A little look at another NUFC transfer target

Yacine Brahimi
If you listen to reports in the French press it would seem that Rennes midfielder Yacine Brahimi is looking to move away from Stade Rennais and has handed in a transfer request.

Combine that with our penchant for all things French in terms of transfer policy and you have another French player who is being linked with a move to us.

Will it happen? Heaven only knows as to be honest we’ve been linked with dozens of players already and the transfer is still yet to open officially. Is this just another in the long line of transfer links that never come to fruition or is there something genuine in us being linked with Brahimi? Time will tell whether or not we see a former team-mate of Sylvain Marveaux appear at St James’ Park.

Brahimi has two years left on his Rennes contract so would cost a bit of cash if we were interested in landing him. At the age of 22 he has represented France at all youth levels and currently plies his trade for the U21s at international level.

He is known as being “technically gifted” and was the subject of much interest after graduating from the famous Clairefontaine academy where he elected to join Rennes citing that he was impressed with the ability to continue his studies whilst playing football at the club.

All in all he’s made 48 appearances for Rennes (with another 34 for Ligue 2 side Clermont prior to that) scoring six goals at Ligue 1 level. The boy has skills, as you can see from this Dennis Wise style video.

The fee required varies according to which report you pick up at any given time, with somewhere in the region of 4-8 million Euros being required to seal any deal. We aren’t the only ones (apparently) interested in him either as Bundesliga outfit Borussia Mönchengladbach, although they are also said to be interested in former Blackburn midfielder Junior Hoilett.

Personally I would prefer Hoilett as he has proved he can cut it in the Premier League, but I think Bracimi would prove to be a belting plan b if, in the likely event it has to be said, that the club don’t share my view.

Your thoughts please…

  1. Know nowt about him, but looks decent if the vid is owt to go by.
I think Hoilett to Borussia M is as good as done….possibly 😕

  3. Another attacking midfielder? Assuming we are playing 4-2-3-1 we will need 3 on the pitch. We already have 12 to my thinking. Would another be unlucky for some? 😆

      (Quote)

  4. Hoilett to BM seems pretty much done. Reports in Germany included quotes from the club talking about how they’d ‘got a 8m player for 800,000’
( UEFA’s compensation rules differ from the FA’s)

  5. Ice…it’ll be bollox that then, Ashley would want the cash “before” buying a replacement.

  6. I like the ‘we are linked with’ stories better than ‘ we will lose’ stories but unfortunately there is a good chance that they are both BS. It fills space it papers which in turn fills space at the bottom of the cocky cage…

  7. I agree with Ice on this one like. It’s clear to see the kid has some talent but when you need 5 or 6 different angles of a shot that hits the post it’s not great. I think we will have really missed out if we let Hoillett go to Germany and then folk out £5m for another player new to the league.
Particularly when we are more in need of defenders and centre forwards. Like Prem says, we have about 12 midfielders now and some waiting for their chance of first team footy.

I don’t mind the idea of getting in midfielders if they are quality but I want to see a defender or striker as our next signing please

  17. Ice, how many players can the “big” clubs actually sign? I can’t stand it when players say ‘Newcastle and some big clubs are chasing me’ fuk off then, ask owen how good it is playing with a big club…

      (Quote)

  18. ICE@14-Will be very pleased to miss out on him ,I have said all along he’s not for us with the whole attitude thing.

Saw the back of the Sun today with Hazard stating he only joined Chelsea cause they won the CL .Not a word about the club being his first choice or it’s history or fan base 😯 .A right piece of work he is, talk about fairweather players . 😉

Toonsy ,Yacine looks good but it’s youtube so not a good way to access really ,he looks to have good balance though and a bit like HBA in a way.
Why all these midfield players though ,makes me think we gonna lose Cabs or Benny 👿 .

      (Quote)

  19. Ice 🙂 There is a reason Ritchie’s back is always sun burnt… while he is purving down the beach, he has to lay down, so he doesn’t get arrested for indecent exposure 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  20. Kim don’t start more rumours about Cabaye and Benny please 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  21. KIMTOON i think cabs is safe for another season seems to me toon are getting younger m/f players in ready to step up before they cash him in,but tiote is a worry and will go,just my thoughts like

      (Quote)

  22. Ice , Tiote is a goner for sure imo.

AMF- It’s just my glass half empty thing again 😉

      (Quote)

  23. Hazard and Hulk…. Chelsea are certainly signing some players even though they don’t have a full time manager.. good to see money is still the ultimate motivational tool in a negotiation… obviously their new manager will have to deal with the team he is given.. It worked out well for AVB 🙂

      (Quote)

  24. Quote from NUFC target Douglas;
“Five clubs are interested and there’s a bigger club than Newcastle. I cannot still say anything about it, but I hope soon to have my new club.”

