Stalemate not good enough for United! West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

Cisse's effort rolls to the line
Cisse’s effort rolls to the line
A much improved performance saw Newcastle United pick up a point at Upton Park after playing out a 0-0 draw at a ground which has been notoriously tricky for visiting teams this term.

Indeed United could have bagged more than just a point had Papiss Cisse’s first-half effort been adjudged to have crossed the line and been awarded as a goal. Rightly or wrongly it wasn’t given and a point had to do in the end.

If you look at our result in isolation a point away at West Ham wasn’t a poor result, but wins for sides above and below us, especially Wigan winning at West Brom, mean that nerves are starting to jangle a bit louder here in the North East.

With Moussa Sissoko missing United lined up in a 4-3-3 formation which did at least show some attacking intent, but it was West Ham who had the first attack although Mohamed Diame’s shot was blasted wildly over the crossbar. United responded and had their own half-chance soon after as Hatem Ben Arfa fired in a free-kick from the wide right which landed on top of the net rather than inside it.

The game ebbed and flowed with neither side really threatening in attack although there was a moment of controversy as Yohan Cabaye played in Papiss Cisse who rolled the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen only to see Winston Reid hook the ball off the line. Cisse was adamant it was over and TV replays proved inconclusive, aside from a replay from one angle which showed that the ball looked to have crossed the line.

Hatem Ben Arfa then had another soon after as he burst into the West Ham box but his tame shot was easily dealt with by the West Ham goalkeeper. United had probably had the better of the first-half but it remained all-square at half-time.

Half-time: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

The second-half started with Andy Carroll nodding a cross from Matt Jarvis wide of the goal before once again United responded as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa rolled the ball to Yohan Cabaye who say his long-range drive fly just wide of Jaaskelainen’s post. Hatem Ben Arfa the curled a frekick into the arms of the West Ham ‘keeper.

The away side had Rob Elliot to thank for keeping the score at 0-0 as he kept out Kevin Nolan with a fine double-save before denying Matt Jarvis with another fine save to his right.

Just two minutes after that though United were handed another chance as Yoan Gouffran advanced forward and knocked the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen who had come out of goal in an attempt to deal with the danger. With space running out Gouffran was forced to shoot from a narrow angle and his effort bobbled just wide of the post.

Both teams pressed at times but neither was able to break the deadlock in what was a match that lacked any real quality. A point gained but it doesn’t feel like it due to results elsewhere.

Full-time: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

It’s now looking like we are going to be the third side relegated and we’ll be joining Reading and QPR in the Championship next season. These are dark times at Newcastle and I can’t see it sending any time soon. Suffice to say I’d buckle your seatbelts as it’s going to be a bumpy few years.

That might be an understatement…

  1. Coloccini was superb yesterday. I was right behind the goal and he really does command the back line. Yanga Mbiwa and Taylor cant play together as they’re both ‘stoppers’. They love to attack the ball, which results in both being out of position from time to time. Coloccini is a calmer defender that would rather play the covering role.

Credit to Pardew for getting the tactics rights yesterday too. Carroll and Nolan were nullified for 90% of the game and West Ham relying on set pieces to win the game. This brings me to West Ham’s tactics, what a shocking side they are. Spent the whole 90mins lumping balls to Carroll and hoping for second balls. They are rubbish and will struggle next season when Carroll leaves.

  2. Munich – don’t get me wrong mate, I think Obertan is a bag of **** and I hope he’s one of the ones to leave in the summer, along with Gosling. But Obertan is like the best of a very bad bunch, and at least he has pace and is a bit of a goal threat. But that’s been the problem with our squad all season – a complete lack of quality in depth.

