Burnley 1-2 Newcastle: Wilson breaks hearts at Turf Moor as Toon finish 11th

Two goals from Callum Wilson and some heroic late defending was enough to see us end the season with a win at Burnley on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign.

The result sees us finish on our highest points tally (49) for eight years and in 11th place, while Burnley have suffered relegation to the Championship after Leeds’ 2-1 win at Brentford made certain of their survival.

It was a fitting end to a rollercoaster of a season that’s seen us go from Bruce, Ashley and favourites to go down, to Howe, ambitious new owners and a much improved side who are finally playing to their potential.

A shame we couldn’t secure that top 10 finish we deserved, however this has been a turnaround unlike anything we’ve ever seen before in Premier League history. Not only did we defy the odds by staying up – no side has ever done this when failing to win any of their opening 14 games – we would’ve ended the season 10th had Brighton not come from behind to beat West Ham.

It was also great to see Wilson back and doing what he does best – bullying centre-backs, making great runs and scoring goals – with Allan Saint-Maximin also causing problems throughout and coming away unlucky not to have bagged a hat-trick of assists.

Here’s all of today’s results – seeing Man City come back from 2-0 down to lift the title at Liverpool’s expense – and the final Premier League table, followed by our match report in full from a frantic day at Turf Moor:

  • Burnley 1-2 Newcastle
  • Brentford 1-2 Leeds
  • Man City 3-2 Aston Villa
  • Liverpool 3-1 Wolves
  • Arsenal 5-1 Everton
  • Norwich 0-5 Tottenham
  • Crystal Palace 1-0 Man Utd
  • Leicester 4-1 Southampton
  • Chelsea 2-1 Watford
  • Brighton 3-1 West Ham

Eddie Howe made TWO changes from the side that won so impressively earlier this week, seeing Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles come in for Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar.

Sadly, he was forced to make another less than 10 minutes into the game, as Joelinton was stretchered off with what looked like a potentially serious ankle injury. He looked in real discomfort and had his name chanted by the travelling Toon Army.

Jacob Murphy came on in his place and it looked like we switched from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 with that, seeing Miguel Almiron move into a number 10 role and Murphy go out to the right.

Our first effort of the game came from Guimaraes after some good play from Wilson. The Brazilian had his edge of the box shot saved by Pope and it was cleared for a corner. Trippier’s back post delivery was parried by Pope and touched on by Collins’ outstretched hand.

The referee didn’t see it, but was soon surrounded by black and white shirts and told to have a look at the monitor by VAR. A penalty was given and Wilson made no mistake, sending Pope the wrong way to bag his first goal since returning from a long-term injury. 1-0 Newcastle and Burnley were going down as things stood, with Leeds drawing 0-0 at Brentford midway through the first half.

As you’d expect, the hosts tried to get back at us in a bid to get back into a game they simply couldn’t afford to lose. They enjoyed a small period of pressure leading up to the half hour mark, but we defended well, with Lascelles in particular making a solid start to the game.

After that, we took control of the game and weren’t giving Burnley much of the ball. Our pace on the break was threatening to cause problems and our midfield three looked to have more quality in possession in what had generally been a scrappy start to a tense affair at Turf Moor.

Aside from two long distance strikes from Dwight McNeil, we’d restricted Burnley to very little and had a huge chance to make it 2-0 in first half stoppage time when Targett’s ball down the left released Saint-Maximin on the counter.

The Frenchman had too much pace for Brownhill, burst into the box and had a low effort across goal well saved by Pope. ASM could and should have done better, but it was a good break and more proof that our pacey front four were too quick for this Burnley back line.

Half-time came and we were 1-0 up and into the top 10 as things stood, with Brighton losing 0-1 to West Ham and Brentford currently level with Leeds!

Burnley brought on Wout Weghorst at the break – the giant Dutchman who replaced Chris Wood in January – but it was us who had the first near miss, as a lovely cross from Jacob Murphy just evaded black and white shirts in the box.

Bad news then arrived from Brighton, who moved back into the top 10 at our expense when a second half strike from Joel Veltman made it 1-1 in their clast with West Ham at The Amex.

