George Caulkin shares transfer message from “the top” and reveals new Saudi boost

The Athletic’s George Caulkin has revealed what someone “at the top of the club” has told him about Newcastle United’s January transfer approach.

Speaking to this unnamed figure during the World Cup, the North-East journalist asked if there was anyone who’d caught the club’s eye in Qatar, to which he was told “we fancy loads of the players, can’t afford them, though!”

This suggests Newcastle have plenty of high-quality targets in mind, but aren’t in a position to splash the cash in January – a narrative Eddie Howe has hinted at for a number of weeks now due to FFP limitations.

On the subject of money, Caulkin did confirm that our trip to Saudi Arabia earlier this month “made money”, with a host of recently secured sponsorship deals benefiting the club financially.

Speaking on The Athletic’s latest Pod on the Tyne podcast, Caulkin had this to say on all of the above:

“I had a conversation with somebody at the top of the club, having a laugh about the World Cup, ‘see anybody you fancied?

“They said ‘we fancy loads of the players, can’t afford them, though’.

“So again, that is the sort of narrative.”

“I’m told they made money from their trip to Saudi, so that’s good.

“We know about little bits and bobs of a sponsorship they took to get there and then had over there, so that’s good.”