      (Quote)

  3. THE KID thing is that will be our tactics next season if pards is still here and Carroll is in his team .

  4. Axel
What about Pique, Rossi, I think Mascherano was there at some point(?). So Fergie does make mistakes but by in large your right he doesn’t let go of the good’ins, would still like to we gabby up front though

      (Quote)

  5. SHARPY thats the thing though , is it a complete lack of quality in depth ? since january i think not . The problem is Pardews inability too use the players properly and let them bring their quality into the games . He did a good job last season but this season is being shown up for the tool he really is . I reckon the minute we are safe or relegated he will be sacked , lets face it Ashley can not be a happy man with the shower of **** he has had too watch this season ,the EL run maybe saved Parde’s neck for a while but their is no excusess too be made for the last 2 home games .

  6. if we play at our real level ..i think we can beat QPR and why not arsenal at home… because we can play well i think very well like last season..but pards tactics and management is deteroried this season. and i still think ..sucess last season is the rest of management of chrissy hughton…no doubt about that pards trouble is just justice of football low…

      (Quote)

  7. Axel – aye like I said in my post to Munich, I think he’s ****. Only seen him play well in 1 first team game against Stoke last season when he ripped them apart and provided Ba with a hat trick.
I agree with you though, it would be interesting to see him as a CF. I’m not suggesting he’s close to Henry, but in a similar way Henry started as a very average wide player until Wenger had the foresight to try him as a forward. Now I’m not suggesting we have a Henry on our books, but we could have a better CF than a RW in Obertan.

      (Quote)

  8. Andy – re your 4-3-3 post, totally agree – Anita played in a 3 man midfield at Ajax as well and was their main man in that formation.
I’ve been banging on about it all season and will continue to until Pardew goes back to it long term. It works and if it ain’t broke, don’t try and fix it!.

      (Quote)

  9. Come on lads and lasses without hope and faith we might aswell give up, after all we would all be totally fuked off if the players didn’t show it and they would get hammered for just giving up and rightly so.
But how can we expect them to not give up all hope and lie on their backs and except defeat if we do the same.
We have to stick together and stay behind the team and show some believe until we have secured our future, then we can all do what ever knowing that we have next season to look forward to.

      (Quote)

  10. SHARPY thats my point about pardew not using his players properly ffs the whole of SJP can see he is not a winger but has the pace too scare the **** out of defenders . Why the **** has Pards not seen that and with Ba leaving think lets give it a go ?it beggars belief and that just 1 example of Pardew’s inability too get the best out of his players . Why the **** has Cabaye not been playing where he is most dangerous all season ? The bloke has fecked it up completly and needs to go or our best players will walk .

      (Quote)

  11. Axel – I think Jan saw us sign 3 first team players in MYM, Debuchy and Sissoko and 2 squad players in Haidara and Gouffran and that went a long way to improving our squad. But in terms of quality in depth I think we’re still lacking mate. So much so that I think we still need to look to bring in another 5-6 players in the summer IMO.

      (Quote)

  12. BIG DAVE the thing is for a while it looked like the players where giving up then get shafted twice at home and all of a sudden pardew changes back to a formation the players are comfortable with and we get a draw and deserved a win . I honestly dont blame he players this time their is something seriously wrong in the managers heed and maybe the rest of his staff 2

      (Quote)

  13. Axel – I think he could have and should have given Oba a try out up front but there are nee guarantees with Oba to be fair, and who knows, he may have gave it a go in training or reserve games. Either way, I really think if we stay up we need to really improve our squad in the summer.

      (Quote)

  14. SHARPY your right about a new 5 or 6 players but another squad player that was brought in and hardly used is Bigi . Before january he was getting game time through injuries to others and was looking good but why since january has he not had another game ? Just like Anita sitting watching the **** on the field they must be pissed off . Lets face it Tiote has been **** most of this season when he has not been injured or suspended

      (Quote)

  15. @Sharpy:My point is Cisse is a **** striker simple as.

@Geordi deb: funny how Ba trail blazed 13 goals in half a season with the the same service if not inferior considering Cisse on the other hand, needed sparkling new signings in Jan to match Ba. Go figure! funny how Cisse needs everything to be perfect which we all know conditions that perfect just aint gonna come round often enough to justify him starting.

