Pieters deal unlikely, Bridge deal also unlikely, Forster off to Celtic, again.

Bridge lined up for Toon move? Nah!
It seems as though our pursuit of a left-back to replace Jose Enrique is proving more difficult that had first been thought.

This comes as news emerged that Erik Pieters is scheduled to take part in PSV Eindhoven’s Europe League tie in Austria on Thursday evening.

Talks have been ongoing for a few days now between the two sides and whilst a deal is ultimately not dead it would be unlikely that we will have anyone signed in time for the Saturday lunchtime clash against the rotters from down the road. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t particularly want to see Ryan Taylor on derby day. In fact Alan Pardew said much the same thing earlier on in the week when he reiterated his hope that he would be able to leave the “set piece specialist” out as he would have dedicated left-back to call upon.

Apparently it would take a fee of around £6 million for PSV to agree to a deal, and it would take wages of around £30,000-a-week for the player to agree to come. Personally I don’t see the problem. The Jose Enrique replacement effectively pays for himself with the money brought in from the sale of the Spaniard to Liverpool last week, and isn’t that the way we seem to do things nowadays?

No matter as apparently there is an alternative. Step forward Wayne Bridge who has once again been linked with a loan move from Manchester City to St James’ Park. Now I really can’t see this one coming off for details which I will go into below, but most imprtantly I’m glad it’s not going to happen as, quite frankly, Wayne Bridge is not what he used to be. If he ever used to be anything of course, apart from English and consequently over-rated.

So why won’t it happen I hear you say? Well, quite simply, money.

There would be absolutely no point in plumping for Bridge over Pieters. Apparently it would take a fee of £2 million to secure a loan deal for the ex-England player, with wages of £50,000-a-week to boot. Roughly adding that up it equates to £4.6 million to be left in exactly the same position we find ourselves in now next season. It’s a waste of money, and that doesn’t sound like Newcastle to me.

On the other hand we have Pieters who, at just 23, would give us a long term so
lution to the left-back issue. He can improve and develop on Tyneside and he fits in with the “plan” that is apparently in place. To me it’s a no-brainer. If this policy is being adhered to we’ll get Pieters. If not then we’ll get Bridge which will highlight that this “plan” from the owners is not a plan to develop people and players. It’s actually a plan to run things as cheaply as possible.

In other news, Fraser Forster has signed for Celtic again on another season-long loan deal although this time there is an option to make the move permanent. That gives us another squad space when taking into account the “25 man” rule as Forster would have to registered to play with us.

The despicable Neil Lennon had this to say regarding the concluded deal for Forster:

“There are a few little snags to overcome but we hope to have him registered in time for tomorrow night,” said Lennon.

He added: “He has been the main target since the end of last season. We did put a bid in but it was knocked back but we worked hard in the background to try to bring him in so I’m very, very pleased.”

So one out and none in seems to be the order of the day. Sound familiar? Time is ticking on and Newcastle only have until lunchtime on Friday to sign a player so that they are eligible for the big one at the weekend. Even then would you really want to throw someone straight into a Tyne-Wear derby? A new league? A new team? A new country? A new culture?* I’m not so sure…

* Culture does not apply to Sunderland unless we are talking about the bacteria around the locals teeth.

Frustrating is a bit of an understatement!

  4. I said at the start of the summer Celtic would get Forster again and it is the best transfer possible for both clubs.

Celtic get a first team keeper, Newcastle solve their 3 keepers and 1 space problem, Newcastle get some money either this summer or next summer for a keeper they never had the confidence to even play in a competitive game and Forster gets his first team action.

I can’t remember a transfer that makes everyone happy like this one does.

  6. You know, I was maybe just starting to believe that Cashly was/is on the right track but this latest non committal says an awfull lot. The situation is a total nonsense and you really have to wonder if the guy has anything between his ears. How the hell did he manage to build his empire using this kind of financial nouse.
Whatever he says in front of the cameras or in the boardroom has absolutely nothing to with his total disregard for our club or it’s supporters.
The man is a charlatan, a con-man and a thief. He is raping Newcastle United in plain view of all of us and I would never wish ill to befall anyone but in his case, I will make an exception.
I’m not saying that he is trousering the dosh, rather tucking it away to improve the image of the club in order to sell up. My God, It cann’ot come soon enough.
The Dutch lad is so obviously a superb opportunity to buy for the future so why the hold-up. Maybe he’s a closet scumbag from down the road or is he just a scumbag.
Oh, and Wayne is deffinately a bridge too far . All the best for Saterday lads. 1-2 methinks. HWTL.

  8. Where does the editor of the above article get Lennon to be despicable? Using offesive language like that is not appreciated!

Lennon was polite and profesional and has helped both NUFC and Forster in this instance. Forster won his first medal with Celtic last year and had a record breaking shut-out record to boot, so why lower the tone and use some profance language?

The small minds and small person who wrote this article is not representative of NUFC, a proud footballing team

    Hail! Hail!

Clearly his control over the board of geordies isn’t what he thought!! At least he can now play in Europe as opposed to having a vacation there instead. He can win silverware as opposed to wear it because he can’t afford gold. From a manager who has a fantastic record of failure to one who is a major success. From the worst fans in the EPL to the best fans in Europe. From losers to winners. From cheats to honesty. anyway… what a joke this window has became toonsy. i normally dont get much of what fatty nad ddekka do and none of AP says either but this one has me proper stumped as to the hold up and it goes back to what i said last night on that other blokes thread from an nufc fans group or some worthless **** like that..
Its the lies… we get fed one on ev ery signle statement, really we do. Ashleys rent boy said that they have a player lined up in the evnet of jose going, we he has gone now and we dont have our player in or even close do we. Its even more stunning when you look at it, AP’s choice is younger than jose, will cost the same to buy as what we got paid for jose, wants less wages and is a fully blown young dutch star in the rising. Add this to the fact he said he wants to come and that his club have said they would not stop him coming. this one is a head scratcher as to what the problem is. WEll, not really, the issue is obviously money isnt it… ashley will want to make a miilion quid for his back pocket and get him in for 20k a week too.
Another player out today then in the shape of our third choice keeper…. we have no probs getting shot of the players.. just seems to be like pulling hens teeth the other way round though.

I get that. I know Celtic were once a decent force in European football. But that’s in tha past. I was countering the point that someone made that Celtic were winning European Cups. My statement was supposed to mean that they struggle to win a game in Europe these days, never mind a cup.

  55. I do believe that Celtic were in the knockput stages (last 16) of the Champions league 2 years running, was it 2006 and 2007, having beaten the likes of Manchester United along the way. In 2004 Celtic got to the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup knocking Barcelona out and eventually being eliminated by a very good Villareal side.
All this with 35 million per year less to spend than all EPL clubs due to getting 2 million per year telly money because of…geography and history. Remember Newcastle would be one of the clubs who would do everything in their power to prevent Celtic and Rangers ever playing in the EPL because you would be one of the clubs threatened. Celtic are absolutely huge and can compete with the likes of Newcastle any day of the week even when so impoverished. Level playing field and, literally, Newcastle would not be in Celtic’s league.
