Dan Ashworth’s future addressed by Eddie Howe as Man Utd links intensify

Eddie Howe has commented on ongoing speculation linking Dan Ashworth with a mid-season move to Man Utd.

It’s believed the INEOS Group have identified the 52-year-old as their leading target as they prepare to secure a 25% stake in the club, but Howe’s comments today offer some reassurance that he’s here to stay.

When quizzed on Ashworth’s future during this morning’s press conference, Howe had “no doubt” that our sporting director is “here for the long-term”, but accepted that is probably a question for the man himself.

Howe then talked up his “hugely important” role at the club, explaining that he’s “connected with everything” behind the scenes and has been a “calming influence behind the scenes” with his expertise and “vast experience.”

Here’s what the boss had to say earlier today:

“Of course I’ve spoken to Dan, but not necessarily about that. It’s very difficult to comment on speculation, whether that be a player or someone in Dan’s position. I’ve got no doubt that Dan is here for the long term, but it’s probably a question for Dan rather than me.”

“I think whenever someone is in the important role that Dan is, hugely important and he’s done a really good job in helping us in loads of different ways [since being appointed].

“He’s connected with everything that goes on in terms of the decision-making at the club. He’s hugely important and has been a really calming influence behind the scenes, his vast experience has really helped.”

Speaking in an interview last month, Ashworth said – “I’m really happy, it’s a brilliant city, club and project. I’m thoroughly engaged in throwing myself into all of those things and really enjoying the challenge. I’ve got NO release clause in my Newcastle contract.”

With speculation ongoing, let’s hope Ashworth is able to put this to bed himself, as we could do without worries of his exit hanging over our heads going into the New Year.
