Newcastle officials spotted watching midfielder over the international break – Report

According to Danish media outlet TV2, Newcastle sent a scout to watch Danish Under-21 star Matt O’Riley play in a 2-1 victory over Croatia’s U21’s during the week.

The Celtic midfielder had an impressive game for the youth side, scoring his first goal in just his fourth appearance for the nation in a Euro’s qualifier, culminating in a 2-1 victory on the night but losing the tie 5-4 on penalties.

O’Riley has played a key role in Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side since joining from MK Dons back in January, helping guide the Hoops to a 52nd league title as well as matching up against Europe’s elite in the Champions League.

His top form has also earned him plenty of admirers in the Premier League including the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United who also sent scouts to watch over the ex-Fulham man.

Speaking to TipsBladet, O’Riley recently revealed that he received interest from Newcastle and Leicester over the summer, but admitted that he remains focused on Celtic, performing in the Champions League and earning his spot at the World Cup.

The now £20m-rated playmaker will certainly be in high demand in January and Newcastle will have to be prepared to face a difficult challenge to fight off other potential suitors.
