No new incomings, maybe – Pardew

Pardew has been let down, like the rest of us.
So I see that Alan Pardew has today said that we might be done in terms of incoming players today.

That isn’t exactly great news is it?

I’ve been keeping my council throughout the window, acutely aware that the club are very capable of throwing the odd curveball when it comes to transfers dealings, which is why I’ve been pretty much silent on the whole transfer window malarkey as I like to form a judgement of the whole window AFTER the event as opposed to flitting between opinions throughout the window and as each day passes.

I’ve known since day one that qualification for the Europa League wouldn’t have a significant effect on our transfer dealings. Put simply, the money doesn’t really justify splashing out sums that deviate from the transfer policy that, until recently, has been lauded by fans of NUFC, fans of other clubs, journalists and ex-professionals alike.

However I have to say that should Alan Pardew’s words of doom turn out to be true (remember the APP – or Anti Pardew Police – are quick to point out the he is a liar) then I’ll be fuming.

First off, let’s hear what Pardew has exactly said:

“We’re watching the market,” Pardew told assorted journalists in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Atromitos tomorrow evening.

He added: “We know the one’s we’re watching. If there’s any movement on them, we may trigger ourselves. But the targets we have seem secure at their clubs.”

Now I’ll be quick to point out that Pardew has said things once or twice that haven’t come about previously.I remember when we weren’t selling Andy Carroll, then BOOM. Much like I remember no new incoming striker last January, until Papiss Cisse rolled into town a few days later.

It’s not over until it’s over if course, but if that is to be it then I feel sorry for Pardew, his coaching staff, and the players. All of them combined last season to propel us to fifth place in the table through a combination of hard work, graft, skill and togetherness.

The reward they’ve been given from the owner and his band of blubbers is shocking. After all that there has been no support whatsoever from above which makes you winder what the point is.

Now I, like the vast majority, am not expecting cash to be splashed here, there and everywhere, but I think we’ve gone to far the other way in this transfer window. If you crunch the numbers you’ll find our net spend is somewhere in the region of £3m, which is better than it has been for a while, but it’s still painfully low.

Still, as mentioned previously, there is time for additions to be made although it must be said that Pardew’s words are resonating about as soundly as a wet fart currently…

  1. So what he seems to be saying is the ones we want aren’t for sale. If they do become available then we will buy they.

  2. I expected more from the transfer window to be honest due to the fact we have more games than last year. I think keeping our players is essential to another successful season and the 4 guys we have brought into the club are no duck eggs so we have a good start. I think we were just hoping for a “Big Signing” of some sort which I believe Anita fits into that category very well. I said this a few weeks back I’d be happy if Anita or Van Der Wiel joins and no more news for us and again I say it I am happy with our signings, I couldn’t dis-agree with anyone about needing more because our defence is looking to thin to depend on Steven Taylor’s injury status so I wouldn’t mind seeing a defender who can fit into the first team join. That being said if we stay as we are I will remain happy, the day we do sell Tiote, Cabaye or Coloccini who are linked with clubs right now before Saturday (I say saturday because it ends friday) this is when you will see my opinions change.

  3. Dont forget Pardews truthful statement more recently

Ben Arfa has a knee injury and no chance of lining up against Spurs lol

  4. Cloaked, coiled, eager manager merely waiting to pounce . . Targets well known, let the game of masters chess continue !

By late Friday , frantic medicals, helicopters on the pad and the usual hot cup of tea for sky sports presenter standing by the gate!

Who will break first. . . . Go on last offer of £3 million for Rooney ! We won’t be held to ransom ! 👿

  5. The transfer window is a terrible time for any fan and as it ticks closer and closer to closing the rumors and tension get worse.

I’ve seen Pard’s comments and i think that people might be getting a little carried away. At no point he’s said that is our business done and dusted. We are still active and like all windows it does on the reaction of others that determine the moves.

