Stalemate not good enough for United! West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

Cisse's effort rolls to the line
Cisse’s effort rolls to the line
A much improved performance saw Newcastle United pick up a point at Upton Park after playing out a 0-0 draw at a ground which has been notoriously tricky for visiting teams this term.

Indeed United could have bagged more than just a point had Papiss Cisse’s first-half effort been adjudged to have crossed the line and been awarded as a goal. Rightly or wrongly it wasn’t given and a point had to do in the end.

If you look at our result in isolation a point away at West Ham wasn’t a poor result, but wins for sides above and below us, especially Wigan winning at West Brom, mean that nerves are starting to jangle a bit louder here in the North East.

With Moussa Sissoko missing United lined up in a 4-3-3 formation which did at least show some attacking intent, but it was West Ham who had the first attack although Mohamed Diame’s shot was blasted wildly over the crossbar. United responded and had their own half-chance soon after as Hatem Ben Arfa fired in a free-kick from the wide right which landed on top of the net rather than inside it.

The game ebbed and flowed with neither side really threatening in attack although there was a moment of controversy as Yohan Cabaye played in Papiss Cisse who rolled the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen only to see Winston Reid hook the ball off the line. Cisse was adamant it was over and TV replays proved inconclusive, aside from a replay from one angle which showed that the ball looked to have crossed the line.

Hatem Ben Arfa then had another soon after as he burst into the West Ham box but his tame shot was easily dealt with by the West Ham goalkeeper. United had probably had the better of the first-half but it remained all-square at half-time.

Half-time: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

The second-half started with Andy Carroll nodding a cross from Matt Jarvis wide of the goal before once again United responded as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa rolled the ball to Yohan Cabaye who say his long-range drive fly just wide of Jaaskelainen’s post. Hatem Ben Arfa the curled a frekick into the arms of the West Ham ‘keeper.

The away side had Rob Elliot to thank for keeping the score at 0-0 as he kept out Kevin Nolan with a fine double-save before denying Matt Jarvis with another fine save to his right.

Just two minutes after that though United were handed another chance as Yoan Gouffran advanced forward and knocked the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen who had come out of goal in an attempt to deal with the danger. With space running out Gouffran was forced to shoot from a narrow angle and his effort bobbled just wide of the post.

Both teams pressed at times but neither was able to break the deadlock in what was a match that lacked any real quality. A point gained but it doesn’t feel like it due to results elsewhere.

Full-time: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

It’s now looking like we are going to be the third side relegated and we’ll be joining Reading and QPR in the Championship next season. These are dark times at Newcastle and I can’t see it sending any time soon. Suffice to say I’d buckle your seatbelts as it’s going to be a bumpy few years.

That might be an understatement…

  1. @GeordieTwo

Ive got a feeling that with Colo back and Barfa starting we can beat QPR. will be tough but most of their player will be negotiating pastures new. And Arsenal are there for the taking in our last home game.. 😯

      (Quote)

  2. I had been thinking the same thing about Remy Sharpy mate. I think he would have scored at least 5 or 6 goals for us and we wouldn’t be in the brown stuff now. I don’t like the way he treated us and went to QPR but have to agree it was handled poorly by Llambias (what a surprise there). Egos were huge last summer. Pardew was busy polishing his manager of the year awards and Llambias was strutting around with his spread sheets full of purples and other delusions of grandeur. 👿

      (Quote)

  3. I can see that happening especially with QPR Mark @151. If we get the 3 points and improve our goal difference by 1 or 2 we should survive.

      (Quote)

  4. Sharpy17, I’m not sure of all of the facts but I’m not sure the fact that Remy chose to go to QPR at the last second all lay at Llambias’s door ?
Whatever it was that caused him to change his mind, it must have been something serious, because the chance of joining up with the French contingent at the Toon must have been a very attractive one, no matter how smooth-talking ‘Arry is…

Anyway, Remy has made a **** of himself anyway by backing the wrong horse. I wouldn’t imagine he would be hanging round to get QPR back into the Premiership ….

I hope to flock he doesn’t put one over on us next weekend 🙁

  5. @Munich Mag

I dont think Remy made a **** of himself m8.

He was given a massive payrise for 5mths, a signing on fee and a free transfer worth 6mil if relegated which im sure he’ll negotiate big wages due to the low signing-on fee.

I think he was offered a deal too good to refuse.