Soon after a Saint-Maximin led counter almost led to another goal for Wilson, Turf Moor then went silent as news filtered in that Leeds had just taken the lead at Brentford, meaning Burnley may now need TWO second half goals to stay up.

Then, after Almiron blazed over after more good work from Saint-Maximin, the Frenchman did brilliantly to lay it on a plate for Wilson, who latched onto his ball across the box and guided the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0!

Burnley were going down and we were a West Ham goal away from a top 10 finish, although both those things were thrown into doubt when Maxwell Cornet made it 2-1, scoring at the second attempt after his first effort was parried by Dubravka.

Chris Wood came on against his former club and Saint-Maximin made way, presumably to give us more presence up top and some extra cover out wide, as Almiron moved out to the left and we switched to a 4-4-2.

The Clarets were building momentum and pushing for an equaliser, with it taking goal line clearances from Lascelles and Targett to keep us ahead! Brentford had equalised against Leeds, so Burnley knew an equaliser would be enough to keep them up should the score line remain the same in West London.

Brighton went 2-1 up against West Ham, meaning 11th looked like our best possible finish should we hang on at Turf Moor – and we really were hanging on at times!

We had a few big chances on the counter, however Bruno lost his footing at the crucial time and, on another occasion moments later, Almiron’s control let him down just when we looked to have a man over.

Miggy then made way for Matt Ritchie – who came on for what will almost certainly be his last appearance in black and white – as we looked to run down the clock. Four minutes of added time were signalled and Burnley almost equalised through Cornet, but that missed chance was followed by a Leeds winner at Brentford.

The full-time whistle went and Burnley were down, Leeds were staying up and Man City were champions, with their stunning comeback from 2-0 down against Aston Villa enough to see them lift the title after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Wolves.

Back to Newcastle, it wasn’t a top 10 finish but ending the season in 11th place was an incredible effort. From winless after 14 games to the best points total we’ve managed in eight years is some achievement.

We’ve been through the mill at times over the past year, but it’s all been worth it in the end. This is a team to be proud of and one that’s only going to get better with ambitious new owners and an ever-improving manager on our side.

Next up, a huge summer off the pitch and a well deserved break for the squad – although we’d like to bet that workaholic Eddie Howe barely gives himself a minute’s rest!

  5. They have inflicted the buffoon Micah Richards on me in the US for the CL games. How does he have a job? he just guffaws like a madman while anybody else is talking.

  6. I listen to a few of the BBC podcasts. Micah Ricards is on a few of them and they usually do 3 mins of “banter” before they get into the details. Anyway, if ever they introduce Micah as being on the panel I just turn it off because I know it will just be Richards being an insane hyena on nitrous oxide.

  7. I never thought there would be a worse pundit than Robbie Savage but Micah has taken that crown.

And Journos! I listened to The Guardian podcast today and Mackem fan and NUFC hater was a disgrace. He works for an English paper and his job is to follow the PL. The presenter asked him his opinion on Southgate’s England squad and he said he had no interest in it and wouldnt make a comment. That’s your fcn job mate! That’s what you are employed to do – to follow English football and to comment on it. I dont care that he is Irish, he should be sacked for this stupidity.

  8. I think Liverpool may regret the missed opportunities… Madrid can turn it around in an instant

  9. Tough call that one – hate Madrid for being the driving force for that ‘super league’ (though loved them as a youngster).
But probably hate Lpool more for them trying desperately to put the block on our takeover – actually there’s no probably about it. I dislike Lpool and Man Utd more than any other club.

    [email protected] um!!!!

  10. Desperately want us to get Ashworth sorted if that’s what they want before starting to buy players.

Get him in NOW and get cracking!!.

What I don’t want is for us to be messing round for weeks sorting Ashworth out when we need players in.

If a deal can be done, get it done. If Brighton want what we aren’t prepared to pay, leave it and get the players in.

  11. PremAndUp:
And Klopp manager of the year for what two cups?

All that said, I do think he deserves that. CL final again – clawing back a 12 points gap on City to take it not just to the last day of the season but about the last 20 minutes of the last day of the season.

Of the shortlist – don’t get why Viera was on it 🤷🏼‍♂️. Pep only won one trophy by your argument. As brilliantly as Howe did, he didn’t manage the full season so as much as it pains me to say, shouldn’t have been eligible.
My vote would have gone the Brentford – Franks has done amazing this season imo.