I personally don’t see the AC door being closed. Pard’s has said many times that it is not in his hands and that it is being handled at board level. Things move very quickly in football and i think Friday could see a domino effect.

  6. Big telling point on Friday will be the location of David Craig, the northeast reporter from Sky Sports. If he’s outside SJP then there is obviously news to breakdown. If he’s down the road at Scum then it’s an early night!!

I think the biggest boost for us where Benny was concerned was Dechamps getting job in 1st place lol

  8. Shame if we don’t sign anybody else. Debuchy would have been a good signing for us. Carroll would be a good alternative to Cisse and Ba. Douglas would push Taylor for a starting berth. I have no issues with the midfield as it is.
My concerns; Senegal beat Ivory Coast to go to ACON. We only have Shola and Xisco. At any point in the season them two could be injured. We only have Shola and Xisco. Of course we have some youth like Campbell, Sammy and Vuckic, but these cannot be considered serious, 10 game replacements for Cisse and Ba.
Tayor and Coloccini, our first choice pairing for centre half. It picks itself. There is the problem. Taylor is injury prone. I prefer Perch in midfield and Williamson…I’ve seen faster cases of constipation.
Finally, Simpson is out of contract in less than a year. We could head into January with a player who’s negoiated a new deal elsewhere, heads turned, performances drop. Cost us dear. Or we sell him in January for £1m, and are forced to sign a full back for a higher price than possible now.
I dont want major £50m invest, just 2-3, at least one for christ’s sake, quality players in to bolster us.

  9. I don’t think Pards knows too much more than the fans when it comes to the prospects of transfers happening so I wouldn’t worry about what he says.

The plus side of failing to buy is that our reserves might get a chance to break through and get some valuable experience. I would love to see a good crop of youngsters establish themselves as reliable back ups at the very least. At the moment, if anyone gets injured in any position, Taylor, Willo or Perch step in, and the rest of the pack gets shuffled. I’ve said for years we should have a ready made replacement for each position instead of trying to fit square pegs in round holes. Nothing better than youthful exuberance and raw talent to keep seniors on their toes; look at LFC’s Sterling who was busting for a chance.

  10. The fat bastid gambled that we would once again cash in by selling one of our star players. Most likely was Tiote. But up til now that hasn’t happened, and if that should remain the case come friday, then we wont be seeing any new faces, until January.
Its been stated by the fat ****, that the club has to be self financing. Clearly finishing 5th last season has left us broke.
    Hay ho. On we go.
Enjoy europe this season while it lasts, as I cant see us venturing up at the same lofty heights in the PL again this season. Not once our usual injury curse strikes.
    Meh. 😈

  11. As long as we dont sell, i would be happy. We always have the Jan window of needed for a needed cover.

      (Quote)

  12. Why did we not increase the bid for Debuchy 6 weeks ago….. 8m Euros for one of Europes top right backs is NOT a lot of money – and this is the position that Newcastle need to improve in as Danny Simpson is extremely limited going forward and poses little threat to the opposition down the right flank. Whilst i am supportive of the clubs transfer policy – haggling over a mere million Euros is pathetic. Getting Debuchy in now would allow the club to get 2-3 million for Simpson before his contract expires.

Like everyone else, i’d like to see a new centre back to replace Williamson and believe a more determined approach on Douglas would have seen the player labelled the best defender in Holland arrive at Newcastle. Again the mooted 4-5 million Euros isnt mega bucks.

Finally another striker is also required, however, I do not want the club to spend all the transfer kitty and wage bill on Andy Carroll. Let Graeme Carr work his magic and try and sign a couple of young hungry and pacy forwards.

Very disappointing if the club brings nobody through the door now!

      (Quote)

  13. I still maintain that I am confident of a signing before the window closes. Don’t know why but I feel that Pardew reiterating(is that right 😕 ?) that we might not sign anyone, is just a sneaky ploy so that the media arent all over a potential deal which might ruin it.

