Saudi PIF in talks to host history-making boxing fight at St James’ Park this summer – The Times

Away from football but staying on Tyneside, Newcastle United could be set to host one of the biggest female boxing events in history this summer.

According to The Times, local lass Savannah Marshall looks set to fight America’s Claressa Shields in a world championship unification fight at St James’ Park should the North-East star get through her upcoming fight on Saturday night.

Martin Hardy’s big ‘exclusive’ reveals that Newcastle’s new owners are in talks with Marshall about hosting her potential world championship unification bout at St James’ Park.

The fight would be expected to take place in July this summer, with a capacity of 25,000 discussed for the potential mega bout.

Interestingly, The Times also report that the Saudi PIF are ‘eager’ to stage the right – which would be the biggest in women’s boxing history – after also agreeing to host a few Rugby League World Cup games in October.

So, watch this space, as a win for Marshall on Saturday night could now mean an eagerly awaited showdown between her and Claressa Shields happen in our own back yard!