      (Quote)

  6. If Llambias and Pards haven’t had the over-confidence kicked out of them by now they never will. And if Ashley hasn’t been watching closely I would be very surprised because all these poor performances will strongly influence the bottom line. What is the difference in payout between a 5th place finish and a 17th place finish? It must be at least 10 million pounds. That should wake Ashley up.

      (Quote)

  7. Marky@155, then he made a rich **** of himself then mate 🙂

Naah, you’re right, if he got bombarded with so much wedge then he couldn’t turn it down really. He’ll probably end up at Arsenal in the summer, alongside Cabaye.

      (Quote)

  8. @Big dave. me (the butterfly) change my tune?? not sure what youre on about mate.. 😉

but aye, Ive got a positive feeling esp with Colo back. its not all nailed on, theres always twists and turns.

      (Quote)

  9. G2, your first sentence @157 says it all mate. However, a leopard never changes it’s spots.

      (Quote)

  10. @Munich Mag 😛

I think Ashley made a **** of himself but that seems to be the norm with him.I reckon he gets off being a ****.. I would with all his money.. 😆

      (Quote)

  11. I wish those 2 leopards would run into a pride of lions Munich mate. 😆 Pardew looks like a dead man walking to me. I wonder if he’s already been told that he’s being made redundant by Ashley come the summer? I would agree with Mark. There are more twists and turns to come before this is over. Having Colo back makes me feel more confident as well.

      (Quote)

  12. Collo is just fooking immense, even if he has a seriously dodgy beard. I’m really ecstatic to see him back. Maybe this is him really putting his house in order before the will he won’t he bollocks about returning to Argentina starts in the summer. He played like he had never been away…brilliant, with him and a half fit back our confidence levels raise that small bit which may mean the difference between a defeat and a draw.

If the big gypsy Carroll canot get any change out of our defence then he must be really gash. Don’t want us wasting 15 mill on him in the summer.

Marky, don’t let Big Dave scare you off you woozy.. 🙂

      (Quote)

  13. G2, you could be right there about Pardew… he hasn’t acquit himself too well this season. The only thing he did really well was talk the talk, but we know he can do that anyway..

      (Quote)

  14. @Munich Mag 😆

Its ironic Bigdave is actually a 4 ft nowt irish dwarf 😛 i’ll just kick him into touch.. 😛

      (Quote)

  15. If he likes that beard he can keep it Munich mate as long as he helps keep us up. Pardew’s talking has worn me out as well. If he had a sack face he would be Rednapp’s twin. They have both blathered on to nobody’s benefit for far too long.

      (Quote)

  16. I am no Ashley apologist but how can we blame him for this season?

He has been told by Pardew, Carr and Llambias in the summer that the youngsters/reserves would fill in and only Anita was needed – so he only signed that cheque.

He see **** hitting the fan and personally steps in with 5 or 6 signings in the January window. If you ask me, Ashley is the only one who seems to care this season.

It’s the manager, coaching staff, players and Llambias who need a serious look at. Mike Ashley can only sign the cheques and he did that almost twice as much as any other team in January.

He works off the advice of those in the structure – if they give bad info, you get bad results. Can’t blame Ashley for that.

      (Quote)

  17. i’d mate Colo train on his own to avoid risking an injury. I wonder if that oxygen tank Jacko use to use is kicking about somewhere..

      (Quote)

  18. @funkyjesus

do you honestly believe its that simple. Pardew asks and Ashley signs.

What if Pards asked for a host of players but Ashleys tight-fisted approach meant we didnt sign them. I think Pardew puts a brave face on the dealings most of the time.

    I could be wrong tho..

      (Quote)

  19. Mark@169, we should wrap Collo up in cotton wool next to HBA and wheel them out next week in time to batter sloppy chops and his bunch daan Laandan way…

      (Quote)

  20. Mark,

I think it’s somewhere between what I said and what you said. Ashley has a pretty strict finance policy, yeah, but if he feels it is value or needed, he will spend. Llambias actually said in an interview they’d spend £20m or more on a player if they felt he was that good and they’d get more back for him.

The problem is, if Pardew and Llambias really believed the youngsters would cover injuries and rotation, they wouldn’t have asked Ashley for anything at all except Anita.

Ashley can’t fix what he doesn’t know is broken.

      (Quote)

  21. That’s the best defense of Ashley I’ve seen in a long time Funky J @168! It actually makes a lot of sense mate. But now that he has seen what a mess Llambias and Pardew have made of things surely it’s time to step in? And what do we say if he doesn’t? The information needed is all right in front of Ashley now. Just open any newspaper and check the league standings and goal differences.

