David Sullivan – Does he really know the details of Ba’s NUFC deal?

Sullivan talks about Ba
What is it with people in London? A place where it’s easy to get consumed with everything around you, yet there are a few who seem to be overly concerned with a football club that is some 280 miles away.

First off we had Harry Redknapp gushing details of an alleged clause in the contract of Demba Ba to all and sundry, and now we have West Ham United co-owner doing much the same with regard to his former player.

Redknapp was quoted as saying that Ba has a release clause in his contract allowing him to walk away from Newcastle for a sum of £7m. David Sullivan has reiterated that figure and divulged a bit more information by suggesting that Ba himself could be entitled 50% of any transfer fee over £7m.

The West Ham supremo spoke candidly to Hammers fansite ‘West Ham Till I Die’ where he went through a serious of figures regarding the deal between Ba and West Ham. As a Newcastle fan I don’t really care about that, but when it comes to NUFC, which I do care about, Sullivan said:

“I’m told he’s got a £7 million get-out at Newcastle and he gets half the money over that. They keep denying it but I think you’ll see in the summer – He will leave Newcastle or he’ll get a monstrous rise to stay there.”

“If they get about four million, half will go to him, so if they sell him for £7 million they’ll only net about three because they paid his agent £2 million to get him out of here. Getting £3 million is not bad, but for a player of his quality it’s not fantastic.”

Well that last line is stating the obvious isn’t it?

On a serious note, to me it read as though Ba will get 50% of anything OVER £7m although I could be wrong on that one of course.

Does the Porn Baron really know the details though? I mean he is going to know about the happening at his end of things, but is he really privvy to the nuts and bolts of any deal between Ba and NUFC? I seriously can’t see why he would be.

I have little doubt that Ba does indeed have a release clause. In this instance the silence from the club has been deafening which is odd when you consider how quickly they like to come out and deny things. On the clause though, not a word, which to me indicates that there is one.

The only way this kind of chatter will get sorted is in the summer as we’ll know one way or another exactly what is going on. Will Newcastle give Ba another contract with terms not as “flexible” as they are now? Or will Ba exploit the clause in his contract and head for pastures new?

I very much doubt that Mike Ashley would be prepared to lose out by selling Ba on the cheap, and £7m would be on the cheap, but on the other hand logic sometimes goes out of the window with this regime so I guess the rumours and murmurs from other clubs will continue.

I just wish they would poke their nose out of our business!

  1. Totally agree. Why do they have to stir up this ****?!

On a football note, anyone else wonder if Pardew might be tempted to play 4-3-3 now that we have Cabaye, Tiote, and Guthrie playing fairly well; and with Cisse seeming ready to go for it. I would imagine with Barfa on the right wing. Possibility?

  2. On most contracts there is a section that says that its Private and Confidential for both parties. If there is this clause in Ba’s contract dirty dave can legally be sued!

  3. FSOTC
think he’s insinuating that Ba will play left-wing as it says he can in FIFA12 . think he played there a bit when he played for hoffenheim.

  4. I read it the same way as you do Toonsy, some people just like the sound of their own voice, and as a result they cannot prevent themselves from talking *****, if Ba got 50% of any fee over £7m, the the release clause itself was £7m, then no club would offer more than £7m as it would be unessessary, so according to Sullivan, Ba would be entitled to 50% of nothing, I’m really pleased that some people are incapable of thinking before they speak, due to the fact that I can laugh my tits off at their total stupidity

  5. I believe that it is Ba’s agents who are leaking the information as they smell a big money move in the summer 😉

  6. I read Sullivans’ rant yesterday and yes , he is bitter.

Indeed , it was Karren Brady and not Harry Redknapp who first raised the
    Demba Ba contract.

Sullivan contradicts himself on the clause he has at Newcastle as Toonsy pointed out.

However I had a big laugh when he claimed they bought Ba for £5m but had only paid £500k of this before they lost him to Newcastle and that Hoffenheim were the losers.

I think he was talking to the West Ham faithful and trying to save face. I cannot believe that Hoffenheim would sell Ba for £5 and then only accept a fraction of that fee without kicking up an almighty stink .

I think West Ham have had to pay the full fee and that they have been well and truly mugged .