@Kimtoon: Cisse cannot live on past glories forever. He should be dropped from the side so we can play 11 on 11 instead of 10 on 11 until he scores.

      (Quote)

  16. Never fear lads n lasses… Tomorrow night agent Danny Graham will covertly miss his chances and maybe put in an own goal for the mackems… Well we can hope can’t we… .?

      (Quote)

  17. Personally I would rather see Anita replace Cabaye who on the whole of the season I think has been bollocks. Yes he has had a few goals since he returned but he has gone back to his usual average.

Guffran for Cisse can introduce a bit of pace and can work a bit more to create his own chances and not just expect the ball to be set on a silver plate for him to score. Hold the ball up long enough for any meaningful support to arrive. Perhaps a two man strike force upfront an not just place all our eggs on hoping the FA give us a sleeping linesman who does not notice the only golden plate set Cisse offside goal.

Perch for Tiote who looks a red card waiting to happen.

      (Quote)

  18. Axel – Players like Bigi were brought in as development players to improve and force their way into the 1st team over time. However due to a lack of investment last summer and a number of injuries we had no choice but to play the likes of Bigi and Sammy. Anita is a different story though. For me, Anita hasn’t been given a fair crack of the whip because Pardew can’t bring himself to drop Jonas. I think Anita arrived a bit too light weight for the PL, but Jonas has been that poor this season that Anita should have featured far more than he has.

      (Quote)

  19. Michael – He’s not though mate, he’s just being played in the wrong formation. Instead of replacing Cisse with Gouffran we should be playing him alongside him. Equally instead of replacing Cabaye with Anita, play them together in a 3 man midfield that suits both of their games best.
You need to look at the bigger picture mate. Cisse is an international footballer with a very good scoring record and Cabaye is also an international player who is regularly linked with other clubs. To say they are **** is a bit narrow minded mate, and to say Perch as a first teamer is sheer madness!.

      (Quote)

  20. @Sharpy: Would you start a Bangladeshi striker because he is an international. The tag international does not mean quality unless the team he plays for is also ranked highly.

Players being linked to other clubs is not an international barometer to measure his quality.

What they do on the pitch is how we should judge them and Frankly on this season’s showing that’s all they are living off, their international tags because I have not seen the quality associated with that tag you seem to suggest there is.

      (Quote)

  21. What the **** does Anita have to do to get a game? Pardew would rather play a winger (Jonas) and an out of form one at that and also Tiote who I cannot remember playing well once this year than Anita in centre midfield. Is it any wonder we’re playing ****?

Why does he continue to pick out of form players?

      (Quote)

  22. Michael – if that Bangladeshi striker had a strike rate of a goal in every 2.2 games for club and a goal every other game for country then yeah I’d play him.
I appreciate players should be judged on the pitch, but they need to be played in a formation that suits their game mate. Think about, Pardew went a couple of games playing Cisse on the right of the midfield 3. That’s crazy!. The lad needs support around him and players creating chances for him. The 2nd half of last season he was scoring for fun – he had Ba left of him and Benny right. This season starts and Pardew ***** about with the formation and Cisse stops scoring – surely you can see that the two are linked.

  32. BATTY its just the kid hasnt been given a chance by pardew he would rather play jonas ect,and it took a while to talk the lad into coming to sjp

      (Quote)

  33. I disagree with the Cisse bashing, apart from the offside issue which is inexcusable really, Shola is exactly the same. Cisse has had something like 5-6 goals that nearly all of them would have been given if we had ‘goalref’ technology (which we might do soon). He has been a bit unlucky this season and when he was scoring nearly every game, you can’t be a bad striker and do that, it just doesn’t happen. His hold up play has improved this season as well and he isn’t bad with the ball at his feet apart from decision making which is possibly what lets him down rather than his ability. If you look at Gouffran you can see that this is a hard league to dribble with the ball and get very far by yourself (unless you have the skills of Ben Arfa or Bale) it is a league where the teams have good defensive organisation and there isn’t much time and space with the ball unless you are counter attacking. So really I don’t see the point in criticizing Cisse when he is head and shoulders above our other options. He is not as good an all round striker as Ba, but that’s why he’s gone to Chelsea… We need another striker in the summer (Ameobi’s time is well and trully up in my opinion as well) but it should be to add to Cisse not to replace him.