      (Quote)

  22. FJ@168, I read somewhere, I think it was one of the lads on here who rustled up the figures, but apparently Ashley has a nett spend on players of only 500K since he came to the toon. Not a lot for a multi gazillionaire if you ask me.. I hope he realises just what he is going to lose this season if we go down. He has Pardew and Llambias looking after his multi mill investment. 🙄

      (Quote)

  23. FJ after Pards coming out in the summer and making it clear on several occasions that we needed to and he wanted to strengthen the team, you really believe that he told the Regime that he was happy to run with the squad we had ❓ to me and many others at the time said that Pards was trying to cover them and try to give the squad and younguns a bit of a lift and belief that he had faith in him. No one will ever convince me that Pards didn’t want more strength during the summer 😯

      (Quote)

  24. Munich,

He’s only got that net spend due to the Carroll sale, you take that away and he’s spent more but as you said, still not a lot compared to the likes of Stoke.

    Big Dave,

I have no idea what Pardew thinks. I remember the comments you mentioned but then he said after he was totally happy with the squad after the window and had faith in the youngsters. I think his opinion changes as often as he farts.

      (Quote)

  25. I think you’re spot on there Big Dave @175. I read several times that Pardew felt we needed several players last summer but then got quiet about it when they didn’t come in. It’s that big festering lump in the managing director’s office. His job should be all about good football judgment and communication. Constant interaction with the owner and the manager and honest talk in both directions. Do we actually believe that happens in our club? If Llambias thought we had an excellent squad last summer what was he telling Ashley even if Pardew was telling him we needed more good signings? And how could Llambias actually think we had a high quality, deep squad back then? Because he is incompetent plain and simple.

      (Quote)

  26. FJ I have never seen that quote ” Llambias actually said in an interview they’d spend £20m or more on a player if they felt he was that good and they’d get more back for him”.

But even if he did it still means nowt to me because he added the fact that they’d get more back for him, 99% of people would invest money in anything if the knew they would make money out of it 😕
We shouldn’t be just about making money out of

      (Quote)

  27. FJ @ 176 what did you expect Pards to say ❓ did you really think he would run the Regime down in public because they didn’t get him what he needed and wanted in the transfer window, and this was as I said he made it clear several times that he wanted players.
If that was the case that he thought the team was strong enough why did he not state that until after the window had closed ❓
I believe that the Regime over ruled him and pissed about because they though after getting the 5th spot that they could do it the cheap way and go with what they had.

      (Quote)

  28. Munich – the crack with Remy was that because we have Southern based owners, Ashley or Lambastard basically paid for Remy and his missus to fly over to London, paid for them to spend the night in a 5 star hotel and paid for a night out for them in the West End (of London that is, not the toon 😆 ), then they planned to meet Remy the following day to discuss a deal. At this point I imagine Ashley and Lambastard patting each other on the back thinking – job done.
Only for QPR to sneak in and offer the lad a better deal – wouldnt expect any player to turn that down to be fair, I mean why does Remy have to show us loyalty?.
The fact is that Ashley or Lambastard should have flown out to him or flown him to Newcastle and got the deal signed straight away – then paid for him a night out to celebrate his new move.
It was arrogant and naive and wasn’t the first time.
It boils my **** that we have one of (if not thee) best scouts in the game who finds cracking players for us, only for Lambastard to **** deals up by squabbling on over a couple of million in transfer fees. Name my one other club who have the difficulties we do signing players?.
He did it with De Jong, Douglas and Debuchy in the summer, then ****** the Remy deal up in Jan.
That must do Pardews head in, and whether Pardew stays or we replace him in the summer – Lambastards **** poor ability in the transfer market is a huge problem for us.

      (Quote)

  29. anyway would a £20 mill player to us not usually be a top top player for us and be classed as a trophy signing ❓ as Lambastad has said several times that there would be no more trophy signings 😕

      (Quote)

  30. I would expect a manager to not flip flop his opinion every interview, yeah. He doesn’t need to rant to keep a consistent, honest opinion.

I also cannot find that quote I mentioned earlier now, I am now wondering if I read someone’s interpretation of the interview where Llambias was on about value for money, in which case I am annoyed.

    Either way, Pardew’s a turdburgler.

      (Quote)

  31. Sharpy you better pray that Lambastad doesn’t read what you said as he will make you regret it do you not know how nasty he can be 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  32. FJ @ 183 I honestly have never heard him come of with that one, and yeah we all know Pards isn’t the best manager in the world 😉 but I never had him down as a turdburglar 😆 😆 I had him down as more of a too smooth to move ladies man 😀 😉

      (Quote)

  33. Spot on Sharpy @181. I think we’re getting to the root of the problem. We need to cut out that big festering lump but Ashley has grown attached to it.

