According to reports in France, Newcastle are now showing interest in Monaco winger Sofiane Diop.
This comes from French outlet Media Foot, who claim that we’ve contacted the player’s representatives over a potential move to St James’ Park.
It’s not yet known if we will follow up this initial enquiry with a formal bid, however they report that Monaco would ‘listen to proposals’ for the highly-rated 22-year-old.
Diop is a France U21 international who can operate down either flank, although the majority of his appearances last season did come down the left.
He bagged nine goals and seven assists in all competitions over 2021/22, including a goal and an assist in seven Europa League appearances on Monaco’s way to the last 16.
The same report also mentions our ongoing interest in PSG talent in Arnaud Kalimuendo, however it seems the Ligue 1 giants are undecided on the 20-year-old, as new boss Christophe Galtier is eager to give him a chance and club advisor Luis Campos ready to cash in following his impressive loan spell at Lens.
I’d take the Diop link with a pinch of salt for now – Media Foot aren’t the most established outlet in France – however he is an exciting young talent who could be attainable, making him the sort of winger who could appeal to Eddie Howe and his recruitment team.
