Game On! Newcastle v Wolves

Game On against Wolves!

Well I think it’s fair to say that the two weeks just gone has seemed like a proverbial lifetime.

The reason – no NUFC action!

That changes of course this afternoon as we return to Premier League action and look to put behind us a horror show at White Hart Lane last time out. It’s not the only sub plot to the game today though as Wolves will be trying exorcise their own demons after going down 5-1 to their local rivals last time out.

I must confess that I don’t actually know what it is like to be thumped 5-1 by your closest rivals. I’d ask a Mackem but I can’t stand the smell of them so couldn’t get close enough, plus I don’t think they’d be able to answer without covering me in some form of mouth froth.

Anyway, I’ll save that malarkey for next week. Right now it’s managerless (sort of!) Wolves to contend with. I say ‘sort of’ because Caretaker Manager Terry Connor has been handed the Molineux managerial reins until the end of the season. Will that lead to the “new manager” effect on his players? We’ll find out this afternoon I guess…

For more background on the match you can peruse my match preview by clicking here or you can take a look at NUFC stats’ number crunching stat attack by clicking here.

That’s enough talking for now anyway as we prepare for battle against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Can Alan Pardew’s men keep the Wolves from the door? Or will Terry Connor’s men huff and puff and blow the house down?

Howay the lads!

  1. Wolves have us sussed as a one-man team. Stop Ba and you stop the toon.. 😥

The Wolves centre halves have been rock solid today, Ba and Cisse haven’t haven’t had a sniff. I fear we might see Shola coming on.. 🙄

  2. Well, that’s us with all the big game winners on now…

we’re chasing the game now, a bit time ffs…

Why the flock doesn’t Simmo hit a cross on the run instead of stopping the ball and taking the momentum out of the move ? 😯

  3. Sorry like but this is ALL down to Pardew with his safety first tactics in midfield. The lack of bite and appetite shown in the first half was abysmal..

  4. not impressed with pardew at all in the last two matches, wide open at spurs and pitiful when easily in control at home against wolves FFS…

  5. I thinks its not all benny fault we are so poor you know its one month he has not played you can not change the game every time he comes as sub, this kind of players need a run of game if they don’t have they never good. You need to understand that. And it mades the most dangerous action in the second half.

  6. MM…tactics were poor but it’s not “ALL” his fault, can’t really blame him when players can’t pass a ball, that is “all” the fault of the players concerned 😉

  7. What kind of a performance was that from some of our guys, especially Willo, Guthrie and Ben Arfa were fricking **** IMO!

  8. Whey, could have been worse…could have lost it playing like that.
Poor performance, roll on next week….and now I’m away to get p!ssed. Later lads

  9. 1 point then ,lucky to get that. How we conspired to play so **** after second goal is beyond me. Will need to step up against the Scum ,they will want to put todays result right you can bet.

  10. @4411
You are fucking dishonnest, Benny at least try to make something to be dangerous. He lost some balls ok, but he made 2 dangerous shoots. and he comes again when we were completely dominated, I think Pardew must give him a run of games.
ANd second decision sell Simpson to a Championship club.

  11. Our lethargy and lack of spark today was shocking. Even at 2-0 we didn’t look convincing. Maybe we are running out of steam ?

      (Quote)

  12. don’t know why ben arfa is getting **** he’s the only one who looked like doing something, why the midfield sit so deep all the time, still maintain that simpson and williamson are useless.

  13. I get why people have picked up on HBA as he failed so many attempted dribbles but gotta agree with the ones on here who say at least he was having a go

  14. Our passing was disgraceful today!!!

Defence isn’t good enough and nothing on the bench to shake things up.

It’s a point so will keep us above Liverpool but on this display I dont see us making 4th spot, that was disgusting to watch!!!!!

  15. Alex, sitting deep is all part of Pardew’s safety first tactics. Even at home against relegation candidates in turmoil and without a manager…

Must admit though, the Wolves central defence looked a lot more solid than ours.

  16. I’d like to say we got what we deserved but we didn’t deserve the point!

Utterly fcking shambolic, even in the first half we were *****.

Also for the avoidance of doubt, Williamson is a bag of ***** and he’s a Championship bag of ***** at that!

Probably blown the best chance of CL football fir a long time because we totally neglected the centre of our defence in two transfer windows.

    Pathetic!

  17. Poor performance, Wolves deserved something from the game, still poor to throw away a two goal lead.

Guthrie was shocking when he came on, Ben Arfa not much better. Gutierrez, nice goal and all but sweet jesus he was awful second half!.. Presume Tiote had nothing left in the tank, otherwise it was absolutely mental to take him off, best player on the day by a country mile.. Cabaye was very poor, Simpson too, Williamson too. Whole team really bar Mr T, can’t blame Ba though, no decent service whatsoever.

One good thing to come out of the day, the mackems took a hiding off West Brom!

  18. I am not going to slate the team to much here because what they have done this season is amazing, but what I DO have a problem with is allot of our players talking up our chances for european football next season and then go and produce a game like that which lacks effort and determination in every area of the pitch, it wasnt skill we lacked, we wasnt outplayed like in our last match we simply didnt focus and put 100% into it, not only that but wow did the subs let AP down… Yes HBA does some great stuff, but he also lose possession again and again and Guthrie, sigh, I understand his disapointment to lose his place after doing alright but he dont get back into the team with that performance.