  15. Finally a little bit of honesty and light on the whole transfer situation.
So Sports Direct as a company have turned a good profit, fat Cashley has climbed into bed with Rangers – oh and I nearly forgot – he’s spend a net £3m on players for NUFC.
conclusion – he still has plenty of personal ambition but zero when it comes to NUFC.
With the comings and going we are about the same numbers wise. Have we improved the quality of the squad – too early to tell. Weve certainly reduced the age and wage bill of the squad.
Can we improve on what we acheived last season – very unlikely. Can we match what we acheived last year – with the extra Euro games – it will be very difficult.
Yet by spending around £15m and bringing in 2-3 more players, I think top 5-6 would have definately been achievable, along with decent cup runs.
So thanks for all the hard work Graham Carr and thanks for all the false promises Cashley, Lambastard and Pardew – who has done a good job as manager but is still their mouth piece.

  16. The thing that’s the most frustrating to me is that we, as fans, are not asking for much. No one is delusionally screaming about how we should have stumped up £35m for Hazard or something. We just want £15 – 20m spent on two or three players in positions of need. When you see Swansea bidding £5m for a midfielder I’ve never heard of, how is £6-7m too much for Debuchy? Or £5m too much for Douglas? The most infuriating thing to me would be if we did bring Carroll back for £12m+. To haggle over a few million here and there with Debuchy and Douglas and then spend that much on a player who played no where near that level last year would be insane. I realize we got £35m for him, but that doesn’t mean that £12m would be a bargain now. He is what he is, the fact that Liverpool paid over the odds doesn’t make him a better player now.

Then there is the whole Douglas fiasco ,I mean wtf. 👿

  23. Posted this on an earlier thread, but thought it worth posting again–New and improved with NUMBERS!

    Hi everybody,
I finished reading “Soccernomics” yesterday and the authors wrote a batch of recommendations for transfers. It seems like Jabba, et al are sticking to these ideas pretty closely, except maybe the one about players with personal problems.

What do you think? I’m quoting here–aside from the numbers, which I have taken the liberty of adding as an immeasurable improvement:

“As a free service to clubs, here ar the twelve main secrets of the transfer market in full:

    1. A new manger wastes money on transfers; don’t let him.

    2. Use the wisdom of crowds.

    3. Stars of recent World Cups or European Championships are overvalued; ignore them.

    4. Certain nationalities are overvalued.

    5. Older players are overvalued.

    6. Center forwards are overvalued; goalkeepers are undervalued.

    7. Gentlemen prefer blonds: identify and abandon “sight-based prejudices.”

    8. The best time to buy a player is when he is in his early twenties.

    9. Sell any player when another club offers more than he is worth.

    10. Replace your best players even before you sell them.

    11. Buy players with personal problems, and then help them deal with their problems.

    12. Help your players relocate.”

I think #3, 5 & 8 are factors in the Debuchy issue. Not that Debuchy’s too old, but 27 is older than they seem to want to go for.

We’ve certainly seen them use rule #9… with our former #9.

I think somebody in the office (Lambiarse and Jabba?) have read this & Moneyball very closely. (Full disclosure: I haven’t read Moneyball, but a good chunk of Soccernomics seems to be a paraphrase of that book, aimed at soccer or “football” as you weirdos insist on calling it.

      (Quote)

  24. What must the likes of Tiote, Colo, Krul, Cabaye and Ba think? Where’s the ambition?

It really is so poor of the club. Which direction are we wanting to go?

Can anyone tell me which clubs have had a worse transfer window than us? Not many, which basically means that the majority of other clubs will be improving so will get closer to us than last season. That means we go down the league as the others go up the league.

Actually it begged belief in fairness.

Poor preparation for this window. Maybe our transfer policy isn’t that super after all and we’ve just been lucky!!!