      (Quote)

  34. Forgot to add.. Cisse puts in a shift every game as well, he starts getting wound up at times and needs to be careful. Ba was usually hard working but even he had the odd off day, especially when the bottom lip went out because he was asked to play out wide, Ameobi is just lazy and most of our midfielders don’t even put in the running and work rate of Cisse. Just thought that was worth mentioning for balance, if your going to talk about all the bad things about Cisse but ignore the good.

      (Quote)

  35. DJG i agree and the striker that should come in is carroll ,his size alone would improve the squad and we could look forward too goals from corners and deadball situations . I reckon Cisse would thrive off Carroll . Under Pardew we play hoof ball so you might as well bring in the best to play it and carroll is the best CF in the premiership for that .

      (Quote)

  36. Axel – I wouldn’t sign Carroll just to fit in to the hoof ball style. But I would sign him so that we may have a chance of scoring from a set piece again. He’s a great target man no doubt about that but I think he offers more than that to be honest mate. However it would heavily depend on how much Lpool would accept for him.

    Kim – 🙄 😆

Sorry, not sure this link works so I’ve copied some of the text. It’s 3 days old now but the article is quite interesting.
In pure footballing terms, in Ashley’s near six years in charge, Newcastle have finished in the top 10 of the Premier League only once, last year’s fifth-place finish. Their average Premier League finish (including their current position of 17th) is 13th, they have been relegated once and are in the middle of another fight to stay out of the Championship. They have not gone beyond the fourth round of either domestic cup competition in that period and in those six years there has been one European campaign, in this season’s Europa League, in which they reached the quarter-finals. There have been six different managers during these six years, including Allardyce.

For the previous six years prior to Ashley’s arrival, Newcastle finished in the top 10 of the Premier League on four occasions, their average finish was eighth and they were never relegated. They reached two FA Cup quarter-finals, one FA Cup semi-final, two League Cup quarter-finals, one Uefa Cup semi-final and one Uefa Cup quarter-final. They qualified for the Champions League twice and reached the second group stage in the competition’s old format. They used four managers during that period.

      (Quote)

  39. SHARPY i agree the lad can play a bit of football as well and he does not just score with his head i can remember him scoring a hat trick 1 with his left foot 1 with his right foot and a header . To be honest because of his injuries i would tempt Liverpool with a player exchange with HBA obviously they would need to pay 15 million plus carroll . I mean HBA must be worth say 35 million and carroll would only be a reserve for them next season . 👿

      (Quote)

  40. As owner of both club and company he has never made clear his intentions with regards to this debt. The figure rose to £140m during Newcastle’s season in the Championship but the latest accounts, released in March, this year show the debt to the owner is now at £129m.
Another interesting quote from the same article. Such a mystery man this Ashley. Why has he really come to our club? He has basically been a failure over the six years and caused us a lot of grief. What was the point. His tat shops were doing fine without us and will continue to do well I’m sure. He’s done nothing but continue to put the club in the headlines for the wrong reasons and repeatedly embarrass the supporters. What is the point for him? Is it just a part of his giant ego trip?

      (Quote)

  41. G2 good read mate and some good points in it,reading it seems like we have been going backwards

      (Quote)

  42. Geordie – I mentioned this the other day mate, the history books may not look great but the reality is that had we beat WBA instead of the 3-3 draw then we would have finished 8th instead of 12th and that article probably would never have been written.

      (Quote)

  43. That’s what I get from it as well ice mate. We’ve had one decent season out of the six Ashley’s been owner. That is very poor indeed. And I worry about that loan to him. When it comes due, if he finally wants rid of the club it may be a real problem. But I’m tired of him dragging us through the dirt, and I’m sick of his tat shop signs all over the ground. And I’m beyond sick of the sight of Llambias’s face.

