Pardew “half hopeful” on Jose.

Hopes over Jose.
Alan Pardew has admitted that Jose Enrique is still a fitness doubt ahead of the weekend match against Wolves.

It had been reported previously that Jose’s hamstring strain was “not too serious” and that he should be alright for the Wolves game. That appears to not be the case any more and Jose will be assessed throughout the week in an effort for him to prove his fitness ahead of what is one of the most important NUFC matches of the season.

It’s not all bad news though as Leon Best and Jonas Gutierrez should both be fit to feature at St James’ Park on Saturday. On the current injury situation, Pardew had this to say:

“I’m half hopeful that Jose makes it,” Pardew told The Chronicle. “Jonas is fit, and Joey Barton has another week of training under his belt. It’s just whether Jose makes it through. Leon Best’s only a slight worry for me.”

If Jose doesn’t make it I expect we’ll see Shane Ferguson make a full Premier League debut, and if he plays anything like he did at Stoke then I’ll have no worries about the lad, especially if he has Jonas in front of him helping out with the defensive side of things.

Another potential selection headache is just who to play in the centre of defence. Mike Williamson has the shirt at the minute, but Steven Taylor is waiting in the wings to capitalise. I’d probably stick with Williamson to be fair as I don’t think it’s a fantastic idea to break up a central defensive pairing ahead of an important game such as this. That plus I don’t want to see Taylor backing off an attacker like they are wielding a knife again.

Stephen Ireland is available for selection although I doubt that a starting role will be afforded to him due to his lack of match sharpness. It’s a shame really because if Ireland was fit to start it would mean that we could push Kevin Nolan further up the pitch and get him into the positions where he can do his damage. Since he has been pushed back into midfield his goals have dried up, and we need goals at the minute.

Just my two-penneth worth anyway….

As I said in an earlier article about the NUFC team news, the lines of communication regarding injuries and what not have been opened, much like I thought they would, and no doubt we will hear more as the week progresses.

Hopefully it’s all good injury news!

  1. I predict a draw. Not having Barton is a huge blow, would have said the same about Jose but I’d love to see Ferguson get 90 minutes.

We never win the so called ‘must win’ games.

  4. I don’t think Wolves will be that great but I just can’t see where the goals will come from. I can see this being a game where we huff and puff but can’t blow the house down and it’ll end 1-1 or something.

  5. Wolves have a great team spirit, something vital and worried we’ve lost ours!

  6. A key question for me is down to whether Jose is fit. If he is, it opens the option of putting Jonas RW, Fergie, LW and moving Joey back to the centre. That allows Nolan forward and sets up a nice 4-4-1-1…

Trouble is, you can’t practice it without Jose there, so I expect it’ll be a straight Jose/Fergie swap, along with the same for Tiote/Guthrie, and one of our more tried-and-tested formations. Probably a good thing.

  7. I don’t want to see Ferguson at LB, he’s not a defender he’s a forward. It makes a mess of the backline because Collocini gets dragged out wide and everyone has to move along.

  8. I actually think Guthrie could have a good game in the middle and surprise a few people. Last season when we walloped teams at home it was largely down to his link up play and deliveries into the box.

  9. Can’t see us picking up any points this weekend. Wolves are the exact kind of **** club that we struggle against. We also always tend to come out flat after a break. We really need a Tiote type player against wolves and he won’t be available, and we have a lot of key players that are either out or less then 100%. add to that our inconsistent home performances this season and I’m not feeling too optimistic…
But anyway, what did I miss???!!! I missed you crazies… 😉

  10. I won’t be there on Saturday unfortunately as I will be sunning myself in Spain. Will try and watch it though. Beer tastes better in the sun…

  11. I agree, DJG. Guthrie’s had more than his fair share of stick on here, but I can’t recall a bad performance when he’s been played in the middle. (Plenty out wide, but we know he’s **** there.)

I just hope AP doesn’t try again to impose some radical new formation and that Stoke was an exception brought about by injuries. We’ve got just 8 games to go and need 6 points. Safest bet is to stick with tried-and-tested stuff.

  12. Wolves is a must win really, if we win it leaves us a win away from safety which im sure wont be too hard to do. We should just rest jose, Ferguson seems a more than worthy replacement so far the only thing i have doubts over is his size.

  15. Just got so many doubts about this game think we will be luck with a draw. Can only hope the eleven on the pitch are as up for it as the thousands in the stands.and outside.Surely they know what is at stake there supposed to be pros.Come out fighting this time for !!!! sake!!