      (Quote)

  25. A very poor effort this summer by Llambias. Why waste people’s time with ridiculous lowball offers? The Debuchy effort was a farce. Maybe Derek wanted to spend some time in France trying some new wines? A net spend of 3M if that’s what it turns out to be for a top five club??? Whining from Pardew about the transfer window being too long? Come off it, Ashley is still rubbing his hands together after the sale of Carroll and he will do the same if he gets 25 or 30M for Tiote. If this is what every summer window is going to be like for the next few seasons we’ll all go mad. Not surprised but extremely disappointed again this summer.

  27. Spyro – I think mark is wrong and Campbell could be a serious consideration, however if he were to get injured of suspended during those 10 games – or if he wasn’t having a particularly good game – who replaces him?
That’s my concern mate. We should develop Campbell but we shouldn’t be in a position where we could be so heavily dependant on such a young lad.

      (Quote)

  28. Maybe the unfortunate fact that Sagna was injured and Debuchy featured in the Euro pushed his price up out of the range and out of the club would have asked for and over what Jabba & the Slave Girls were willing to bid.

If Sagna wasn’t injured, we might have landed this deal.

  29. our priority is league with out players coming in to strenthen we might as well get knocked out on thursday it would be a blessing as we havent the squad to compete in all comps the youngsters need to be loaned out to get games they are not good enough except 3 maybe 4 mike ashley has done good things at the club got us out of det i for one thank him for that but he doesont wont to take us forword he should sell to some one who would take us to the next level and beyond

  30. Ice – sorry mate, I was on a roll and missed ya post. I think so anyway – but to be honest I was preparing myself for people jumping all over me for adding Pardew to the list, but that’s how I feel about him to be honest. Manchini has got himself in trouble for publicly expressing his disappointment about how they have performed in the window. They have obviously spent abit more than us in recent seasons and won the league last season and he still expects them to kick on and improve. Good manager but another example of him being a puppet

      (Quote)

  31. How can Pardew say the league is the priority and then the club does nothing to strengthen at our weakest positions? Campbell is 17, Ranger is a waste of space as is Xisco and what striker have we brought in? We’re one or two injuries away from disaster at CB and we have only Simpson at RB as Raylor is ok there but not his true position. Obertan has turned out to be hopeless (that’s why we got him for 3M which we consider a lot of money apparently). I’m still not convinced by Marveaux and we have no clear idea what formation we will play. What happens during ACoN? Does Llambias actually talk to Pardew about our real weak areas? Shola is 31 and gets injured every other day and Sammy seems to be a lot like Shola except more frail. I’m lumping together all my frustrations in one post here just to get it off my chest. I think the real battle will be for the 6th, 7th and 8th places in the table and I hope we’re in the thick of it but we don’t seemed prepared for that to me.

I wouldn’t expect Pardew to say we are still interested in Cazza at this late stage in the window.
Liverpool are playing hardball but don’t want to be lumbered with him either. Both are trying to hold out for the best deal.

The Carroll and Torres deal went to the wire.

Is not all mind games at this stage?

I’m not saying that’s the case but it’s a real possibility.

I wouldn’t read too much into Pardews comments tbh.

Anything could happen from now til the window closes. Mind, equally, nowt could happen as well.

    Everyone is just second guessing.

I’m going to hammer them tho if they don’t get anyone! 😆

  35. You may be right Troy. Once the mad scramble begins and dominoes start falling in the final hours, a few things may pop up that they’re waiting to pounce on. They’re playing percentages… high risk, but maybe high reward.

  36. Batty–rule #9 above–Sell any player when another club offers more than he is worth. I just hope they’ve thought through #10 as well:

  37. can see one a least leaving on the last day and same old saying we didont have time to replace him if that is the case i for one would be peed off is there no one out there that can offer ashley the money to sell up and turn the best club in the world into world beaters

      (Quote)

  38. Well, having watched the Pardew mini sound bite on SSN I have to admit it meant ******* all to me.

All managers do this when it comes to transfers I.E. say one thing and do the other. It’s all about throwing clubs/agents/journos off the scent. If I’m at an auction and really want something, I ain’t gona tell the person sat next to me “ooh, Lot 12 is absolutely fantastic, I’m well gona bid for that!”