  19. Sharpy, it’s a real pity that we couldn’t keep the three points today. I fear we’ll really regret this result, a win would have kept Liverpool at arms length, and kept a bit of pressure on Arsenal and Chelsea. Though after todays result we maybe don’t have what it takes…

If we play the same way against the makkems as we did today, the fans will hang Pardew.. 😯

      (Quote)

  20. How pathetic was Simpson on the first goal and he is consistently our worst player, tactics again were ***** as was ball retention and also bizzare substitutions, Tiote off for Shola?

      (Quote)

  21. I prefer a player who looses possesion when he try a dribble, or a risky pass than players who make passes back and back and back and back again because they don’t want to risk to loose the ball and the ball end to Krul who threw it. Its all our play after the second goal we score.

      (Quote)

  22. Nothing good has come from the day for me, shambolic performance after going 2-0 up inside 10 minutes against a side in disarray.

Any other manager would have turned the screw and we sat back and did **** all.

      (Quote)

  23. HBA definitely needs whole games. He would do much good in 90 minutes if he wouldn`t feel pressurised to show what he can do while we are chasing a victory against 10 man defense.

      (Quote)

  24. A point won at the end of the day. We could have quite easily have lost that game. One point is better than none. We really need to up our game next week against the makkems.

Here’s the team, I can see it now…

    Krul
    Simmo Willo Collo Santo
    Jonas Cabaye Tiote Ben Arfa
    Ba Shola

    Cannot wait…bring on the makkems…

  25. that really hurt me. reminds me of the relegation season how we just couldn’t get a win. falling off a boat and missing the water sort of thing. after 20 minutes i thought we were home free, and then they totally lost their heart which has been the thing that has made us good this year.

it’s going to be a long run in watching us sink down the table if nothing is done. we don’t have a defence….

      (Quote)

  26. The shocking thing for me today was motivation. They just seemed to be half asleep for the majority of the game. Missed placed passes, poor decision making but also a lack of impetus. From 2-0 you would expect the team to get a bit of confidence and momentum but that was dire.

      (Quote)

  27. Every second half we play like a bag of faeces! The opposition change tactics at the break and Pardew does not respond to the new threats or opportunities.

He fails to apply the most basic managerial techniques depending on the situation e.g by half time the game was won we did not need to keep the high line. Wolves first goal exploited our high line, deflection yes but the what created that opportunity was the exploitation of our high line.

Second Goal set piece another weakness of ours. On paper in every department we are superior to wolves:

-Player for player we are by far superior (fact)
    -Playing at home (fact)
-Wolves have no manager but rather a coach with no managerial experience yet he totally out thought Pardew today (fact)

Wolves are rubbish by measure of all barometers complete and utter rubbish, yet today they made us look like the team in the relegation Zone. He threw on Ben Arfa but simply played with no defined on the ball tactics.

Here is a fact from my initial analysis from my first viewing of the game There was no (on the ball) tactical pattern today suggesting he just picked his best available players regardless of the fact we may have a player whos attributes allow him to exploit an opposition weakness.

Poor poor poor! On all accounts

  28. Stu/Moreno.. what exactly was well said? agree Williamson isn’t good enough but how exactly would have buying another centre back have stopped either of those goals? A better all round centre back still isn’t going to get Danny Simpson to make more of an effort to block or outjump someone who’s main and probably only strength is his heading ability

      (Quote)

  29. @Munich Mag: The same team picked today will be the same team we play against Sunderland! Pardew picks his best available players forget player attributes Pardew does not take that into consideration. Just sends out his best players and hopes for the best.

  30. Keith,

Well there’s the guaranteed starting spot regardless of how motivated or talented the player is he is starting. We have needed a better CB since the day Taylor was injured. I am pretty sure Stu’s ‘blown best chance of champs league football in a long time’ comment suggests he didn’t just mean this match

      (Quote)

  31. Lesson not learned from Fulham, absolute **** in the second half, football is a game of two halves and 90 minutes NOT 45 minutes. Europe??? Some on here are kidding themselves. Pardew and players please shut up and stop giving it big ones to the big boys because you are not good enough and it is starting to get embarassing, not least when we have to play them.

      (Quote)

  32. you should never put guthrie rm, he’s unbelievably **** there, put benny on for tiote and play 4312, with raylor coming off for obertan. And ATTACK FFS!
Hasnt been a day for the NE
    NUFC draw (after leading)
    sunderland hammered
    middlesborough beaten
    hartlepool hammered
    gateshead beaten 🙄

      (Quote)

  33. Worst thing is, at half time I thought “What a great day this could turn out to be for us” Chelsea were only at 0-0 and with their current troubles a defeat wasnt unthinkable while Scum were 2-0 behind which if it stayed that way would put us in fourth with the Scum staying further away from the top… Well, it didnt end up quite so good in the end did it…

      (Quote)

  34. Moreno,

If Stu meant for games to come too then speculative but fair enough. Don’t think the defence was the problem today though. Poor performance all round but midfield just didn’t show up. Jamie O’Hara ran rings around Cabaye all day and Gutierrez made Zubar look like Micah Richards.
