The Guardian claim NUFC are ‘interested’ in £40m Brighton star – Another agent driven story?

According to The Guardian, Newcastle are interested in bringing Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella to St James’ Park this summer.

They claim that the Seagulls may be willing to let the Spaniard leave for £40m, stating that Man City, Chelsea AND Newcastle are all keen.

This comes from one of the more reputable newspapers and is a story run by senior reporter Jacob Steinburg, however it’s a link that’ll leave most Toon fans scratching their heads.

Cucurella is a brilliant player and someone Dan Ashworth brought to Brighton last summer, but this just feels like a non-starter for so many reasons and another agent driven story.

After all, the ‘richest club in the world’ are the perfect name to throw into the mix if you’re an agent trying to convince Man City or Chelsea to match Brighton’s hefty asking price!

That aside, are we really looking to make a marquee signing at left-back when we’ve just brought in Matt Targett on a permanent deal worth £12m?

Even if we were keen to sign two left-backs this summer, I struggle to see us spending this sort of money in a position that’s just been strengthened – never mind competing with Man City for a man believed to be one of Pep Guardiola’s top summer targets!

A new name linked and from a pretty solid source too, but I’ll be absolutely shocked if Marc Cucurella is a Newcastle United player come the start of the 2022/23 season.
