Sky Sports: Newcastle turn to £60m man as James Maddison closes in on Spurs move

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United look set to pursue alternative options now James Maddison is in ‘advanced talks’ to join Spurs.

Keith Downie adds that the club are ‘likely’ to target RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai as a result, with the Hungarian thought to be our plan B now Eddie Howe’s long-term target is closing in on a move to North London.

Fabrizio Romano revealed this morning that Maddison has agreed personal terms with Spurs, with The Telegraph reporting last night that Newcastle had ‘cooled their interest’ in the Leicester City star.

As a result, it seems Newcastle will now shift their attentions to Szoboszlai; a player we have watched on multiple occasions according to Sky Sports in Germany. A release clause of around £60m exists in his current contract, but this is due to expire on June 30th, giving clubs the chance to negotiate a lower fee after this date.

The 22-year-old is four years younger than Maddison and comes off the back of an impressive season in the Bundesliga. He bagged 10 goals and 13 assists in all competitions and also scored in their cup final win over Frankfurt.
