Remy completes Newcastle switch

Remy finally signs on
Remy finally signs on
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Loic Remy from QPR on a season long loan deal.

The French striker arrives at St James’ Park some six months later than originally planned after he opted to join QPR over us in January which is a cause for some concern amongst some of our fans who feel as though we’re second choice.

Personally, if he delivers the goods for us then I don’t really care about what happened in January. The 26-year-old has a lot to prove ahead of the World Cup next summer and plans to break back into the French squad. To do that he must perform for Newcastle first and foremost and if he does than we can sign him up permanently next summer.

Remy scored six goals in 14 appearances for relegated QPR last term which is not too bad considering the situation they were in combined with the fact that the Premier League was new to him. With six months of experience behind him perhaps he could manage an ever better return?

Speaking to the club website Remy admitted that he is delighted to finally be here:

“It will be a huge honour to play for such a big club. I was very flattered by the Club’s interest in me back in January and also very happy that they showed interest in me again this summer,” said Remy.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world and that’s where I want to play. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United.”

He added: “I am focussed on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

United’s director of football, Joe Kinnear, said: “The need for us to strengthen up front was a priority and I have been working very hard to secure one of our targets in this position.

“I’m delighted to have secured Loic for the season. Now we have him I’m sure he’ll be a huge success for us; I know he’s hungry for goals and is absolutely committed to helping us achieve success this season.”

While Alan Pardew added: “Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us. He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals.”

“It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

I’ve seen a few people mention that this is “just a loan deal” but to be fair it’s worth pointing out that Hatem Ben Arfa was just a loan signing before he was signed on a permanent basis so it’s not all bad on that front.

Welcome to Newcastle, Loic.

  1. I’m crying out for Anita and Marv especially, and Vuckic. these are better technically than Tiote, Jonas, Gouff, but yet don’t get a look in

      (Quote)

  2. Big Papa and Sharpy ,Pards clearly has his favourites and what to him is his idea formation ,trouble is he is either too dumb or too arrogant to change it unless forced to.

      (Quote)

  3. The team and formation I’d go with is this:

    ——————- Krul —————–
    Debuchy – Colo – Mapou – Santon
    —- Sissoko – Cabaye – Anita —–
    —————- Ben Arfa —————
    ———- Cisse —— Remy ———-

    Back up 11:

    —————- Elliott —————
    Raylor – Saylor – Willo – Haidara
    —— Bigi — Tiote — Jonas ——
    ————– Marveaux ————–
    ——— Shola —– Gouffran ——-

If we get Gomis or Bent they would replace Shola for me.
Now I agree with Troy that the back up 11 would need strengthening. But as things stand right now that would be 22 of the 25 man squad for me and that’s who I’d have them set up.

  5. Well I still maintain that we would be a far better team with a top quality manager, but I cant see that happening. And I for one would still prefer Pards ove JFK as I said way before JFK came in as DOF

      (Quote)

  6. does anyone know what the is ganning on with Haidara where is he?? nice to have Remy but has had no pre-season hasnt trained for 3 wks and has a calf injury nice start then ffs

  7. Surely leyton orient a few years back showed us how decieving pre season friendlies can be, We went on and got promoted with 102 points.

This time last year we won some decent european Qualifiers and got that bridge trophy thing and then had an abysmal season. Its always nice to win but they more often than not mean ****.

I agree with the comments about Jonas wide left, He doesn’t offer enough going forward any more but totally disagree with going 442 again, We will be outnumbered in midfield again with Cabaye dropping right off to pick up the ball struggling to play through a 5 man midfield and laying of to colo back to krul who ends up hoofing it again.

It has to 433 with Ben Arfa and Remy/Gouffran wide Cisse down the middle and a three man midfield giving us a chance of retaining position.

  8. Ice ,I was wondering the same thing ,odd isn’t it ,cause he was fit again so it makes no sense he hasn’t figured.

  9. CC – I could live with 4-3-3 as well mate. 😉

Dave – I don’t want JFK as manager either mate. But I do wonder whether Poyet or Di Matteo could get more from the players than Pardew has been and that’s not me rating them as top managers. But Keegan wasn’t a top manager when he came to us, he just knew how to get the best out of the players he had – something Pardew doesn’t.

Ice – that’s a good point about Haidara. He’s been going with Dummett at LB during pre season and Haidara hasn’t featured has he?!. Strange coz he looked okay when he did play last season.

  10. One of the funniest things I have read in a long time – goes to show how if you give a fool a voice how they think their opinion is valid:

    STAND UP – TROY STAVERS

You are accused of telling fibs to hide your cluelessness!

“I’ve played more football in the last 2 decades than I did when I was younger. I missed the boat. Albeit, my cape sometimes gets in the way but my hobnail boots don’t half rocket the ball. ”

For the avoidance of doubt I can indeed tell everyone that Troy Stavers has only played 1 competitive game of 11 aside in his life and 2 charity games. In the competitive game I asked him to come along as we were short and there was no one else. I kid you not he stood on the half way line and didn’t have a chuffing clue – he didn’t move more than 10 yards the whole game! And I’m not joking – he never returned after that day.