  16. Good choice – my place is just south of there near Algorfa. Yep, mid-20s this week. I just hope it stays like that for another few weeks…

Great time to head out. Quiet, cheap, not too hot. Low arsehole count. Freezing swimming pools, mind – what is it about them and heating water??

  17. Nutmag – yep, I know what you mean. Last week I was definitely expecting to get turned over by Wolves, and it could easily happen if the spirit is indeed broken. But I’m clinging on to the Stoke game being an abboration brought on by delayed AC departure shock and some key injuries. Now AP can return to familiar formations hopefully he will do so.

  22. I haven’t felt this worried about playing Wolves ever.
If we lose it doesn’t bear thinking about. To be honest, if you are losing against Stoke, Blackpool, Wolves and Blackburn at home, then you’re asking for trouble anyway, thats your 6 pointers already played and lost.

The optimist inside me is dying a slow death. The only thing to save it is a victory.

  23. To be honest, while 3 points on Saturday would lower my blood pressure a great deal, it still wouldn’t stop me worrying. Remember beating Blackburn 2 years ago and thinking we’d cracked it?

It would be far too easy for a stack of clubs to get to 42 points, and far too easy for us to continue a poor streak.

2 more wins, or a win and 3 draws. From eight games…

Should be easy. Won’t be, though. I can goal difference being important, it’s that tight.

  24. DGJ – do you mean you don’t appreciate the sheer joy of launching a confused feline over a nearby wall with a bit of enthusiastically schadenfruedian toe-punt action?

When I moved into a bigger house in January I almost went to buy a cat, just so I could prove a point by swinging the fekker around a few rooms. Especially the smaller ones. 😈

    Only joking. I think… 😐

  26. Jersey: actually, I think Guthrie is exactly what’s needed against Wolves, especially with their injury worries. Tiote’s wonderful at breaking up play, but Guthrie can release an attack far more quickly, and has a killer through-ball on him. We’ll be ok.

    I think…

  27. Don’t worry, DJG – I was just being a git out of boredom and because my sprog’s given me yet another lurgy. Not really an animal basher. Not even cats.

Although clips of cats falling off stuff are somehow funnier than they ought to be. Go figure. 😛

I must admit that when a neighbour’s cat leaves a steaming pressie for me and my kid in the garden there are times when it’s just as well I’ve not caught them at it with a heavy object in my hand. A better response, however, is to follow it ‘home’ and back out a DORP (dump of religious proportions) on their lawn. 😈

It appears I have issues of my own. 😯

She tried everything to keep them out, from ridiculous-looking fences to repellent sprays, gadgets and so on.
    Know what did it eventually?
A mixture of weed killer and sardine juice painted on a few leaves.
Not one to mess with, my mum. 😯

  35. its funny like some people don’t like cats, but they never complain about the multiple piles of steaming dog shyte that cover our streets. Must be because if it’s in their garden it’s ‘personal’. 😆

  36. DJG – I think you’ve got a point about the ‘personal’ thing there… but surely EVERYONE complains constantly about the dog shyte, don’t they?

  37. My ex-girlfriend ended up with their ‘family’ mog, and I had to share a house with 4 lodgers, her, and this incredibly loud, if good-natured, siamese. Trouble is, it had developed a habit of leaving steamers on every new carpet, and then doing that dog trick of pulling itself along, **** down and rear legs in the air, to wipe its **** afterwards. Real class.

My ex defended the cat right up to one night when we went to bed and there was a familiar smell of cat **** from somewhere. Our bedroom was about the only room it hadn’t ‘marked’ after re-carpeting the entire house, so I was up and ready to kill the thing.

Then we realised the source was definitely very close by. Then we noticed the brown stripe right across her pillow. No mine – just hers.

I nearly died laughing. I think I miss the cat more than her. 😆

Poor lass. I think when I actually peed a bit laughing at her it may have been the final straw for the relationship.

  42. I lived in Whistler for a while, and used to walk the rescue home dogs; placcy bags in pocket at the ready. In the winter when there’s several feet of compacted snow and you’re trying to control a (usually mad) dog, you have to be very quick if you’re to prevent its output steaming its way below the snow and beyond reach.

Every year they have ‘**** week’. That’s when an entire winter’s worth of dog turds that sank into the snow before the owners could get to them get revealed by the spring snow thaw and start to thaw out themselves, revealing all that locked-in nutty goodness.

A good week to avoid. Bit whiffy about town.
