Alan Shearer: Newcastle got lucky at Nottingham Forest – Really?

Alan Shearer believes Newcastle United “got lucky” in Saturday night’s 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest, feeling the home side should have been awarded a penalty.

Taiwo Awoniyi collided with Martin Dubravka in the second half after a simple punt down the pitch was not dealt with by Sven Botman and Shearer feels the home fans can “feel robbed” that VAR didn’t overturn the referees decision.

Speaking on Match of the Day, he said: “I think Newcastle got lucky there. If it was the other way round I’d be screaming for a penalty. I understand why the Nottingham Forest fans feel robbed.”

I’m struggling with this one. The footage below shows that Awoniyi was already on the way down and never in control of the ball. There’s contact from Dubravka, but it’s the striker who stumbles into his arm?

Shearer then hailed Bruno Guimaraes for his two goals at the City Ground, believing our man of the match was “at the heart of everything good” for Newcastle:

“He was brilliant, he deserved it [man of the match]. Two wonderful goals and his all round, I thought, was magnificent. He was at the heart of everything good, whether he was keeping or protecting the ball, adding that little bit of quality with his range of passing or his ability to find space that not many others can.

“Great ball in by [Kieran] Trippier but that is such a difficult technique to hit it like that. Eyes on the ball watching it all the way and to get direction and power he did, it was an incredible goal. He was absolutely magnificent.

“That’s why the Newcastle fans love him. He’s got a great relationship with the fans and rightly so as well. He’s a lovely man and a very good footballer.”

  1. Think Forest got away with one in 1st half the Centre halfs challenge on schar which was right in front of the ref but that’s been conveniently forgot

  2. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned much is that Botman got a touch on the ball and it should have been a corner!

  3. We all love our club but Forest gifted you 3 goals and it was a pen all day these days with present rules . Old days pushed it to far and wasn’t gonna score but modern times as one of the best cheats ever shearer was spot on !
