Toon owners left with staggering bill despite 5 players leaving this summer – The Telegraph

As revealed by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Newcastle United are STILL paying a huge amount of wages – over £100,000 each week – to players who left the club over the summer.

He reveals that, despite some players leaving on permanent deals, certain players no longer contracted to the club are having a portion of their wages paid by Newcastle.

The report states that Dwight Gayle – who is now a Stoke City player – receives £60,000-per-week, yet the Potters are only paying £20,000 of this, as a move to the Bet365 Stadium was only possible if we continued to fork out the bulk of his salary.

A ‘similar arrangement’ also made Federico Fernandez’s permanent move to Elche possible on deadline day, although you suspect we will only be paying this high percentage of a player’s wage for the first year? Anything beyond that would seem even more illogical from a business point of view, especially when both are no longer Newcastle United players.

Elsewhere, The Telegraph reveal that we are paying the majority of Isaac Hayden’s (Norwich), Ciaran Clark’s (Sheffield United) and Jeff Hendrick’s (Reading) wages after all three sealed Championship loan moves.

Reading pay a ‘tiny fraction’ of Hendrick’s staggering £50,000-per-week wages, Norwich cover just £20,000 of Hayden’s £50,000-per-week package and Sheffield United pay just a third of Clark’s weekly pay packet of £40,000.

So, it seems we’ve been forced to ‘sweeten deals’ to shift deadwood, with the new owners clearing up the mess Mike Ashley left – something which hardly helps our ongoing battle against FFP.
