoops have been linked with the Black Stars winger as a deal was mooted last January.
The Magpies are ready to listen to offers for the 28-year-old who seem not to be part of Steve Bruce’s plans for the 2020/2021 campaign.
The former Chelsea man has been a decent servant for the club – making 118 appearances. He played a crucial role in the promotion season of 16/17 and was then part of the team that finished 10th in the Premier League the following year.
Since then, his game time has only dwindled, with him appearing 18 times last season and Steve Bruce barely using him since football return from lockdown.
He’s in need of game time and could shine in the SPL, while we could benefit from the cash based on our small summer budget.
A deal that may well suit all parties, especially when he’ll be leaving for nothing next summer if we don’t sell him soon.
