NUFC loanee suffers serious knee injury after being stretchered off on Boxing Day

Newcastle loanee Matty Longstaff was stretched off with a serious knee injury in Colchester United’s 1-0 victory over Gillingham on Boxing Day.

The 22-year-old has only made six appearances for the U’s since joining in the summer after struggling with a hamstring injury for a number of weeks.

Longstaff was only brought on in the 82nd minute of Monday’s game, but was carried off on a stretcher just seven minutes later and is expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Despite a promising start to his Newcastle career, the young Geordie is struggling to find consistency in the fourth division and looks set to miss a significant period of time.

Hopefully Matty can recover quickly and get back to his best, but it seems unlikely that the midfielder will play a part in Newcastle’s long-term future.