  12. Klopps trophies were not technically PL trophies. The fact Eddie only had half a season to turn around Bruce’s mess makes it all the more remarkable. They should have a re-vote.

  13. This “NEW MANAGER BOUNCE” is a bit of a myth now. We saw massive managerial changes and there was only Conte and maybe Gerrard who had decent 1st 6 or so games. It even took Eddie a while.

What about Rangnick, Super-Frank, Ranieri, Mr Roy, Dean Smith, Jackson, Marsch?

  14. Apart from Conte and Eddie I think all of the clubs finished at or below where they were when the new manager came in, inc Gerrard. How is that a bounce? I know there is some vague reference to it being the 1st few games but that never happened in most cases, even Conte.

  15. I know we all go crazy for early signings but all of the players and managers are off on their hols for at least 3 weeks. As boring as the CL final!

  16. NUFC fans are so fickle. What is this rush to get ASM out the door? Under Bruce he was our best player while having to deal with the appalling 9-0-1 setup. He was tasked with taking on the whole team by himself.

Now Eddie wants him to play a bit differently but he has only had about 10 games due to injury. There are signs. He is passing more and in the last few games I have seen that he is actually quite a good passer. We need to see what he can do when he has more time on the ball and doesnt have 3 opposition players on him.

One of the knocks on him is that he doesnt do well against the big teams. He might do better with better players around him, but, in the meantime, I will take him against Brentford, Palace or Everton as they cant handle him.

A good coach should be able to figure out that having 3 on Maxi creates space for others and should be able to take advantage of that space. And Eddie is a good coach.

A lot of NUFC fans always seem to need something to moan about even when the sky is blue. That includes Malcolm McDonald who had a massive moan at Maxi on FRiday in his Chronicle column.

  17. Seen a couple of articles now saying we won’t go for Paqueta because other positions take priority – to be fair it may be 1 article just rehashed numerous times – either way, I disagree.

Playing staff wise, we only have 2 priorities that I see – LB and RF.

If we sign Matt Targett then LB is no longer one of those priorities and would leave a right forward as the number 1 priority imo.

However, if you get the sniff of a chance to sign a player of the calibre of Paqueta, then you buy him!!.

  18. Further to that – having players like Bruno, Paqueta and Maxi in your squad then makes it considerably easier to sign other quality players.

If Paqueta could be bought it’s a no brainer for me 🤷🏼‍♂️

  19. Sharpy: we have to sign Paqueta because I bought a Brazil baseball cap to wear down the pub when we play.

  20. looks like Henderson could be joining, wrong pick for me it has to be the Burnley keeper Pope far far better than the m/u player imo

  21. icedog:
looks like Henderson could be joining, wrong pick for me it has to be the Burnley keeper Pope far far better than the m/u player imo

Ice – I think you’re right, but I’m not sure there is a big difference between them – other than the experience Pope has from playing far more regular.
I thought Henderson showed a great deal of naivety staying at Man Utd coz they told him he’d get game time – never in a month of Sundays were they dropping De Gea.
But he’s young enough in his career for it not to matter too much I reckon.

If Darlow leaves as a result then I think our squad is stronger – but, I thought Darlow did well covering Dubravka last season. He just hasn’t seemed to kick on – good luck to him though 👍🏻.

  22. Eric Sykes:
Sharpy: we have to sign Paqueta because I bought a Brazil baseball cap to wear down the pub when we play.

Eric – Mate you may need to learn some Samba moves as well if we sign all these Brazilians we are being linked with!! 😂

We could end up with Lodi, Paqueta, Bruno, big Joe – might have to learn the Brazilian National anthem for the WC 😂

  23. Well, well, well, Colback is back… in the Premier league. It’s been a long time since Forest were in the top flight! Well done Nottingham Forest!

  24. Ice. I would rather we never bought any Manure players, we shouldn’t put any cash their way.

  25. Rudy Galetti
🚨🔥 #Newcastle are preparing an offer to #OL for Lucas #Paquetá. The 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 club would like to buy at least one top player and the 🇧🇷 is among the favorites. ⚪⚫

📌 Personal terms under discussion, at a good stage: rapidly evolving situation.🐓⚽

  26. I don’t believe this ‘we have higher priorities elsewhere’ rubbish.

Our defence only conceded more than one goal on two occasions under Howe.
Needs LB sorting out but Burn Schar and Tripps are solid enough for next season.
    Could still be strengthened though.

