New signing en-route to NUFC after bagging assist, clean sheet & award in farewell appearance

Galway United have confirmed that Alex Murphy has played his last game for the club ahead of an imminent move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle announced last month that we’d agreed a deal for the 18-year-old defender, who will finally travel to Tyneside to put pen to paper after signing off in style for the Irish side on Friday night.

In his final game for the club, the defender kept a clean sheet, bagged an assist and was awarded with the club’s Player of the Month award following a 3-0 win over Cobh Ramblers FC.

Murphy will link up with our U21 side ahead of the 2022/23 season, joining recent recruits Charlie McArthur (Kilmarnock) and Jordan Hackett (Spurs) at our every-improving Academy.

He arrives with a few seasons of experience at senior level after racking up 32 appearances for Galway – who handed him his first-team debut at the age of 16 – and has represented and captained the Republic of Ireland at U18 level.

Here’s the tribute Galway United paid to the teenager earlier today, confirming Friday’s appearance was his last for the club ahead of his imminent move to Tyneside:
