Newcastle identify two top transfer targets – The Times

According to Martin Hardy at The Times, Newcastle United have identified Kalvin Phillips and Hugo Ekitike as ‘leading targets’ heading into the January transfer window.

The North-East reporter claims both are ‘top of the list’ for Eddie Howe heading into the New Year, with the boss a long-term admirer of both players.

It’s thought a loan deal for Phillips could appeal to all parties, with the 27-year-old eager for game time ahead of Euro 2024, Man City open to his exit and Newcastle in need of a short-term replacement for the suspended Sandro Tonali.

As for Ekitike, it’s believed the club have reignited interest in the Frenchman, despite The Athletic claiming otherwise last week, and have become aware of his availability after almost signing him from Stade Reims 18 months ago.

Hardy reports that transfer meetings were held over the international break, with the club keen to strengthen after Tonali’s lengthy ban was followed by an injury crisis that left 13 senior players missing for our 4-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday.

The same piece states that we have ‘no interest’ in signing Al-Hilal’s Ruben Neves in January, insisting Phillips is the priority target. Juventus are also thought to be keen on the former Leeds star, however.
