Newcastle reignite interest in World Cup star 12 months on from £25m bid – Report

According to new reports, Newcastle United have revisited a potential deal for Benfica goal machine Goncalo Ramos.

This comes via FootballTranfers, who report that our recruitment team are huge admirers of the 22-year-old and have explored the possibility of bringing him to St James’ Park.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with a move fort the Portuguese international, as Sky Sports revealed that we launched a bid ‘in excess of £25m’ for Ramos last August.

As explained in their ‘exclusive’, it’s currently unclear if we’ll make a move this summer or are simply laying the groundwork to make a move in the future, with Eddie Howe likely to recruit another striker in time.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson – who is 31 and has often struggled with injury issues – are our only two senior centre forward at the club. Chris Wood is also yet to be replaced since he left for Nottingham Forest in January.

Ramos bagged 27 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Benfica last season and showed his class at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring a stunning hat-trick in Portugal’s 6-1 win over Switzerland.
