Game On! Southampton v Newcastle

Game On at St Mary’s
Game number 13 of our Premier League season will see us travel to St Mary’s Stadium this afternoon where we will face Southampton.

It’s been well documented how poor we’ve been this season so I don’t need to go into that again, but our record against newly promoted clubs isn’t exactly great and with a long absentee list to contend with I’m left wondering if it will get any better this afternoon?

This game will mean that we’ve played all three promoted clubs and so far we have just one point to show for it from our previous games against West Ham (a 1-0 home loss) and Reading (a 2-2 away draw). To me that is not good enough but it also isn’t a trait that has been reserved for this season. Indeed ever since our return to the Premier League we’ve struggled against promoted clubs, under both Chris Hughton and Alan Pardew, with only four wins from 12 games against teams fresh from the Championship.

A win this afternoon could see us climb as high as 8th place in the Premier League table if other results go our way and we find ourselves firing on all cylinders in front of goal. To be honest it’s unlikely given how we’ve performed in recent weeks so rather than looking at where we could end up I’d rather we just get the win at all costs.

My match preview is online here if you haven’t already had a look at it. It features news of injuries for both sides, a history of meetings between the two clubs and some rather alarming statistics from an NUFC perspective.

With this game being moved as a result of our ongoing participation in the Europa League we are not being broadcast live here in the UK. However there are a number of overseas channels who have picked our game for broadcast so, as ever, should you manage to find a stream of decent quality then by all means feel free to share it with fellow NUFC fans who may not be able to make it to the South coast today.

Team news, as you should now expect, will be published below in full as and when it becomes available.

  1. Said Lallana was a great player.

We’ve been **** from Krul to the two up top. Worst Ive seen us play. But I seem to say that every week lately.

  2. Wow we play and tackle like a bunch of faggots…. we lost EVERY SINGLE ball movement before that goal. Freaking ball watching, the WHOLE DAMNED TEAM…. Man I’m pissed….

  3. We had so many chances to tackle and clear that ball before the goalö. Sorry like, but Tiote has been absolutely ***** … hasn’t put a tackle in all day…

  4. I think Krul needs a little time on the bench then he can reflect on the fact that he isn’t an outfield player and practice his kicking and catching

  5. Pardew could be the first manager to win manager of the year and then get sacked the season after. And I’d except it fully, we need someone to get passing play to the team, a pep guardiola type manager even Steve Clarke would do, he’s got WBA playing good football.

  6. **** off man!!
    Absolute bag of ****!!
Turned this **** off, better things to do with a Sunday afternoon than watch these fuckwits then listen to Pardew defend them and himself

  7. Our central midfeld just doesn’t perform, that’s the big issue here. Doesn’t perform with or without the ball.

Surely that gadgey is gonna get a yellow card if that wasn’t a pen ?

  8. I’m guessing we’ll hammer them for 20 minutes until they score on the counter and that’ll be game over for the toon.

What a **** season we’re having. Last season I kept looking down the table and we kept going up. Thus season I keep looking up the table and we’re going down.

    Pardew’s tactics
    Lack of resource investment
    Low player confidence

Whatever is the problem (or combination of problem) something clearly has to change and change fast.

Depressing, I’m actually ALREADY considering not reinvesting in another season ticket next season. It’s only November , WTF!!!!

Breaks my heart to contemplate not showing my support but it ruins my whole week when we lose (especially at home)

Granted we’re away at the minute but the scummers are relegation candidates.

We should be beating them soundly.

  9. can someone explain the Anita substitution ? He’s the only flocker who has done anything in the second half… 🙄

  10. Sorry but this was always going to happen this season. Only Mike Ashley could think a smaller squad will cope better with more games!

Even if we add 2/3 players in January I believe the damage is already done. There is no way we will finish top 8 (Ashley’s ridiculous target) especially with this squad.

Haha, I’m struggling to think of a player who hasn’t been today mate. It is heartbreaking to watch.

We played much better under Joe Kinnear! 😯

  12. IMO we haven’t played as a team all season and that tells me there is something not right at the club, we don’t just go from a good team that are close and will fight for each other to a team like we have seen all the season.
There is something wrong we are not a team anymore

  13. Pardews reason for taking anita off….”we need to keep him fit for wednesday” or some such guff

      (Quote)

  14. Man this could have been 5-0. No movement or inspiration from our two still-standing strikers.

Remember at the beginning of the season when we were laughing that we had so many midfielders ? Well it’s a pity that none of them are any good… 😥

  15. The worrying thing for me is that in the season we got promoted – we were inconsistent, got some shock wins, suffered some shock losses and dropped points when we shouldn’t have. But they were just off days. This isn’t an off day, this is us. The parallels are closer to the relegation season than the promoted season in performance, spirit, work ethic, organisation, everything.

  16. How can this Southampton bloke keep diving and get away with it ? That’s three times now by my reckoning 😯

  17. I am SICK of the site of Jonas! He is ****! Total and utter ****!!

Marveaux has done more in 5 minutes than he has this season,

      (Quote)

  18. Notice how when Marv plays a pass Cisse isn’t offsides as often. Because he sees the pass and plays it straight away, he doesn’t fart around then play a pass when its too late.

  19. Sammy Ameobi will not make it at NUFC. He is garbage. In fact, I will stick my neck out and say NONE of The coaching just doesn’t seem to be there.

  20. This is absolutely diabolical, Pardew really needs to sort this out, we are getting outfought, overun, and outplayed every game here, 442 doesnt work ffs, Ba and Cisse have done nothing all game, and had no service, wingers cant get in the game we are always overun in the middle of the park, why oh why we dont play the same system we did last year is beyond me, this is bollocks

      (Quote)

  21. @The Kid
Problem with Jonas in an attacking sense is that his big asset was always winning freekicks (think he won most in the league 2 years running), so brilliantly handy when we had the tripod Barton – Carroll – Nolan, not much use when we can’t take a half decent free kick

      (Quote)

  22. This bunch of losers wouldn’t even survive in the championship.
Be careful what you wish for.
    relegation could well be terminal.
    This is hopeless

      (Quote)

  23. Look at Steven Taylor for that chance Southampton just had. Once again caught under the ball. Same mistakes every week Idiot.

      (Quote)

  24. Pardew always ‘gets his tactics wrong’ when he has to start mike williamson

Everyone has been saying for about a year that we needed another centre back who could start.

We went into the season with 6 extra Europa league teams and about 16 players in the squad, I don’t think Pardew could have succeeded however good his tactics were
If we’d bought new players and they’d been **** I could understand people attacking him, but we only got one player in summer who looks decent…..

We are fucking **** at the moment though, it reminds me of the post Bobby era when the whole league went ahead of us. We should have beaten Southampton but they spent 25m in the summer we bought a couple of youngsters despite being short for ages….

  25. I feel sorry for those who have driven 300 miles to see that dross. Lambastard should give them their money back.

      (Quote)

  26. If we lose our next two games Pardew will probably be sacked. Injuries and a lack of investment has hurt us, but tactically he hasn’t been good enough.