It lack of goals that hurt us. Wilson back will help, But AM and RW are our top priorities.
Paqueta and Diaby would certainly make a difference.

  27. I dont mind if we lose Miggy as long as we get an upgrade. We would then have Murphy and Fraser as backup. I had given up on Miggy a couple of weeks ago saying his stats dont lie but then thought maybe he could work as a squad player. If he goes to Fulham, that might work. His energy would help a promoted team.

There is talk of Diaby from Leverkusen. I have never seen him play but hs stats are the opposite of Miggy’s.

  28. I am not saying we are going to get these players, but adding 3 starters takes us above the likes of Wolves, Leicester and the current Man U. Our team could be:

    Tripps Schar Burn Targett

    Bruno Big Joe

    Diame Wilson/Nunez ASM

That;s only 3 players if you assume we keep Targett. Obviously we would need a bit of depth as well. After sales, we are looking at 150-200 mil. I think Prem agrees with me that the owners are bluffing about the budget to go under the radar a bit.

  29. What the “lets go for top 10 and a cup” crowd dont get is that we have the building blocks of a good team. It needs 3 high quality additions and we will be top 6. They dont see the wood for the trees. They see we might get another goalie and forget we have a perfectly good keeper in Dubs and that what we really need is better back-up. There are other examples. They want rid of Maxi but it would cost as much to replace him as we get for the sale. They forget he almost single-handedly won us games under Bruce.

  30. Eric – think that could be it – though I’d switch Nunez with Ekitike.

I’m not saying I favour Ekitike over Nunez, only that I expect it. I think Nunez has raised his profile enough this season for ‘bigger’ clubs – CL clubs move in for him.

I also think we could get Ekitike for around £30m and Nunez would be double that. Eventually that fee won’t be an issue – but with the number of improvements needed throughout the squad, I think money is still a factor just now.

  31. Where I do disagree with you and Sharpy is the idea that Miggy is some sort of wide player. In the US he excelled behind the CF. If we insist on playing 4-3-3 then he is surplus. 4-2-3-1 then he can play in the middle of the three, probably deputy to Paqueta if we get him, although I would like to try anderson as deputy there. We can always sell Miggy in January

  32. Prem and Sharpy: my main gripe with some NUFC fans at the moment is that they have zero ambition and believe a planted story with Luke Edwards that we only have 60 mil in the kitty. That has been repeated so many times that the lazy option is to just repeat it again. But, Man U and Arsenal are there for the taking. This is the year to do it. To spend. The FFP rules are over 3 years so we can spend big this year and then ease off unless our revenue goes through the roof with Aramco as sponsor and CL football.

Man U: they are a mess and have just proved it again by sacking Rangnick. Ten Hag will have to be a genius but he has hired Steve McClaren so what does that say?

Arsenal: they are not a good team and their league position flattered them. It almost never happens that academy products all come through at the same time and star in the first team. Their recent big splashes havent worked out too well and although Aubamayang did well for 2 years his ego was too much for current Arsenal. Arteta will never be a top Manager.

  33. I think the top 4 this year are pretty much set. Top 2 are obvious. Chelsea new owners have promised 175 mil transfer budget I think. Even Spurs have money this year. Levy pledged 200 mil in order to keep Conte.

But, Arsenal and Man U are vulnerable and the clubs below them are not ready to step into the void. Does anybody really believe that at the end of the transfer window West Ham or Wolves will have a better squad than ours?

  34. Extrapolating Howe’s achievements over a season would provide 62 points currently 6th, and that was effectively achieved without Wilson or Tripps. So we should be able to kick on a bit from there. Chelsea were third with 74 points so mid 70’s should be our target. That is not going to be easy.

If we take our starting 11 out of the equation and put Manquillo in as LB. Our 2nd 11 is
Darlow, Lewis, Watts, Lascelles and Krafth; Shelvey, Longstaff and de Bolle ; Murphy, Wood and Almiron.
How many of them do you actually want on the bench?