His football career???!!! Has been 5 aside over the last 20year – played with a bunch of pot bellied porky pigs.

In the words of TS himself – wooooooooo hooooo hoooo hoooo

      (Quote)

  11. May I suggest a new disclaimer for Troy

Can someone please tell me why on earth Pardew thinks this?

I ask again – what is the point?

      (Quote)

  14. CC – agree with you mate. Maybe Gomis will keep Cisse on the bench though. Very impressed with Remy. From what I’ve seen he’s a class act. Pacy, 2 footed can go either side, likes a dribble and is a very deliberate striker. None of this african just hit it as hard as you can. Surprised to see so many headed goals too. Good positioning, anticipation. We were criticised endlessly for bad deliveries last season. Were they bad or was it the lack of movement and anticipation of the so called strikers? Remy goes to meet the ball.

  15. Didn’t catch the match as I was at a gig but the highlights from Ed’s blog don’t look too good for us..other than our keepers were on form! Still, our corners actually looked dangerous for once 😯

And the mighty Shola continues his rich vein of form. If only he had been played in his preferred central role of 4-2-3-1 up front last season he would have scored bundles.

    😀

      (Quote)

  16. From what I’ve seen so far this preseason, we’ve looked a lot more dangerous in the final 3rd with Vuckic on the pitch.

Hope the lad can stay injury free and gets his fair share of pitch time!

  17. It’s all very simple really. We had a **** squad at the end of last season. We’ve lost 3 players and gained one.

Oh dear. Football is an easy game. 🙄

So many people try to complicate it. 😉

      (Quote)

  18. Stu – did Pardew say that?. A question that should be asked of MA if true!.
But to be fair – a net spend of around £15m last summer, Jan and this summer so far suggests we will not be one of the big spenders.
That said, the players brought in with that £15m haven’t been too shabby either like.

Georgio – agree about Remy. Hopefully he keeps his nose clean and concentrates on playing footy.

      (Quote)

  19. @Sharpster

The players brought in at January certainly didn’t improve the football or results.

  25. Troy – it was also alot to ask for them to hit the ground running and make such a huge impact. I know you disagree but the formation didn’t help them either. Both Sissoko and Gouffran were played out of position IMO.
MYM needed time but looked solid at LB when asked to play there and I see him being a big player for us if Pardew has the balls to put him in ahead of Taylor.
Gouffran has done well through the middle as a CF during pre season though.
Debuchy looks good going forward but struggled with the speed of attack from opponents in the PL.

No doubt we need at least 2-3 more in this window and then continue to strengthen or replace in Jan and each window thereafter

  28. Kim, I’m really angry with Ashley this transfer window. He has recouped 40 million this season and that will go towards the clubs debt. However I think he will still sale the club for 267 million and make a 110 million pound profit from his intrest free loan ? I don’t think Pardew will get sacked as long as Ashley is here. Ashley know’s how to make a profit

What bothers me is him wanting to keep an 10% interest in the club when he sells up as I don’t think that will appeal to many potential suitors ,I know if I was buying it I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the club.;)

  38. kim, I don’t get Ashley. I do find the financial side intresting. I think 3 years down the line we will be debt free. Owe him nothing and be in good shape. The sad part is, he walks away with a profit but then we are safe financially for years to come. I honestly believe we can stay safe in the league, even with Pardew at the relm.

      (Quote)

  39. Stem ,I wasn’t too impressed with Pards last season, I know we had injuries and a thin squad but he played far too much on the back foot for me. We were inviting pressure from the get go week in week out ,he seems to set out not to concede when he needs to put the emphasis on attack imo. We were getting turned over in our own back yard by the scum ffs ,that CANNOT happen again . Now he has the likes of Remy (pace and good end product) there is no reason 2 up top can’t work and we might just score a few goals. But looking how we are set up pre season when he can afford to gamble formation wise I can’t see us being much more entertaining.

      (Quote)

  40. Kim some things have changed over the summer, most things in fact and Pardew is still a **** manager. He proves it every game.

      (Quote)

  44. Latest from Pardew about the Rangers game: “The pitch was a bit long for our liking.” You’ve got to be joking Alan. Doesn’t the other team play on the same pitch? I mean it’s getting to the point where Pardew should be considering a career in comedy. His other comments at least made a bit more sense but still the performance wasn’t there against a poor side.

      (Quote)

  45. I don’t think most peoples’ attitude has changed much about Pardew Mark @346. It’s just the ridiculous comments and the continuing poor play that has a lot of us worried. Yes it is only pre-season but teams are allowed to produce good performances in pre-season. I want to see the team play a few matches before saying anything more about Pardew but this does follow his usual pattern over the years mate. One decent season followed by collapse. I don’t understand it but I hope it turns around quickly for him. Time is running out I’m afraid and playing Man City first won’t help matters.

      (Quote)

  46. “In particular, Liverpool and Spurs have spent a lot of money, and other clubs such as Swansea and Southampton have coordinated their financial strength really well.” “You look at a club like Southampton, and they’re in a much stronger financial position than us in terms of purchasing players.”
Here’s another quote from Pardew. What on earth does he mean when he says Southampton are in a much stronger financial position than us? That can’t possibly be true can it? Their ground is much smaller and their earnings must be smaller. Is he just having a dig at Ashley? Again I just don’t understand him and half of what he says seems to always be bollocks.