On the other hand, I am pretty pissed off we’ve done **** all so far, well apart from spending 3m on a replacement (more or less).

However, transfer windows do tend to go to the wire and we have left cash on the table (apparently) with a few clubs. The only problem with last minute deals though, are the selling club has no time to bring in replacements.

I’m hoping that problem ends up being with a selling club other than NUFC come 11pm on Friday. My patience is wearing thin, but I’ll be monitoring this one right down to the wire. It’d be nice to hold onto what we’ve got, squad-wise, but I can’t help feeling we’ll let a big name go right at the death.

I think the reason why so many people are disappointed, is the fact that we’re now in Europe (almost), and have a real chance to improve and move forward with better players to make up the numbers. Yet we’re pretty much standing still in the grand scheme of things.

To summarise, I’ll be amazed, and a bit pissed off at the sheer pig-headedness of Fatty and his merry men, for quibbling over 1 or 2m for our alleged targets if we bring nobody in. I’ll be effing furious though if we end up thinner than we already are and sell a big name at the last minute without enough time to buy a replacement.

      (Quote)

  39. Will we be patting Ashley on the back if he gets 25M for Tiote as many did when he sold Carroll for 35M (after the first shock wore off of course). I would say not. Tiote is the core of the midfield defense and could be a rock for us for years to come. I would feel a lot more confident about the attack if Ba and Cisse had played better together last season and the beginning of this one. Still feel like the back four is almost completely ignored. Does Pardew tell Ashley and Llambias that anyone can be taught to play CB? That’s the feeling I get. No big club would be resting easy with Willo and Perch as the backups for the starting 2. Yet we seem to think that is fine. Get rid of Llambias Ashley and show some backbone man!

Never! I still don’t trust either Stardust or Ashley! 😆

I just feel that everyone is second guessing at the moment and anything can happen over the next couple of days.

I don’t expect Pards to be saying we are still in for Carroll. They want Liverpool to think, *****, we are stuck with Carroll here, we are gonna have to lower the price.

If the window closes and we have only signed Anita then the regime will be criticised and rightly so.

Let’s wait til Saturday morning to fire the bazookas! 😆

Man U – overpaid for RVP which now has turned into like for like with Rooney injury for couple months, Powell(one for future)Kagawa so until Rooney fit added 1 additional player

Arsenal – Podolski-Giroud and Cazorla..but losing RVP and Song in process so in effect 1 new signing.

Spurs..Adebayor, Sigurdsson and Vertonghan..Adebayor there last year ,Modric gone. so again adding 1 player oh while typing Dembele so 2 but still ???? over whether VDV staying

Liverpool simply trying to replace the **** Dalglish left them with.

Everton – Merallies and Pienaar to replace Cahill and Rodwell

As for some of others who have signed a fair few there was already a gap in quality in terms of the quality our squad possessed already

Like someone said earlier quality not quantity

I see a lot of like for like replacements signed but i dont see anyone being lot stronger than last year.

We replace 4 squad players who would hardly have played with 1 imo good signing(Anita) and 3 potentially good young players.

So while we may not have signed as many players as some would have hoped (sorry not signed many with a £ XX million price tag) the squad is still stronger than last year

Maybe we get a surprise before Friday night and get an extra body in if not i still have faith in the squad as it stands to take us forward this year

      (Quote)

  44. Spot on Rodz @49. Yes I feel the same. Our most prized asset to other clubs. Many clubs will be looking closely at Ba and Cisse this season but mostly Cisse. Was he a 1 hit wonder now that clubs know how dangerous he is in the box? I don’t think so but Ba will have to score to take the defense away from Cisse this season. Surely our best bet is to sit Ben Arfa in behind the 2 of them. Very difficult to handle all 3 once they are all on form. Please don’t do anything rash Ashley. We don’t have the players to replace Tiote (too soon to tell about Anita although he looks decent to me already).