That is why they are so bitter.

  9. The simple facts are, they need to pay big wages to keep the wolves away.

This is where the reality train began. To get and keep the best players you have to pay the going rate.

This is the crossroads for Ashley and he must take the correct route or the criticism of his policies will continue and increase.

  13. I’ll just re post my comment from yesterday “I doubt Sullivan would be privy to a contract that is only between Ba and Nufc, Sullivan wouldn’t be involved at all at any stage, once the end of the season came ba ceased to be a hammers player due to his “relegation clause”…..Sullivan as usual talking oot his ****”

The part of the interview where he says “I’M TOLD he’s got a £7 million get-out at Newcastle and he gets half the money over that”…..says it all, he’s making it up or going off rumours started by that slapper Brady and continued by dodgy ‘Arry 🙄

  15. Andymag
Sullivan said there is a £7m release clause.

He also said that Ba would get 50% of any transfer fee over £7m.

With a £7m release clause no club would offer more that £7m because we would have to accept a £7m offer.

As a result Ba would never get 50% of any offer over £7m because no offer over £7m would come in.

Sorry, I didn’t explain it very well, I hope this is a bit clearer

      (Quote)

  16. patchy
so the money nufc gets depends on whether ba gets any money at all. if its just 7m then we get it, if it was 9m then we’d get 8m and ba would get 1m, but if the clause is at 7m then ba won’t recieve any money so wouldn’t benefit him. have i got that right ❓ 😎

  17. makes no difference hes going nowhere, why would he persuade cisse to sign if he was going,he must rate the club a lot to recomend it to his mate

      (Quote)

  18. Andymag thats exactly right, but what we also have to realise is that because of Ba’s supposed release clause no club would offer 9m because Ba’s contract states that we have got to accept a 7m bid, so Sullivans claims do not make any sense at all

      (Quote)

  19. I think he probably knows the ins and outs of the deal, as everyone else in the game does. He’s probably a bit pissed off about what happened so is letting off steam.

Will Ba be here next season? I’ll be amazed!

  20. It’s obvious that Sullivan hasn’t a clue of what’s going on with Ba’s contract – he’s generally a self-serving ***** that is attempting here to save face.

Demba is not a guaranteed stay, but should the squad perform well and move into Europe this year, I bet that we’ll give him a significant pay raise and he’ll stick around to partner with his compatriot Pappiss.

il be amazed if he aint here next season meself, think hes just bitter cause he was made to look a right wally over the ba deal

  22. Fact is, Newcastle has been a sleeping giant for a few years now. It scares the **** out of the southerners to have a big club in Newcastle with sorted finances and quality players wanting to pay there again. Plus you have ‘arry, who sees us as a threat in the short term, and West Ham who have to be humiliated that they never signed Ba to a long term deal due to his supposed injury history. No surprises here really

      (Quote)

  23. I also LOVE andrew’s idea that we shift to a 4-3-3. I think that wing play has been our weakness, and between them Guthrie, Cabaye and Tiote will be able to stick to their defensive duties well enough that we could carry Ben Arfa in the team.

HBA doesn’t play well when he plays with slow footed attackers who don’t see his clever (and sometimes reckless) passes coming. I think that we now have a fit midfield three that can play with Ben Arfa, not to mention the Dembas up front.

I just wet myself thinking about this. We do NEED Tiote and some active strikers to make the formation work, just see the second half against Fullham for what happens when our defense doesn’t get any support.

      (Quote)

  24. One thing you would say about Ashley, and that is that he is a shrewd businessman. He would surely hate to be screwed over by another club nicking Ba on the cheap. That may be our saving grace in terms of offering Ba an improved deal. Also the fact that Cisse just moved here can only bode well. Clause or no clause, in the end it will come down to whether Ba wants to stay here or not.

      (Quote)

  25. I must be the only one, but I’m not worried about Ba, at least this summer. He seems to love it here, we just brought in his countrymen, a lot of French speakers, the club has shown ambition and is on the up, he regularly sings Pardew’s praises, etc. I think he has earned a pay raise and expect the club to follow through with one,

      (Quote)

  26. I understand what you guys are saying about the clause, but there’s one thing you haven’t thought about wheter this 50% clause being true or not. When you point it out like you are doing right now, sure it makes no sense.

