Simpson set for Reading move?

Premier League new boys Reading look to have won the race to sign Danny Simpson, according to a whole host of media outlets.

Pretty much all of the daily national newspapers are reporting the story, which doesn’t mean much granted, but with this one I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

At the end of the day Simpson is in the last year of his contract and is stalling on signing a new deal with the club. This puts him in a dangerous position regarding his future at the club as they won’t want to let him walk away for nothing which means he is likely to move on over the summer if he doesn’t agree to a deal at St James’ Park.

I think some of the treatment that Simpson has been on the end of has been harsh in fairness. I see quite a lot of people calling him greedy and such, but he’s first choice right back at the club currently and has been since our time in the Championship so does he not have a right to seek a better wage? And let’s be honest, nobody knows what kind of wage he is after or what has been offered by the club.

In terms of his ability I also think he has been hard done by. I don’t think he is the most gifted right-back ever and I know he has his flaws, but he also has his plus points and will work for the team. Obviously there are better players available, but remember we only paid £500,000 for him or something daft like that so I think it’s fair to say that he has exceeded what should have been expected from him.

Besides, this is all paper talk anyway so we’ll just have to see what is going on in the fullness of time. I’m just wondering if the stars are starting to align in our chase for Mathieu Debuchy though? Simpson potentially going, Lille lining up a right back in the form of Jose Bosingwa, Alan Pardew saying he expects a signing within 14 days? You never know…

If it is true and Simpson does go he’ll get a warm reception upon his return from me, and I’d like to hope he’d get the same from the vast majority of fans. Love him, hate him, or somewhere in the middle of the two, it can’t be denied that overall he has done a good job for us through the Championship to securing Premier League survival to helping us get back into Europe.

And that shouldn’t be forgotten whatever happens!

  3. One thing I will say about Simmo is that he played well the other back men… Very rarely did he ever get caught playing a forward onside once the others had stepped up….. It doesn’t sound like much but when you have a ball watching defender it can be disastrous… 😎 oh and then there is those goal line clearances :mrgreen:

  5. Another who did a job when a job needed doing. Best of luck to him if he is indeed leaving.

    I think he has his shortcomings, but he was decent enough at times.

    Hopefully any replacement will be an upgrade.

  6. I thought the deal broke down over how his contract was going to be paid , he wanted it monthly but club wanted to pay him bi-annually ( I think that is the term )

    He is not the best rb in the league but he aint the worst by a long shot. Ill be sad to see him go , and wish him the best of luck with all his future endeavours if he does go.

  7. I’m not gonna lie i’m not his biggest fan i think he doesn’t get stuck in when he should and often backs off too much allowing the winger past.
    I believe he relys on blocking crosses more than anything and doesnt really attack tbh.
    However saying that, we have had no bother with him he always tries his best (even though it may not be good enough) and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

  8. In many years of watching Newcastle they have never really had top, top quality full backs apart from maybe David Craig and John Beresford.
    Simmo has been one of the best and, as said on here, his criticism has been a bit unjustified.
    I stand to be corrected but even if we get Debuchy I don’t think his performances will be that much better to warrant a hefty transfer fee and probably far greater wages than Danny.
    In my opinion he was quite entitled to expect more money than was offered.
    The lad never gave less than 100% and stayed fit and available for selection pretty much throughout his time here.

  13. I could understand him wanting more cash but if the other club coming in for you is Reading and you aren’t the greatest defender, then I would bite the bullet.

    The going rate is what other clubs are prepared to pay for you. Can Reading afford £40k?

  16. Great servant for the club and a shame they couldnt reach an agreement, however, if the price is what SKY is reporting £5M for him then it is great business and bring in Debuchy for a reported £7M. Thats £2M for a international RB!

    Re Simpson I feel if we get Debuchy then it’s definitely an improvement. On the right if Ben isn’t on fire then we don’t offer a lot down that side and no doubting Debuchys attacking ability.

    At the Euros, him and Cabaye were 2 of the best players for the French IMO

  25. Simmo to reading then . Well he did an honest job for us ,not the best but certainly not the worst either ,good luck to him if he goes.
    Well we best get Debuchy now then ,hope SSN is right about that .Also see Hoilett off to Germany to chat to Gladbach ,that makes more sense than QPR . Oh and the Dippers have got Borini by the looks of it too.

  31. Considering we paid 1/20th for him compared to Colo, and considering his wages aren’t even half of our captain I don’t really see how people can call him ***** or greedy, but there we go.

    Personally I thought he was decent, from what many fans say you’d think we conceded down our right in every match, but wasn’t that actually our strongest and the centre our weakest? Okay those stats don’t tell the whole story, but I don’t remember one match where a winger made a fool out of Simmo, unlike say 3/4 of the Prem who went up against Benny…

    Would have been a decent squad player to keep around, we need someone through the doors asap if Simmo leaves as we’ll only have Tavernier as back up.

    Carroll wont be coming back hes not the player we need I dont think especially as it looks as though pards is going to flood the midfield in games we want the ball on the floor and carroll isnt the most technically gifted

  37. Liam-Exactly…and the season would provide a perfect opportunity for him as it would finally give him some good competition yet plenty of matches to prove himself, all he’s really had is Perch and whilst he’s a decent DM and even CB I really don’t see him as a FB.

  52. Reading doing some good business there in my opinion. They got Danny Guthrie for nowt, and will now maybe pick up Danny Simpson on the cheap, two seasoned EPL professionals. ffs Danny Simpson was being touted for England not so long back.

    Not so sure why people are deriding Reading. They have anew mega rich owner apparently, a new stadium, and are a club who are trying to build something. Good luck to them I say, and to Guthrie and Simmo too if he should leave..

    I didn’t get to see any of the Euros so didn’t see Debuchy play at all. From what people say he seems to be a forward thinking full back – a bit like Santon maybe?

    I wonder if that is an indication of how we’ll be playing – width provided by full backs.

    I’ve seen Debuchy play six games (all for France) but I have never seen him play as a full back.

    France played all their games with a back 3.

    When Ben Arfa played he had to provide cover in defence for the missing Debuchy

    When Debuchy does sign expect a transfer request from Ben Arfa.