      (Quote)

  45. I’d agree the squad is stronger than last year, but mainly because we’ve had players coming back from injury (Marveaux, Saylor, Vuckic), Ben Arfa is back to full fitness and young players are stepping up (Tavernier, Abeid, Ferguson, Campbell). So that’s 7 players we’re better off for this time around. Just unfortunate that I feel Fatty sees this as an excuse not to buy.

    …as I said though, 50odd hours to go yet……….

  46. I suppose it’s easy to say that in hinsight, and fits into the Anti Ashley bashing plan of things, but it’s maybe obvious now why Debuchy didn’t sign for the toon, if Real are sniffing around.. 👿

  48. Yeah G2, I’d hate to think Anita was brought in to replace Tiote. I’d like to think he’s been brought in to work as part of a double pivot with him. They’re pretty different in play from what I’ve seen of Anita. It’s been mentioned before on here that Anita is more of a harrier, just as well with him only being 4ft 6. I think they’ll work brilliantly together anyway if we can hold onto Mr T.

Unless some of the young uns improve dramatically (I’m thinking of players like Vuckic, Abeid, Gosling, and Sammy rather than the even younger ones) we will have to field much stronger sides to get anywhere in other comps while resting most of the first team for the league.

  52. Spyro – surely then if clubs around us haven’t (in your opinion) strengthened, that’s more reason for us to!. The fact is we need quality AND quantity because if you replace 2 players with one and that one gets injured – who do you put in then?. If you do not recognize that we are light at LB, CB and CF then you miles wide of the mark mate. Nobody is saying they want the club to spend £20-30m on one player – in fact most acknowledge that £20m for Carroll would be far too much. Most people did expect the club to spend around £15-20m on strengthening the squad in the areas that Pardew himself has identified. I’m afraid for you to say that the signings we have made has improved the squad is premature and unfounded at this stage as non of our new signings have EPL experience.
If youre happy with what the club have done this window that’s your perogative mate.
But for me, and most on here, the club have shown little to no ambition

  54. i am very disappointed with this window i thought with last seasons great finish then we would push on sign some quality players and possible end our silverware drought but as ever cashleighs to tight and dont understand passion amongst the best the best fans in the country !!! not a happy mag

  55. Sorry GeordieTwo 😉 😉

I feel that to sell Tiote or Timmy would be disastrous. Cabaye for 20 mill would get Ashley’s palms sweating…

The biggest piece of madness will be when our 4 million pound right back Danny Simpson walks away at the end of the season for nowt… 🙁

  56. geordie 2 spot on would it not be a blessing if we didont progress in europe with the players we have it would hinder our league form and risk more injurys

  57. the bottom line is all the best teams only buy 1 or 2 players a season.every 1 has gone mad with players this transfer window and it will backfire.nufc are stable and have the same team.we will get top 6 again this season.we dont have to gel.the team will get better and better. no 1 likes playing toon were so hard to play against.its like building a jigsaw if only anita comes in this window its fine.well get another in jan.it just takes time lads

  58. It’s obvious that Dempsey hasn’t moved to Liverpool because the Andy Carroll situation isn’t cleared up yet. Still a few days to go before the window closes…

  61. Roll on midnight friday and then let the football season begin in earnest , saturday morning we will know where we stand and what we can really expect from our team . Incomings and out goings may or may not happen but i will be pleased when the window slams shut and we can get on with the football . My prediction 1 surprise incoming ,no big name outgoings , but a couple of the younger lads out on loan .

  62. If you look at the fact that Dembele is a 15 million pound man, then no wonder we’re not interested in signing anybody. Crazy money doing the rounds… you also need to take the lads mere pittance of a salary for the next 5 years into the equation to see what it all means… 😯