      (Quote)

  47. Those of us who would like Pardew to go are not basing it on a few preseason games. I for one have been looking for a change in his approach. Do I detect any? No! Hope I am wrong but I think we are in for more of the same as last season. Surely, given preseason games are not important there is a chance to try something different I don’t think he has the courage even for friendlies.

      (Quote)

  48. It seems to me that what Pardew is already doing is preparing us for a mid table finish. Making excuses already Alan? How much more ridiculous can the man get? We have no European football this season and a very decent squad on paper. Now let’s see some decent football Pardew.

      (Quote)

  49. Well said Groucho @353. I feel the same way. Working on fitness and bringing in a new fitness coach is excellent. The players have been worked hard in training as well. Shouldn’t they always have been worked hard in training? It’s easy to criticize but we have waited a long time now to see improvement. Through a horrendous season full of excuses while other sides such as Swansea were performing well and entertaining their supporters (and winning silverware) without a host of excuses about too many games. Now we need to see the same type of performances.

      (Quote)

  50. It will be interesting to see how Swansea do this year that’s for sure.

Groucho@353 ,Yes that was my point at 344 ,It’s in pre season when you have the luxury of jigging formations to find a winning formula ,that he hasn’t speaks volumes imo. I do really want him to do well ,it shouldn’t be too hard with the talent at his disposal and no European footie to distract us. It does concern me however that should we finish say 5th or win a cup (fat chance) that another season in Europe would see us struggle again.

      (Quote)

  51. It’s no attitude to run a club with Kimtoon. What Pardew is saying is that success is a bad thing because it brings more games. No other manager would come out and say something like that. The word ambition isn’t even in Pardew’s dictionary it seems. My patience with him was used up long ago. These recent statements just continue the long list of lame excuses from him.

      (Quote)

  52. Thank god we know why we performed poorly against Rangers. The pitch was too long. Well now all we have to do is only play against teams with short pitches. Simples eh Pards? No wonder this man is considered a great manager (by himself and Ashley but who else)? I’m so impressed that Alan is bursting with enthusiasm and full of ambition to start the season. Let’s see, we can’t finish in the top 5 or 6 and 7th to 10th doesn’t look good because there are so many other more wealthy teams in the Prem now. So about 12th should be possible should it Alan? But don’t hold him to it because some teams have pitches that are too long. 😆

That’s contrary to many on here who say we are stronger now. 😯

  57. I don’t know how you feel M @361 but I have strong doubts about us finishing above Swansea and West Brom. I see us finishing somewhere around 11th if Pardew can manage to inspire the players at all. If we replace the manager who knows? The 48 points is certainly uninspiring though with the starting 11 we have. On other blogs I’ve heard that Ben Arfa looked out of shape against Rangers. I hope it isn’t true. I think he made a fairly bad mistake on the play that lead to the goal as well and is it true Colo already has a groin injury?

      (Quote)

  58. I think a lot will depend upon stability this year. The core of the starting 11 is much the same as the team that finished 5th with 19 wins and 56 pts. Last year we were horrendous with fitness and injury issues, extra games etc leading to only 11 wins and 41 points. This season I can see that Remy for Ba gives us a better balance and with Sissoko etc pushing for places we have a stronger squad. The prediction of 46 pts would have been achieved last season if Cisse’s goals had counted so I fully expect to be over 50pts. In terms of places that should yield 8th, but I’ doubt that the 60+ points needed for 5-7th area let alone the 75 needed for champions league. No can’t see that. settle for 50+ pts and 8th.

  59. well i was fed up with gomis **** so thought i would spend a couple of hours digging into it with french papers ect,imo this is what is going on just my thoughts so dont pin me down on it,OM are holding up the deal yes, why a lot of talk that the mafia are involed on the edge of the club gomis agent will get a big pay off from them when they sign him for free in jan instead of paying 8miil euros now, gomis cannot sack his agent as some fans might say as he has a contract with him, to break it would cost him a arm and leg for the rest off that contract which is earnings related, agent would get around 800,000 if toon agree,so pay off from OM must be a lot more,of coarse i could be quite wrong but thats what ime getting putting two and two together, could be making five like

      (Quote)

  60. I hope you’re right Premand but I see stability as unlikely this season. Pardew is just too full of desire to make excuses and try to bring the supporters’ ambitions for the club down into mid table or lower. He just isn’t getting the type of performances that should be expected out of the players he has. If the owner won’t make the switch to a far better manager with European experience then he is wasting his time as far as I can tell. For me even 8th shouldn’t be acceptable. We should be aiming for sixth with this side and maybe even surprise one of the normal top 5 as we did 2 seasons ago.

      (Quote)

  61. Sounds like reasonable speculation icedog mate @371. Something dodgy does seem to be going on there. It’s ridiculous how much power agents have now. They should be taken down several pegs for the good of the game. But I’m cynical about it. Nothing will happen and the agent weasels will continue to get rich. 👿