  35. Oh great, now my posts are going up again on the site – or there’s a huge delay in them showing if they are😡😡😡.

Not blaming Olly coz he can only ask the others to fix it – but it’s good to see the issues aren’t affecting the countless articles getting thrown up 🙄🙄🙄 guarantee they’d fix the problem if it was 🙄🤑🤑

  36. Prem – I did post a reply about Miggy but it’s not gone on, as is the case with a number of other posts – I posted about Kims link to the tweet and that didn’t go up either 🙄🙄🙄.

Still at least the latest transfer speculation article went up ok 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

  37. That was an interesting second half of the season… Quite incredible actually. Even looking forward to next season which is unusual.

Is there anybody we haven’t been linked with already?

I’d take Henderson, Lodi, Etikite, Diaby, Botman and Nunez. Sounds mad. I don’t see us signing all of them but we can but dream.

  38. so Ashworth has joined the club, knew he was pushing for sept but looks like hes wanted to be in on transfers so has push toon a bit

  39. Fantastic news that Ice – good they’ve got the deal done. I think it’s really important he’s in place ASAP to oversee this summer 👌🏻

  40. I know we did just fine in January signing players & between Howe & Nickson they got the job done.

But the addition of Ashworth early on pleases me.

What happened in January felt like a bit of a quick fix – patch things up and get the job done. That’s what was needed then. But now we are starting on an even footing with everyone else & have the time to do the job right – Dan Ashworth may be the key signing of the summer.

  41. I had not been on Ed;s for about 6 weeks, but in a moment of self-harm decided to have a look today. It is exactly the same, with little football talk and a lot of bickering about nothing. One of them supposedly called another a narcissist which was the cue for about 80 posts to see who the REAL narcissist was and whether this was a mental health problem that should be banned from discussion.

I think I will wait at least another 6 weeks before my next visit so I can keep my own sanity.

  42. Just a small follow up to the latest school massacre. Trump and Sen Ted Cruz spoke to the NRA this weekend. Their “solution” is to only have one entrance to schools and have bullet-proof doors on all other doors. No matter that the latest school HAD bullet proof doors AND and an armed security guard. Have they ever been to a fcn high school? There are numerous buildings and many ways in and out.

Trump also said it was due to “broken homes”. He has kids with 3 different women!!!

According to these people it has nothing to do with guns, the type of guns available, or the access to guns! Their mantra is “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun”. What if he (and it is always a he) turns up at work and shoots up the place. How does the “good guy” stop that if he is not there? The police have also said at many of these mass-shootings that they are “out-gunned” with the semi-automatic weapons.

Do Cruz and Trump and the NRA expect John Wayne to ride into every school shooting with his six-shooter and take out the looney who has a machine gun. The cops admit they cant even do it.

  43. what happened at this latest shooting was the local cops turned up with their pistols but couldn’t do anything against a machine gun. They had to wait for the special force with their own heavy weapons. Meanwhile 19 children and 2 teachers were slaughtered.

  44. I will repeat what I said last week that the last mass shooting in the UK was 5 people and before that there had not been one for 10 years. I watch American news occasionally and there is a mass shooting EVERY WEEK. Nobody can tell me it is not about the availability of guns.

They have this thing in school here called “show and tell”. Little kids take something into school and have to describe it to their classmates. Not a week goes by when some kid doesnt take a loaded gun to show and tell. And not a week goes by when a toddler doesnt accidently blow his brains out with his dad’s hand gun. Sadly, I see it on the news.

  45. I lived in the US for years and never understood the national obsession with guns. I only had one friend who didn’t have a gun.

  46. An article on here said we might be after Calvert-Lewin. It is a myth that he is a prolific goal scorer. He has 45 in 164 games for Everton. And now he is getting injured. If you add the English player tax to the Newcastle tax there must be better options.

If you look at that goal ratio it is about the same as Chris Wood.

  47. Ayoze Perez had 42 goals in 179 games (a lot as sub) for Newcastle. Would we really be getting wound up about resigning Dave Gehan? Calvert-Lewin’s record isnt that much different.

  48. FFS!!! I’ve just written a reply to Eric about the local cops post and it hasn’t posted!!!.

These issues are really p!ssing me off now like – it’s been weeks!!.

