According to reports in France, Newcastle are showing interest in highly-rated Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.
This comes from Foot Mercato (via GFFN), who claim that we are one of several clubs keen on the 20-year-old Belgian who’s been heavily linked with a summer move to West Ham.
The Hammers have already had bids of €23m and €30m rejected by the Ligue 1 side and are expected to launch a new improved offer ‘imminently’, however the report states that Newcastle, Arsenal, Monaco and Liverpool are also circling.
Onana is a towering defensive midfielder who has received rave reviews in France over the past year for his ability to break up the play and carry the ball into the final third.
He’s also a player Newcastle United new-boy Sven Botman will know very well from his time at Lille, with the pair making a combined 72 appearances for Les Dogues last season.
It seems our priorities lie elsewhere, with the club currently pursuing moves for the likes of James Maddison and Timo Werner as we attempt to bring in a few new attackers, however he could be another name to watch in our search for a commanding young midfielder.