But see it like this then instead.

We have to accept a bid of 7M or over. Then it’s all about the club that got their bids accepted and what Ba himself wants. So lets say two clubs with the same stature are in for him. First club bids 7M to activate the release clause. Second club bids 10M and also get accepted. This would most likely put the later club in the driving seat atleast when it comes to money. Ba would get 1.5M from the last club in sort of “signing fee” without it actually being a signing fee.

So if money is the deciding factor for Ba he would choose club B instead of club A.

So if the clause exist it’s really not that stupid to be honest.

      (Quote)

  27. I’d love to see the 4-3-3 as well, i think HBA is still the best player we’ve got, naturally with his flair, and I can’t see him getting any better sitting on the bench but i just don’t see simpson being able to look after himself without protection of a winger and 4-3-3 hasn’t really worked for us this season when its been played. As for demba, I think ashley would offer him a new contract just so that he doesn’t miss out on half of the transfer fee when ba inevitably leaves. I don’t think he will this summer though (fingers crossed)

      (Quote)

  28. I don’t doubt that there is a clause involved. Free transfers have tons of bargaining power, and the only reason that we don’t have more of them is because agents get portions of transfer fees and are more interested in having players sold and agreeing new deals.

I just don’t think that Sullivan knows the details.

      (Quote)

  29. JL –

In the 4-3-3 that we’re discussing, one of the midfield three would help out the Simmo. One of the front three drops back to help out in the middle, not that Tiote really needs it to be honest.

      (Quote)

  30. Will say the same as I did yesterday on this one… nobodies opinion or ‘what they were told’ really matters. Southern media, other chairmen, managers and anyone else with a gripe or a big mouth will have a go at Newcastle and always have because we have been an easy target for years.

In all likelihood Sullivan is throwing his dummy out and having a whinge because the deal cost him money and he’s not happy we went for Tomkins, who is probably unsettled now, as far as I know he refused to sign new deal? not 100% on that though, maybe someone could confirm..

Look only opinion that matters is that of Demba Ba, and he and his family are happy here, in fact he said he laughed when he heard the speculation about him moving while he was at the ACON. We are pushing for Europe which was the promise made to him and others probably upon signing and he’s at club that took a chance on him when nobody else would. Now he doesn’t seem like the money grabbing, unloyal type to me but maybe I’m wrong.

Yes he does have a clause, we know that much for certain because it has not been denied by Newcastle or himself. But as for this bull of him being allowed to leave for £7m, nothing to back it up bar hearsay. Could be similar to the Neil Taylor contract in that if he wants to talk to another club he can but by no means do you have to accept a bid for that much.

Besides all that there’s a reason a host of clubs didn’t go for Ba in the summer and Stoke backed out. His so-called ‘ticking timebomb’ knee is something that carries with it huge insurance, a sum most clubs are not willing to pay or certainly take the risk on. We did, he’s played constantly and we reaped the rewards. Aly Cissokho apparently has something similar because of his teeth, why Lyon want so much for him.

Sorry for the rant, will leave it there for now, just getting a bit tired of the hysteria some bell-end can cause about our players with no foundation behind it. Had it with Tiote for over a year and now Ba. Until you see a bid or a player ask to leave, it’s all bull, as we seen with Tiote over time.

  40. Guys I think the ‘over’ 7m was his bad English. He goes on to say this: ‘If they get about four million, half will go to him, so if they sell him for £7 million they’ll only net about three because they paid his agent £2 million to get him out of here.’

**** maths but thts a reflection of his understanding.

Fredde – surely it’s be more efficiently for club A just to pay 2m straight to ba as a signing bonus. Ba gets more money and only costs te club 9 instead of 10.

As for how Sullivan would know this, maybe ba’s agents used newcastles terms to try to negotiate more money with west ham?

As for suing him, I assume that breach of confidentiality would only be enforceable on the signatories to the contract or every media outlet in the country could be facing a law suit.

Who knows. It may be true. It may not. None of us know, let’s just hope we keep him happy and sign him up come summer. I do think it says something that a few weeks ago (I think in the sun) Pardew was talking about Simpson and guthries contracts being higher priorities anyway.