      (Quote)

  44. I would have to disagree with you on that one Sharpy @129. This season has really put the cherry on top for me mate. How can any owner **** things up this badly in one season? Go from 5th to 16th and in huge danger of relegation. Part of the answer has the name Llambias. And the inability to live with a manager with real quality. Ashley must have a total lack of self confidence if he needs yes men below him. That bodes ill for us. The only thing that would make me change my mind would be if Ashley sacked Llambias and Pardew, put a quality manager in place and stuck with him for several years. I have little or no faith that will happen mate. 😥

      (Quote)

  45. G2 ,Wow ,well it’s there in black and white, scuse the pun ,isn’t it . Not exactly a resounding success as an owner like 🙄 . To counter balance it though there has been a major shift in club riches power since the early days of the prem. It was always Manure and Arsenal with teams like Liverpool ,Everton and Chelsea and ourselves for a couple of years bringing up the rear. Now you have Manureby virtue of their global popularity at the top with Chelsea and City whom no one can seemingly compete with due to their immense wealth 🙄 In truth it makes for a pretty boring title race every year. Years ago I seem to remember any number of teams could have a chance of winning the league not so any more. You only have to look to the end of season Drama yesterday in the fizzy pop ,infinately more entertaining imo .Indeed it seems the real entertainment and Drama in the PL comes with the end of season battle to stay up now 😯 with the exception of last years epic finish for Citeh .But even then who cares about a rich mans plaything who with a team of mega stars should of been out of sight anyway. No the ONLY way we will ever reach the dizzy heights of the prem again is if Ashley sells the club to a mega rich Arab or Oligarch and we buy it ,bit souless but there you go.

      (Quote)

  46. Aye Batty I will have a couple tonight mate. 😆 But I think we need to put the blame where it properly belongs and the article points it out as well. I was going to work out our winning percentage in the Ashley years as well (Prem years only, otherwise the Champs season makes it look far better than it really is). I think Ashley should go back to tat shops, gambling and drinking with his mates and leave the football to someone who knows and cares about it.

      (Quote)

  47. Geordie – how can you disagree?, had we beat WBA we would have finished 8th – that’s fact!. Then records would have shown improvement until this season. “How can any owner **** things up this badly in one season? ” – they fail to invest in the summer. It’s as simple as that mate. Man City have had a poor season by their standard because they didn’t improve their squad properly in the summer either.
Failure to invest in the summer coupled with Pardew trying to be smart with formations and tactics (and it not working) has been our downfall this season mate – for me it’s that simple

      (Quote)

  48. A lot of truth in what you say Kimtoon @133, but I want us competing year after year for top 6 and playing well in cup competitions. That’s not beyond our means. I would be thrilled with another 4th or 5th place in the league, a semi-final in a cup, then a follow up season with another top 8 finish and several decent games in a domestic cup again. I think that’s what most of us think we can achieve. But this bouncing around with an owner who either doesn’t care or just wants more money in his pocket. Dross performances week after week? It shouldn’t be acceptable to any of us to my way of thinking.

      (Quote)

  49. I would refer you to my post 136 with all due respect Sharpy mate. Do you want either Llambias or Pardew at the club now? For me I want them both gone and high quality replacements or we’ll be suffering again next season and who knows how long beyond that?

      (Quote)

  50. Geordietwo imo the club has gone backwards under the Regime and have had to go through some amount of **** during that time. Yet some still look on him as a saviour that saved us fom doom. Most of the **** the club is going through now is down to them .

      (Quote)

  51. Aye Big Dave and I have to say again I’ve been ashamed at our club’s performances in domestic cup competitions over the last few seasons. The dross we’ve been served up on the pitch and then the excuses afterwards! Cup competitions were supposed to be one of Pardew’s strengths after taking West Ham to a final. He and some of the players should be hanging their heads in shame instead. And after last summer’s fiasco by Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dummer what more is there to say?