So it seems to be if I’m posting it’s fine, but if you reply to a comment it doesn’t like it 😡😡😡

  49. In summary, can we take DCL off the list. He is similar to Wilson but worse and Everton would probably want 60 million for him. I would rather have Paqueta as a number 10 and keep my fingers crossed on Wilson than sign DCL. BUT, I want both. A number 10 and CF, just not DCL.

  50. I actually think we can challenge for top 4 with 4 signings. Targett, a CH, Paqueta and a CF. I am not that bothered about a right winger. If we get Ekitike, then fine but I think we have enough now to fill in for a year.

  51. Eric – it annoyed me the criticism those cops got & the public statement their chief of police made or whoever he was.

Ultimately (the shortened version from what I posted before 😂) those children & teachers were dead the second that kid entered the school.

He went armed with an assault rifle and more ammunition than a soldier going into battle gets – that’s what they found when they went in after he was shot by police. Which is the other thing. He didn’t turn the gun on himself after his slaughter – he had to be shot, and was cleared prepared for a battle.

What hasn’t been said (that I’ve seen) is there were more children & teachers in that school that day – that survived because those first responders contained him to that one classroom until the specialist units got there.
If they went running in the likelihood is they would have been killed to – because they had a handgun & a stab vest & he had an assault rifle & more bullets than a solider going into battle.

What’s not been said (that I’ve heard) is those first responders are victims of that incident too – but did an amazing job slowing him down & saving some of the others in that school that day. They are trained to fire a handgun & engage with armed robbers & street crime – this was military level stuff mate – hence the need for specialist units.

He could have wiped that school out with the way he was armed, but those first responders stopped him. They probably felt completely helpless in the moment & are likely traumatised by the whole event – maybe they are parents themselves?!?!!.
But if they went running in there are suggested, the chance are it would be more grieving families.

They stood their ground and stopped a tragedy being a lot worse – no way should any blame be put on them.

  52. It seems stupid getting DCL in with his injury history when the reason we need another CF is coz of Wilson’s injury history

  53. Eric – I think top 4 is a few seasons off yet mate. Largely because we are so far off City, Liverpool, Chelsea and even Spurs – who I see occupying those top spots while Conte is there & they will strengthen too.

But 5th to 8th spots are there for the taking – but I think that RF spot is absolutely key to us making a real charge for it. I think it’s our weakest position (providing we sign Targett at LB that is).

If it was just 4 in then I think LB, CB, RF & CF. I’d love Paqueta, but I don’t think he’s essential, not as much as that RF anyway.

But I think we could really do with 5 or 6 anyway.

  54. Here are the players we have been most often linked with and my estimate of the chances of us getting them. I think we will get a couple out of the blue that the journos hadnt a sniff of, just like January:

    Paqueta 8
    Targett 9
    Botman 4
    Lingard 0
    DCL 4
    Ekitike 8
    Henderson 4
    Diaby 6
    Nunez 3
    Lodi 4

  55. Sharpy: when I see Republicans tying themselves in knots to come up with a solution to school shootings I wonder if they even have a conscience. Their solution is to have a high perimeter fence with only one entrance guarded by armed security. Then to have bullet proof doors to “protect” the children. Of course it does the opposite and traps them if a shooter gets in. Do they also really think a high-schooler would not find a way over a 6 foot fence?

Anyway, what does their “SOLUTION” sound like. A fcn PRISON.

As In said earlier, most of these people must have never been to a high school. The suburban ones here are open with playing fields and sprawling buildings. Locking these down during school hours is impossible and is about the stupidest idea ever. All to allow these idiot politicians to avoid the real issue of gun control.

  56. Good on Pardew for leaving Sofia because of their fans throwing bananas at their own black players.
He obviously had little other option to be fair, but what a vile situation to be faced with!!.
It’s truly disgusting this still goes on in the world!!.

  57. Reports in France we have agreed a deal (again) for Etikite. Is he the main striker signing this summer, hoping for Wilson to be fitter? If it isn’t and we sign him and a proven striker I would be very happy.

  58. Not much point in making anymore comments til the site is sorted. 🤬🤬🤬🤬
