Filthy stinking rich!

TV money
There is more than likely going to be a lot of stuff that Mike Ashley, and indeed any Premier League owner, will know about before it actually happens.

It happens in any business of course as the men at the top tend to get wind of important things before they happen. Could that have been the case with this new bout of TV rights that promise to swell the coffers of any team that happens to be in the Premier League at the time?

The new deal, which kicks in for the start of the 2013-2014 campaign is worth a shade over £3bn and will run for three years meaning that for each game broadcast by either Sky or BT the Premier League will receive £6.5m, some of which will then be passed onto the teams who are participating.

It makes you wonder if all of these season ticket offers or ticket offers were priced in as they knew a deal like this might have been forthcoming? I’ve still not worked out the business sense behind such a long term ticket price freeze – to me it seems like cutting your nose off to spite your face – but if an increase in revenue was known it would have made it a bit easier to account for.

In terms of prize money it will mean that the team who happens to finish bottom of the Premier League will pick up more than Manchester City have raked in for winning the thing. To me it seems like reward for losing but hey ho, it is what it is I guess. The ladder between the Premier League and the those below is about to be pulled up a little bit more though…

The deal is the largest in the history if the Premier League and the rise comes at a time of financial austerity which defies the rise in cost. The original deal between Sky and the Premier League was worth £633,000 per game. In 1997 thins jumped to £2.79m and in 2001 it jumped again to £3.64m per game. However in 2004 the deal fell and games dropped to £2.47m a game before picking back up in 2007 to £4.12m per game. A smaller rise took place in 2010 to £4.3m per game – the current rate – which will be replaced by the new deal in 2013.

Of course that is not what each club gets per game, but it’s pretty safe to assume that each as the level of money goes up then the split each team receives will also rise.

Before anyone starts thinking that this will give us a help in the transfer market, I’d just like to point out that it will be the same for EVERY club in the Premier League potentially making transfer negotiations more difficult as more sides have finance to offer players a deal that may interest them.

Interesting times for the Premier League perhaps?

Shame, I wanted Poland to go through, how the hell Russia went from winning 4-1 in their 1st match to being knocked out of the group I’ll never now.

  2. Shame that the only chance that a co host will advance past the group stage would eliminate England, provided they beat us and France lose to Sweden.

  25. One issue sill remains unresolved from the start of the season.. could Cabaye be considered as a class player 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  26. I thought the Cabaye argument had been deferred until after next season when we have more data to support our analysis…

      (Quote)

  27. Good point Witters, we will park this debate until after the 12/13 season.. Only then can it be argued.. Troy will need this time to take his blinkers off also 🙂 🙂

  28. Galatasary say that they aren’t signing Demba Ba because he isn’t a big enough signing for them ….. So they want Bentner isn’t?! 😕 😕 😕

      (Quote)

  29. Anyone follow Hamady Ba on twitter\?

Baby Ba fckin loves the toon, no doubt he’ll be egging Demba on to sign up.
Really frustrates me when people believe the rags, we have Lineker going on about “twitter rumours” saying Ba has signed for Galatasaray. His own brother says it isn’t true but still people believe the rumours!!

I can’t see the situation being resolved tbh. Don’t blame Ba at all, can’t blame the club too much either.
None of us would willingly worsen our own contract which is what he would be doing if he took out the clause without getting a pay rise.
But i also see the clubs point of view not giving wage rises to new signings.

    Unfortunate situation.

  30. Aussie…I think Troy will need that time to justify his transition from Cabaye isn’t class to Cabaye is class & how his **** doesn’t deserve to be seen in fenwicks window! 😆

  35. Hey people. While we’re on the subject of Sky, just wondering what people pay here for their TV packages, and if anyone is with Virgin instead?

