Player passes medical at Newcastle as club look set to announce surprise signing – Report

According to Sky Germany, Loris Karius has ‘successfully completed’ his medical at Newcastle United ahead of a move to St James’ Park.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper is set to be ‘announced soon’ as our fifth summer signing, with the club making an emergency move for the 29-year-old after Karl Darlow suffered an injury in training this week.

Darlow is believed to have injured his ankle ligaments and could be missing until after the World Cup break, leaving us with just Nick Pope and Mark Gillespie following summer exits for Martin Dubravka and Freddie Woodman.

Dubravka has joined Manchester United on loan, however he can only be recalled – if needed – in January, meaning Newcastle had to act in light of Darlow’s ankle injury.

Karius had a tough spell at Anfield, making two blunders in the 2018 Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, and was released by the Reds this summer after loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin.

Here’s what Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has had to say on his imminent move to Newcastle, confirming he’s passed his medical:
