Filthy stinking rich!

TV money
There is more than likely going to be a lot of stuff that Mike Ashley, and indeed any Premier League owner, will know about before it actually happens.

It happens in any business of course as the men at the top tend to get wind of important things before they happen. Could that have been the case with this new bout of TV rights that promise to swell the coffers of any team that happens to be in the Premier League at the time?

The new deal, which kicks in for the start of the 2013-2014 campaign is worth a shade over £3bn and will run for three years meaning that for each game broadcast by either Sky or BT the Premier League will receive £6.5m, some of which will then be passed onto the teams who are participating.

It makes you wonder if all of these season ticket offers or ticket offers were priced in as they knew a deal like this might have been forthcoming? I’ve still not worked out the business sense behind such a long term ticket price freeze – to me it seems like cutting your nose off to spite your face – but if an increase in revenue was known it would have made it a bit easier to account for.

In terms of prize money it will mean that the team who happens to finish bottom of the Premier League will pick up more than Manchester City have raked in for winning the thing. To me it seems like reward for losing but hey ho, it is what it is I guess. The ladder between the Premier League and the those below is about to be pulled up a little bit more though…

The deal is the largest in the history if the Premier League and the rise comes at a time of financial austerity which defies the rise in cost. The original deal between Sky and the Premier League was worth £633,000 per game. In 1997 thins jumped to £2.79m and in 2001 it jumped again to £3.64m per game. However in 2004 the deal fell and games dropped to £2.47m a game before picking back up in 2007 to £4.12m per game. A smaller rise took place in 2010 to £4.3m per game – the current rate – which will be replaced by the new deal in 2013.

Of course that is not what each club gets per game, but it’s pretty safe to assume that each as the level of money goes up then the split each team receives will also rise.

Before anyone starts thinking that this will give us a help in the transfer market, I’d just like to point out that it will be the same for EVERY club in the Premier League potentially making transfer negotiations more difficult as more sides have finance to offer players a deal that may interest them.

Interesting times for the Premier League perhaps?

  1. Hope holland score next – make it interesting. Think if Portugal score I think the Dutch will start kicking and loosing their cool.

Ronaldo has a Mr Whippy hair cut!!

  2. Axel@149 I’ll second that. 😉

Dave @150 Trouble with other countrys is they can’t see past Man u, Chelsea,Arsenal and Liverpool and now Man city. Glad Ginola set the record straight.

  3. **** me Ronnies slap some brylcream on at half time hasn’t he, there’s the manager trying to give a team talk while Christiano stood winking at himself in the mirror while he sorts his barnet 😉 😎

      (Quote)

  4. SHARPY17 i hope holland do start losing it in the last 10 minutes and DeJong does a Ben Arfa job on RONALDO

      (Quote)

  5. Axel
If he did it to Ronaldo, de jong wouldnt play football again, the press would slaughter him 😈

      (Quote)

  6. Axel – you may well get your wish now buddy.

Was a good goal that like but the Dutch have been well below average in this tournament. We twist about our National team but on paper the Dutch are far stronger but have been very disappointing (my feckin sweep stake team as well)

Hope Robben gets subbed and spits the dummy again and RVP gets sent off

      (Quote)

  7. wat a larf if the two ‘worst’ teams in the ‘group of death’ go through 😆
oh cancel that Germany scores 🙄

      (Quote)

  8. i said from the start the dutch wouldnt get through,to many big heeds in that camp, they always fight among them selves, dicks

      (Quote)

  9. SHARPY17 not only have they been well below average ,they have been totally ***** . Alot of dutch are blaming Van Marwijk for only having one game plan and only changing things when its far too late to save themselves .

      (Quote)

  10. RVP has been **** poor!! and to be honest, haven’t really seen much to get all that excited about Afellay either … could keep his price down and put off other clubs?

      (Quote)

  11. Well that’ll be Germany and Portugal through to the 1/4 finals then .cause I can’t see Greece and the Czechs beating them in a million years.

      (Quote)

  12. Axel – think he could be blamed for playing too defensive against germany and denmark but to be fair RVP missed chances you’d have expected him to put away. Don’t think it helps him when the likes of Robben spits his dummy when he does make changes like. I know it was a difficult group but to finish with no points at all, you have to fancy him to get the sack now like?!

So is that Germany v Greece and Portugal v Chekz?

      (Quote)

  13. SHARPY not a lot of dutch could understand Affelay’s inclusion in the squad , he hardly played last season for Barca because he was injured . Not only that they took Narsing and never played him while he had the most assists in the Eredivise last season .