      (Quote)

  52. Will you still feel the same if we get relegated again this season Sharpy? Two relegations in five seasons? We’re a hairs breadth away from it happening. Maddening. This could have been such a good season for us. Now we’re all gnashing our teeth and pulling our hair out again mate. We should be demanding answers from Ashley. Forget about Pardew. I don’t really care what he has to say at the end of the season it’s what Ashley says and does that counts for us unfortunately.

  54. Geordie – were you happy with them last season? and the season before was one goal away from looking a good season. I’m not trying to be an **** mate but you could look at QPR with Tony Fernandez and Harry Redknapp. Fernandez has sanctioned plenty of transfers this season and ‘Arry is one of the best managers in English football according to some – yet it hasn’t worked for them. In answer to your question mate, I want a chairman who will back his manager in ALL transfer windows, and a manager with tactical nouce who will play his best players in their best positions – I don’t care whether that is Dekka and Pardew or Laurel and bloody Hardy to be perfectly honest with ya mate.

      (Quote)

  55. I was happy last season Sharpy, as were we all. Now I almost can’t believe it actually happened. That sounds like frustration from you about Laurel and Hardy as well mate. My main concern is with our owner and always has been. No real statement of footballing intent. Always evasive or saying nothing at all. His mouthpiece Llambias just isn’t suited to the position. I can’t make head nor tail of many of Pardew’s decisions this season. He was made to look a genius last season by a very good defence and Ba and Cisse’s goals but I think we’re seeing the same thing his other clubs saw from Pardew over the years now. Quick starts fizzling away to nothing. And we’re back to saying that the next season is crucial to restore confidence. How many times are we going to have to say that is my worry?

      (Quote)

  56. where’s wolfie and his dose of optimism??

  57. On the manager front seen the mention of Rene Giraud. Hell man Rene from Allo Allo could do a better job than Pardew.
On the player bashing there are many who cop it on here and many bloggers defend their favourites but could the common denominator not be thatt because we criticise so many we are actually pish

      (Quote)

  58. Actually there are some interesting similarities with Ashley and Fernandez Sharpy now that you point it out. Two billionaires but taking very different approaches with their clubs. The Fernandez method looks like an even bigger disaster now. Over spending, putting the club into huge debt. They brought in some decent players but they look like a bunch of money grubbers like a lot of the Man City players and like we had with Owen and that group of clowns. Still Ashley’s basic weakness for me is his need to have incompetent friends around him in high postitions at the club. Who knows how many of them there are on the board as well. From what I’ve heard he’s filled it with yes men.

TRL the last time I looked the toon were in the cack at the bottom of the league, and were knocked out of the cups without a whimper, so there is really no reason to criticise the players as far as I can see… 😳 😳 I mean at least 4 of them have a relegation from last time on there CV’s and they’ve formed the backbone of the team this season too.

  60. Geordie – it is frustration mate, like I say, that 12th could well have been 8th and last season we were spot on. The time to kick on was last summer. We let fringe players like Best and Guthrie leave and didnt replace them. For arguement sake, had we replaced them with Sissoko and Gouffran and then bought Debuchy instead of pissing on over £1-2m, then we would have been far better placed to replace Ba when he left in Jan. As it was, because of the lack of investment in the summer our squad was so thread bare that our priorities lay else where.
I also think that the way Lambastard handled the Remy transfer was a joke!. I’m not saying we could have forced Remy to sign for us, but to pay for him and his missus to spend a night in a 5 star hotel in the middle of London is hardly selling our great club and city to the lad. His arrogant approach basically placed Remy in QPRs lap.
His goals could well have seen us sitting pretty in mid table.
For me you don’t have to look past last summer to see where it all went wrong mate, and whoever is responsible for transfer negotiations.

  61. Anyway enough of the Ashley bashing for now. I want to read and enjoy all your posts lads and lasses. I hope Mark is right @144. We were on the right track for some of the game yesterday and it looks like Ben Arfa is coming back into form. That has to be a good thing anyway.
