D-day close in Kalvin Phillips saga as two European giants join race – The Telegraph

The longest-running saga of Newcastle’s transfer window is expected to reach its conclusion soon, with Kalvin Phillips’ future expected to be decided next week.

The Telegraph report that Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Juventus have joined Newcastle in showing interest in the 28-year-old, with conflicting reports making it unclear on the terms of a potential loan deal.

Matt Law claims that sources within Manchester City are denying that deals have been struggling to progress due to financial demands within the loan deal, and have similarly refused claims that clubs must agree to an obligation to buy.

This would perhaps be a huge beneficiary for us, as we can hand Phillips regular playing time for the remainder of this season due to injuries and Sandro Tonali’s suspension leaving our midfield threadbare.

Though moves to the elite sides showing an interest on the continent may sound an attractive proposition, Phillips likely has Gareth Southgate and EURO 2024 in mind, meaning a Premier League move may be his best bet.

Eddie Howe would also have a further consideration to make to other English sides, owing to the domestic loan already handed to Lewis Hall – while both the Eagles and Hammers are yet to make one this season.

Howe may opt for a more attacking option on loan, however all indications are that a more permanent move may be better suited for this position – while a temporary fix in our midfield could prove vital to our season’s progression.
