Injury scare during Newcastle 0-1 Mainz now addressed by Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe has issued a promising update on Fabian Schar after the Swiss international limped off in today’s 1-0 defeat to Mainz.

After the defender pulled up holding his hamstring just a few minutes into the second half, many feared he could be an early doubt for our opening game of the season two weeks on Saturday.

However, Howe has revealed that it “felt more like cramp”, according to the player, suggesting he hasn’t actually pulled a muscle and should be “OK.”

Here’s what the NUFC boss had to say when asked for an update on Schar’s situation:

“I think he’s OK.

“When he came off the pitch he said it felt more like a cramp feeling rather than a pull.”

Elsewhere, it was good to see centre-back partner Sven Botman put in another assured display at the back, with the big man showing his quality and dominance both on the deck and in the air.

Hopefully Schar is fine and his withdrawal was nothing more than a precautionary measure – which appears to be the case based on Howe’s reaction.
