Newcastle handed chance to sign long-term target for £21m – Report

According to reports in Italy, Atalanta are encouraging Newcastle United to make a move for Duvan Zapata after lowering their asking price.

This comes from L’Eco di Bergamo – a newspaper local to the Italian club – who claim that the Colombian has been offered our way for €25m (£21m).

With deals for both Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak both collapsing, it was suggested over the weekend that we were taking another look at the experience striker.

At 31, it’s unsure how much this deal would appeal to Eddie Howe – who seems keen on a younger striker – but with 106 goals in 257 Serie A appearances, it may be a route we explore after showing interest in January.

The report states that Zapata has been placed on Atalanta’s ‘expendable list’ by club president Antonio Percassi, who would give the green light if we come in with an offer that matches his valuation.

With Wilson and Wood both in their thirties, I’d be surprised if we spent this money on another ageing forward. Perhaps a loan deal is something we could explore?