I’m just trying to sort out my elderly grandad’s Sky TV package for him. He’s been a customer for 15+ years, and his old Skybox is on the blink. They want him to pay £110 to upgrade it to a Sky+HD box since they don’t make the old ones anymore. Looked online at their deals, and new customers can sign up with them to get a free box, and a cheaper monthly rate than he’s paying! When I complained that this seemed unfair, after his 15 years of custom, I was basically told it’s tough. 👿

      (Quote)

  36. JON aye its a problem bloody sky are rip off, just jack it in within a month they will be back at you to re-join and offer you all sorts, hang in there mate
you will win,or you could always go for a dreambox 😉

      (Quote)

  37. Jon R @131- God it hacks you off so much, I’ve had same problems in the past with sky so when I got treated the same as your Grandad I left for Virgin . It can be more pricey depending what you go for but the customer service is very good . u.k call centres where most tech issues can be fixed there end if you phone them an d if your box or remote breaks it’s fixed free ,no call out charge and if you say your box is playing up they will often upgrade as a matter of routine . They may work out £6- £10 a month dearer but you save on equipment insurance monthly premiums you need to pay if you have sky. Plus you’ll end up with an old sky box for yonks untill you can afford to buy a new one. I’m on virgin ex large package ,that’s all channels except sky atlantic , Got all sports and movies and espn ,top speed broadband phone landline at £90 a month. But you Grandad can create his own bundle to his requirements ,get him to give them a call they are really helpfull I’ve found. Knock Sky into a cocked hat imo. 😉

      (Quote)

  38. Jon ,Ice makes a good point as Sky ring me almost monthly now trying to get me back making all sorts of offers, but they seem to have a problem understanding my go forth and multiply approach to them. 😉

      (Quote)

  39. The best way to get a better deal is just to call up and say you want to leave SKY, give a half-arsed excuse why, they’ll quickly say that they can upgrade you and say you’ll pay less.

      (Quote)

  40. Thanks guys (and Kim ). From what I can tell the Virgin package is almost £10 a month cheaper than his current Sky package for equivalent channels, plus 6 months with another tenner off, so definitely seems good. Think I need to write down exactly what Virgin are offering, then call Sky and give them an ultimatum 😈

Ice – god I don’t think he could cope with a Dreambox, he’s still struggling with his VHS player :p

      (Quote)

  41. JonR @131 – Sky have an existing customer offer to upgrade to a free HD box plus the hd pack free 3 months and £100 M&S voucher. And no I don’t work for them. Or M&S.

On the subject of bartering with SKY – I thought tales of getting your subscription were just gobsh*** but I phoned sky when they weren’t showing NUFC matches a while back and cancelled the sports thingy. Then while we were talking I said come to think of it, I’m buying a Freesat box so jack the lot, and was given the customary pleasant ‘OK, Bye then’.

2 Weeks pass and ‘Retentions’ call me, enquiring as to what made me leave. I think it is important to note that before they offered me anything, I was totally blase and uninterested, to the point where they then started offering. I have for the last year had Sky HD, with the HD pack, Standard, Kids and Sports pack for £32/month. Not sure how much more it should be, but the lad who I work with up the road has an old analog sky box, standard pack plus sports (he only watches the golf) for knocking on £50/month. Moral of the tale? They will take you for what you are willing to pay, but if you keep your nerve and stay away a while, they WILL get back to you – stay calm!

This is the SKY forum isn’t it? 🙂

  42. TSUNKI all “gen”is handy mate weather your on sky or maybe thinking about it,they are robbing gits like 😉

      (Quote)

  43. Ice – Agreed. But collectively we are **** at standing up to the greedy gets. How can they offer so much cash for the screening rights unless they knew for a fact we’d stump up for it? I have me season ticket coming for next year, but I know I won’t have the steel to cancel the sky in case they show an away game I can’t get to.

I am so weak. Don’t hate me 😥

      (Quote)

  44. They were quite happy to lose my £ 60 a month or what ever it was I was paying them 5 years ago, so I thought sod em .within a month they was ringing me up and continue to do so the gits. 👿 They AND Virgin got us all over a barrel to a certain extent and removing sky sports news from the free to view channels was a sly move as well, I mean its not like you actually see any action on it. I used to watch it in the kitchen now I can only see it on me main t.v with the Virgin box 👿

      (Quote)

  45. Wow that is ****. Loads of old stuff in there, it’s like a threatening letter made of old newspaper clippings.

  46. Ice
aye I read it earlier, answers his own question at the end of the article saying Ba doesnt want to leave, why bother writing it? There’s no reason that he’d ever want to move back there for.
