Nightmare for Alexander Isak and Newcastle as official statement arrives from Sweden

Alexander Isak has been forced to withdraw from the Sweden squad after suffering an injury.

The striker came off with a knock at the end of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham and, after being assessed by the national team’s medical department, he’s been deemed unfit to play over the next week.

Sweden play Moldova on Thursday, then face a must-win European Championship qualifier against Belgium on Monday night, knowing a victory is essential to keep their EURO hopes alive in Group F.

However, a statement from Sweden on Monday night has confirmed that he’s withdrawn through injury, meaning he’ll return to Tyneside for further assessment ahead of next Saturday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

Here’s the statement released by @svenskfotboll late last night:

Alexander Isak leaves the men’s national team’s European Championship qualifying squad. The Newcastle striker came to the gathering with an injury report from Sunday’s match against West Ham and underwent an examination by the Swedish national team’s medical team on Monday.

After that, it is clear that Alexander Isak is not available for games next week and will miss the European Championship qualifier against Belgium next Monday.