      (Quote)

  34. “What we have done is take it up to our figure for next year now, so there will be a slight blip because we’ve brought in more players than we were anticipating. But next year we will be spot on.” “Of course, there are exceptions. If Lionel Messi suddenly said he wanted to live in the North East then we’d say absolutely!”

I think someone has twisted that comment and the value for money thing. Point is they say they’ll spend if they feel it benefits. It’s up to Pardew to argue the point. At least that’s what people said to justify sacking Hughton anyway.

      (Quote)

  35. A turdburglar and a festering lump. No wonder the club have problems! 😆

      (Quote)

  36. FJ at the time I was all for replacing Hooters with a better more experienced manager, but I was surprised to see it being Pards and tbh I don’t really see it as a step up, more a side step. I just believe that we deserve better

      (Quote)

  37. Unless and until the club gets the top management right I don’t think we can progress as a club. That goes right to the very top. Ashley has already wanted away once, can it be long before he does again? Another poor season may finish him with us. That’s where the coming summer’s preparation comes in. If there aren’t changes made I can’t see us finishing in the top 10 or 12 next season. If we get into a run of poor seasons it can start another downward spiral. It’s really all up to Ashley again now. No pressure Mike! 😆

      (Quote)

  38. Funky – whilst I agree with you it may not be Ashley’s fault, I don’t believe that Carr/Pardew and Lambastard went to him and said we were fine.
If that was the case why were we trying to sign Douglas and De Jong and Lambastard flew out to Holland to try and get the deal done. Also we were trying to sign Debuchy in the summer and he missed that one – again through fucking on over £1-2m.

I think it was more likely that Pardew and Carr said the young uns and reserves would HAVE to do coz that dozy twonk ****** all the deals up (both pointing at Lambastard).
Ashley thinks oh well, there’s £20 odd million saved and if the young uns are good enough it’s £20m that wouldn’t need spending – happy times.
If not, then I can look a hero in Jan handing that money over anyway – having made 6 months interest on it – happier times.

      (Quote)

  39. I guess in that position, you’d need someone to step up and argue their cause. If they have an MD like Llambias helping, it should be easier.

I can’t imagine Fergie at Man Utd not getting his signing because it could cost a million more. Needs backbone and ability.

    Pardew can do one.

      (Quote)

  40. FJ you can stand and argue your cause as much as you like but if Jabba won’t give the money and Lambastad is telling him that he doesn’t need to spend then it’s a waste of time, but if you want to see Jabba as the decent one in this then thats your right. but you seem to be doing enough complaining and blaming Pards on things, but who was it that gave Hoots the sack and Pards the job ❓ ❓ ❓ yeah it was the savior Jabba.
And to use Fergie as an example and comparison is well and truly bunkers but if it helps you try to make a point against Pards knock yourself out, but do you think Hooters would have got more out of him 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  41. Dave – I’m only saying it as I see it. Maybe Ashley is behind it all pulling the strings mate. Maybe Lambastard has to run everything passed Ashley, and maybe I’m being unfair on Lamby.
But whoever it is down to mate, I believe that the transfer **** on is root cause of our problems.
As I said at the time of loosing out on signing Debuchy last summer, it’s not like Lille were wanting 5-10m more than what we were prepared to offer. It needs fixing mate, otherwise well continue to miss out on players.
Christ even renewing players contracts since they have came in has proven difficult FFS.

  42. Dont know why we are all getting so worked up actually ,we are not relegated yet and this is NUFC , its not like we are not used too all this **** ,us older ones have been through it all many times before 🙄 Thats what being a supporter of this club is all aboot 😆 😆 i remember the McKeag days and the selling of the likes of Waddle Beardsley and Gazza too name a few standing in the lashing doon rain under the scoreboard . This season is a mere blip . It will all come good in the end 😉

      (Quote)

  43. Are we saying that Ashley is so thick he really didn’t know we’d need strengthening in readiness for the League and Europa and the cups 😯 Bunkem ,course he knew. No him and Lamearse aka Wombat were so busy patting each other on the back after the 5th place finish with what we had that they thought they’d penny pinch and cut corners.

We have been like a ragged arsehole all season and Lamarse is the hemmorrhoid on it. 👿

Massively under-rated in my humble opinion.

I still think Ryan Taylor is mediocre though. Although he’s a good utility player.