Well **** off to your bigger club, don’t want you anyway as you are ****.

Where does that leave Mata? He was Chelsea’s best player last season. Will they play him in his less favored AM role.

  27. a hundred and fifty grand a week wages each my god what planet do these people live on,hazard will take a season i think sure to be a marked man,the hulk well ive watched him quite a lot not worth that fee like imo, anyway both seem to have there head up there ****,be good to see how they get on or maybe done 😉

      (Quote)

  28. Andy, **** knows mate tbh.. that’s for the new manager to sort.. who ever it is, they will have a task.. it won’t be easy to shape a group of induviduals into a team, specially when they have been drafted without a managers input..

      (Quote)

  29. 150k a week… f*ck me that is a joke (shaking head as I type).. football has lost touch with the common man. Money will kill the game if it continues the way it is.. Fifa should be cracking down harder to protect the game. They should have a wage cap or something like that.. Mind you 150k is not a big amount to Fifa, its only a small bribe really 🙂

      (Quote)

  30. think the CL win has gone to romans heed,i think he knows who the new manager is and working on his blue print all funny gannings on there 😕

      (Quote)

  31. So much for FFP……shame really. That was UEFA’s last chance to really fix European club football. But the decision makers at the top still get rich so who cares. 🙄

      (Quote)

  32. AMF aye mate a small back-hander works wonders bloody blatter is one of the wink wink guys it stinks, they are under payed if you go to m/city two or three are on over two hundred grand 🙁

      (Quote)

  33. Douglas = clueless. What a mug!!

He’s a sack of **** and obviously doesn’t get that if he was that good, clubs wouldn’t have waited to buy him on the cheap. I reckon this kid could spoil our dressing room and the teams togetherness, which was an important factor to last seasons success.

I’d love us to go for Steven Caulker from Spurs, he’s just a young un but played most of last season for Swansea and was solid, wouldn’t surprise me if Rodgers tries to take him to Liverpool

      (Quote)

  34. “Five clubs are interested and there’s a bigger club than Newcastle. I cannot still say anything about it, but I hope soon to have my new club.” – Douglas.

Sounds to me that he is going to a ‘bigger’ club and he has agreed that he will not name them. It hasn’t stopped him naming us though! Definately doubt he will come now.

      (Quote)

  35. How can the pl continue to run with 90% of the teams running at a loss each season.. the bow will have to break sooner or later.. if the so called glamour teams like Liverpool can’t make any money what hope is there for a long term. It is not good economics no matter which way you look at it.. rant over 🙂

      (Quote)

  36. I’m a fan of Hoilett I must say. Can understand him moving to Gladbach though. They play some really attractive football and they should have a decent chunk of cash after selling their star man Marco Reus to Dortmund. I think he’s spent some time on loan here in Germany too, which could influence him.

Not too sure about those comments from Douglas. Hardly doing himself any favours if he ends up coming to Newcastle. From what I’ve read elsewhere apparently he needs to be employed in Holland til August to gain Dutch citizenship so this could be a drawn out affair.

Also, just want to add that I’ve got a blog over at http://www.extratimeandpenalties.com. There’s a post on NUFC and France’s chaces at the Euros, which might interest some of you (if you haven’t already had a read). Cheers!

  39. AMF@44 now theres a thought mate, that builds my hopes up he isnt comeing, your on the ball today 😉

      (Quote)

  40. aussie magpie fan @ 42, The biggest problem now is that player wages are so high, clubs like Man City and Chelsea are paying wages that are unsustainable and then there are average premier league players like Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan on £60K a week because they can point to how much the Gareth Barrys and Frank Lampards are getting.

      (Quote)

  41. see told you were on the ball today amf,ill have to stop richie infecting my grey matter 😉

      (Quote)

  42. DJG – we keep hearing that football is a business now. So what business can continue to run at such large losses? OK some of the bigger clubs have huge earning potentials but even that seems not enough now days.. the bubble will burst soon I reckon..

      (Quote)

  43. Ice 🙂 conversing with Richie will naturally dumb you down over a period of time mate 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  44. Aussie – Thank you for reading my post properly, unlike Ice!! 😳 😉

I reckon Douglas may be referring to Liverpool as his “bigger club” aswell, think they will have an interest in him as there defence is **** poor!!