      (Quote)

  14. Got to agree it’s virtually a bye for Germany to the semis. They’re going to win it, aren’t they? I have a sneaky sneaky feeling Spain are going to be vulnerable. Not to us though. 🙁

      (Quote)

  15. Biggest of which was taking the job in the first place by that showing. Ruination of a perfectly good team.

      (Quote)

  16. Lads yeah Van Marwijk has made mistakes but you can’t blame him for the fact that RVP and Robben have been ***** and the rest of the players all like to fight with each other because of their egos 😉

      (Quote)

  17. Axel – which Dutch player that we have been linked with so far would you most like to see at the toon?

      (Quote)

  18. Yeah fair enough the players have a lot to answer for, but it’s like Domenech with that chronic French side – selection is a courageous step in the process and much could be done at an early stage to select a team that actually wants to play for the team. Management is about a lot more than just pushing your best players on the pitch. It looks like another episode of players succeeding in pushing over the manager.

      (Quote)

  19. SHARPY Luuk De jong and i am pleased we have dropped our interest in Douglas . One player we have not been linked with but would love too see is Narsing. As for Anita he has potential but would not walk straight into our team but his Ajax team mate Anderweil would .

      (Quote)

  20. Anyway, anyone get the horrible feeling England could succumb to 1-0 against a very ordinary Ukraine?

    Me neither.

      (Quote)

  21. Tsunki thats the power the players have and the countries FA, the manager basically is just the coach.
Say Van Marwijk dropped the big time charlies RVP and Robben etc and they got beat he would then get the blame for not picking the big players, thats just the way the game has went

      (Quote)

  22. BIG DAVE your right you cant blame him for his best players losing form but he should have changed things and didn’t . One thing i will say in his defence , the dutch have a chronic shortage of defensive talent the very best defenders in the Eerdivisie are Belgian Vantonghe and Anderwiel

      (Quote)

  23. So, for whatever reason, Van Marwijk wasn’t the man to get them playing. I will concede that if players decide not to perform, it doesn’t matter what tactics you adopt. But there are managers out there that can sort that attitude out.

      (Quote)

  24. Axel – would love us to get De Jong and Anderwield like, and also pleased we’ve ****** Douglas off. Have you seen much of Rosales?
I still like Pieters but he’s going through an injury stage of his career so doubt it will ever come off

      (Quote)

  25. TSUNKI@187- I agree Ukraine could be a sticky wicket for us for sure. We really got to keep hold of the ball better and start defending set pieces more skilfully too or we’ll pay dearly. Ukraine will want to better Polands showing and have a partizan home crowd behind them ,it’s going to be a tough game and not the walk over everyone thinks imo. Ofcourse it all depends which England turn up . 😉

      (Quote)

  26. Typical that we have to be the team to either knock out or let through the home nation. We can’t win, figuratively.

      (Quote)

  27. Sharpy@193-Agree on those choices ,Toby would be great I reckon.
The pieters thing is interesting as the very fact he’s injury prone makes him more likely to sign for us ,going on our past recruitments. We seem to tread where angels fear in that regard. 🙄

      (Quote)

  28. Ice – I’m afraid you have completely lost me again buddy?! 😕
I don’t remember mentioning De Jong being in the team?! Nigel De Jong has been in the team all 3 games but Luuk De Jong has been on the bench and not played at all

      (Quote)

  29. TSUNKI as a club trainer Van Marwijk is well known for his handling of difficult players . Trouble is as Trainer of Holland you dont have the depth of quality as say Germany , Spain ,France or Italy his hands are tied a bit in that respect , he needs his best players to be on their best behavior but we all know the Dutch spit the dummy out ever since the time of Cruijff , Van Hanegem and the van der kerkhoff’s .

      (Quote)

  30. it was luuk de jong i was on about not playing, give your phone back to your lad,hes more with it 😉

      (Quote)

  31. The Dutch are a real enigma ,if England had a team with that much talent we’d be unstoppable I reckon. They are a funny old lot ,always shoot themselves in the foot when it matters. 🙄

      (Quote)

  32. SHARPY i think we should leave Rosales alone , not that he is a bad player but no better than we already have . As for Pieters your right the last 2 seasons he has been getting one injury after the other , Shame because when fully fit he is a good defender that can play equally well as CB as LB . just dont expect him to be an attacking LB he is a true defender .

      (Quote)

  33. Ice – I have never said anything about De Jong playing or not playing is the point I’m making, are you reading the wrong persons comment?

