Newcastle drop OUT of Dominik Szoboszlai race as Liverpool move for RB Leipzig star – Report

It looks like Dominik Szoboszlai will NOT be signing at St James’ Park this summer.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Newcastle United have dropped out of the race for the RB Leipzig star, as Liverpool are now pushing ahead to sign the 22-year-old following talks with the player’s camp last week.

He reports that we’ve ‘left the way clear’ for Liverpool to strike a deal. It’s not clear why we have pulled the plug – perhaps his heart is set on a move to Anfield or we know the financials needed to bring him to Tyneside would go beyond our current budget?

Liverpool have ‘been given confidence’ that they can strike a deal for the Hungarian and it seems they are pushing ahead to make it happen.

A release clause in his contract allows him to leave for £61m, although it’s believed that buyout clause will expire at midnight tonight. Whether Liverpool activate that or negotiate a fee with Leipzig, Ornstein expects any deal to involve a ‘significant financial outlay.’

With James Maddison ending up at Spurs and Szoboszlai now looking likely to join Liverpool, it remains to be seen who we’ll turn to next in our pursuit of a right-sided attacker.

  1. Dominik Szoboszlai is a central attacking midfielder, not a right-winger.
Mohammed Kudos 22 at Ajax is the logical cheaper option CAM
Marcus Edwards 24 at Sporting is an affordable RW
We could probably get both for not much more than what Dominik Szoboszlai would have cost

  2. It really makes your blood boil when the likes of Man Utd and Liverpool jump up and down about our supposed spending power when because of FFP restrictions they have far more than us and we are not allowed to compete with them because of those same restrictions.
Szoboszlai like Maddison preferred different destinations and the higher wage structure that these clubs can offer so we need to move on quickly.
FFP is not creating an even playing field except for those who have already benefited in the past ie the Big 6.

  3. Standard Part of the game to deflect from themselves to criticise Newcastle. Shows how much they’re 5h1tt1ng themselves.
Howe sure doesn’t let it effect his plans so it’s just noise of mewling brats.

FFP has only ever been about protecting the self proclaimed elite.
