Shocked Eddie Howe discusses dropping Joelinton after drink driving charge

Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media this morning, giving his reaction to news that Joelinton was arrested by police and charged for drink driving in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He’s refused to confirm if the Brazilian will be available for Sunday’s game, saying he’ll make a decision on that closer to kick-off.

However, he’s revealed how it “very much came as a shock” to those at the club, with Joelinton “very upset” yesterday and aware of “the seriousness of the situation.”

Newcastle will now deal with the matter internally, educating the 26-year-old on what happened, but it remains to be seen what punishment he’ll receive or if he’ll feature against Fulham in 48 hours time.

Here’s what Howe’s had to say on the incident when speaking to the press just moments ago:

“I’m going to have to reflect and analyse and make a decision closer to the game.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure. It came very much as a shock.

“It’s a difficult situation. Joe is very remorseful. He was very upset yesterday.

“He knows the seriousness of the situation and so do we as a club – obviously I can’t go into too much detail.

“I think he understands his responsibilities, and we are now supporting him. We will deal with the matter internally.

“From day one he’s been a very good professional and hugely passionate about his career and the club.

“I was very surprised about what happened. We will back him and support him, but also educate him about what happened. Everyone makes mistakes.”