      (Quote)

  34. I know, I know, they’re the latest petulant lot to hit the international stage. Not entirely convinced by the depth of quality, that’s not really an excuse as, on paper anyway, they have enough talent to keep up with most. A very average spread of talent can win the tournament as Greece and Denmark have shown in the past. I agree that in some cases, a team can club together to rid themselves of a manager they don’t like, and take their side down the toilet, for example Chelski with AVB, who miraculously revived to win the CL. But playing for country is a different thing, or should be, and motivation should be at the managers disposal. He has a team full of free transfers on a whim, so he can call the shots more than any club manager. How did Roy handle taking Terry but having to leave behind Ferdinand? Tough choices can be made if they make the right team.

      (Quote)

  35. KIMTOON i reckon at this moment England have as much talent as the Dutch , Just look at wellbecks goal and how Wallcott played when he came on not too mention Rooney and the Ox has impressed me every time i have seen him .Add too that the old heads Cole , Gerrard and IMO Defoe (natural goal scorer) we are better than most give us credit for .

      (Quote)

  36. ANDYMAG they have depth in attack but not in defence apart from the goal keepers . All their best midfielders are attacking midfielders apart from the **** De Jong who is a thug .

      (Quote)

  37. SHARPY @182 i said @ 185 de-jong meaning thats who i would like at toon i never put luuk as nobody would want that other ****,or maybe you would, thought you would know that when i said he never played 😡

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy is Ice lost you again 😆 😆
Tsunki im looking forward to seeing how RDM controls the players now that they have got used to not having AVB around, as I honestly think the players wanted rid of AVB that bad that they would have played for anyone aslong as it wasn’t AVB.

      (Quote)

  39. Ice I knew what you were on about 😉 but tbh I don’t really know that much about LDJ as I haven’t watched much of him, but i’ll trust your judgement 😉

      (Quote)

  40. DAVE aye big al just about said that about AVB as players talk all the time so if he goes to spurs he will get the same probs, think its bloody wrong players running the club like, nolan barton ect did it at toon for a while

      (Quote)

  41. BIGDAVE it will be interesting too see how the Chelski players respond too RDM when he brings his own players in and puts the likes of Lampard and Terry on the bench ala AVB . Thing is RDM is loved by their fans unlike AVB and that makes a diffrence .

      (Quote)

  42. Two questions:

What the fck does Krul have to do to get in this shitty Dutch team?

Also Toonsy, why no match previews and ‘Game on’ threads for England games?

      (Quote)

  43. Axel @206 You may be right, but we are not as technically gifted in respect that few of our players seem comfortable on the ball and we have a tendency to resort to hoofball when panic sets in .We do have some world class players though I would agree, though on paper the Dutch look better imo. Then again if we look at the Greek team you wouldn’t of expected them to get out the group ,but they do well because they work effectivly as a unit ,so I suppose anything is possible. 😉

      (Quote)

  44. Axel I don’t think RDM will have the balls to put them on the bench, he will wan’t to keep them on his side.
As I said earlier players now have far too much power, and RDM knows it’s usually the manager that makes way rather than a couple of players.

Ice as you know I said that all along about Nolan running the show but loads told me I was just saying that because I didn’t like him, and thats why I didn’t want CH as manager, as he didn’t have the balls to stand up to Nolan and Co.
I like a manager to have steel to make hard decisions

      (Quote)

  45. Jesus ever since the final whistle the inquest has begun here in Holland on all the tv channels . They are all speculating on Van Marwijks future and some players have already said on camera that all was not well in the dressing room . Surprise ,surprise . It is now Hollands worst run ever in a finals if you count the lost WC final . Never before have they lost 4 on the bounce .

      (Quote)

  46. Stu I think Krul can’t break into the team because the seniors have too much power.
As for Toonsy I think he is struggling to get articles up with being away on the continent with work 😕

      (Quote)

  47. KIMTOON you hit the nail on the head ,working effectivly as a unit ,Hodgson has us doing that and with a bit of quality in the squad as well . The last England manager that did that was Sir Bobby at Italia 90, Roy knows what he is doing ,he has done it before with Sweden and Switserland .

      (Quote)

  48. Ian Holloways written an interesting piece in the Mirror today regarding the extra money coming into the PL and what should be done with it. Have a read if you get the chance ,he makes some interesting points.

      (Quote)

  49. Dave no ,just read it in the Mirror ,but if you go to Mirrorfootball.co.uk you should be able to find it.

      (Quote)

  50. Toonsy’s working on the continent? Are they short of bus drivers over there or has he taken over from Brendan on Coach Trip? I can see the likeness… 😛

      (Quote)

  51. Dave – just a bit 😯

Ice – I understand that bit and no I wouldn’t want Nigel De Jong in a replica strip. I just don’t get why you directed the comment to me when I hadn’t mentioned De Jong before that point?!
Anyway, who really gives a ****, I’m off to my pit, sleep well all of you 😉