      (Quote)

  45. Robert @ 54 Yes, he looks like the typical mercinary that doesn’t care much about England or the premier league, except that he wants to go there to fill his pockets.

Hopefully! We are in a good positon when that days comes 🙂

  47. ‘Personally I would prefer Hoilett as he has proved he can cut it in the Premier League’

With his 12 goals and 7 assists in 81 games do you think he would be worth the money?

      (Quote)

  48. Ben Arfa has the same amount of assists as Hoilet in 30 prem games and he’s hardly a big provider.

      (Quote)

  49. I think it is obvious that some players are just in it for the money and don’t care where they earn their wage, like Nolan and Barton or Shaun wright Phillips who has spent the best part of his career sitting on benches to earn the biggest wage, when he could have played elsewhere week in week out.
But then you also have players who aren’t driven by money, and I believe we have players of that mentality in our squad. For example, I don’t believe the likes of Tiote, Colo, Cabaye or dare I say it Ba are driven by money. I think these players are happy playing infront of a huge crowd, week in week out and appreciate the sense of being wanted by a solid PL club who can challenge for cups and top 4 places, whilst still earning a good wage.
I think that is one of the things our scouts are looking out for in potential new recruits.

  50. Sharpy17 @ 60. Some interesting points. A footballer is a bit like a car, you wouldn’t want to buy one with high mileage would you. SWP will have low mileage and years left in his knees ect. Someone made the wise decision to get Sol Campbell with about 1 million miles on the clock I think! 🙂

      (Quote)

  51. DJG – That would be Sir Chris who had to convince and plead with Ashley for him to be signed 😉

      (Quote)

  52. Ice – 😉 😆

DJG – I can’t say I’m entirely sold on that theory like. But I would agree that the signing of Campbell wasnt the best either

      (Quote)

  53. If Mulumbu comes in I would surely think Tiote is on his way out for a huge fee. I would think Chelsea want him most but it’s all guesswork. Enjoying your ariticles more and more toonsy. You have a talent for it. Keep up the good work and the guest articles are good as well.

  54. I had to laugh at Brenden Rogers when asked about being linked with the Chelsea job befor he joined the Dippers ,he said ” why would I go to Chelsea ,I want to enhance my career not ruin it ” 😆 😆

Ice @33- If we still have Tiote ,we know how they’ll get done 😉

      (Quote)

  55. Kim – that’s pretty bloody cocky like isn’t it, and really puts the pressure on him to do better than Chelsea next season, otherwise he’s enhanced nowt.
To be fair to him though, it wouldnt surprise me if other managers have the same view with what Chelsea did to AVB and Ray Wilkins

      (Quote)

  56. To be fair to Brendan Rodgers, he said that, referring to Chelsea sacking their managers every two weeks – he didn’t want to go there because of the instable environment .. I don’t think that is being cocky, just realistic about how it is for a manager working under Abramovic ..

      (Quote)

  57. Just think of AVB – he came with glowing references. Fast forward 6-7 months – he is out of a job and is suddenly no ones first choice anymore. Valencia, Barcelona, Roma and Inter have hired other managers, just to name a few …

      (Quote)

  58. I just hope Liverpool do even ******* next season after having spent another 100m, the fans will be crying for KD to return then , wonder what a fourth season without CL will do their revenues/fanbase. Still dont get what the attraction of Liverpool is to plastic fans as they’re mugs and are a boring team.

      (Quote)

  59. Funkness
Love how Chelsea can to pay Porto 12m in compensation to get AVB for 6 months of **** football 😆

      (Quote)

  60. Agreed, Andy .. The thing is though – £12m for a manager would be a shitload of money for most other clubs, but for the Russian, that’s just badly spent pocket change 😉

      (Quote)

  61. 😆 Another MF we would have enough to supply most of the bottom half with loanees 😀
Tis Funny to see peoples opinions on Douglas change so quick 😆 I like Ice still hope we don’t get him.

      (Quote)

  62. Dave ,Me ,ice and I’m pretty sure Andy have never wanted Douglas ,but I’m glad he’s marked his card like that as he can’t lose face and come to us now thank god. 😀

      (Quote)

  63. Funkiness – I think it’s fair to say that despite winning the FA Cup and CL final, Chelsea had a poor season in the EPL. However, Liverpool still finished 12 points behind them, so for Rodgers to say he went to Liverpool to enhance his career is cocky IMO.
I know what he meant by it but it’s one of those comments that has the potential to come back and bite ya right on the ****
