Game On! Newcastle v Fulham

Game On at St James' Park!
Game On at St James’ Park!
Good afternoon all and welcome to our ‘Game On’ match article which will take us through every twist and turn of the Fulham game this afternoon.

It’s another home league game following on from the 0-0 draw against West Ham last weekend so we really should be looking to win this one.

It’s going to be tough though. We’re in a rut at the moment and Fulham are a good side who do well against us generally. In fact here’s a stat for you. Fulham have won more Premier League games against us than they have against any other current Premier League side. Not exactly good reading but it’s up to us to break that stat though and we have the tools to do so. It’s just a matter of realising how to best utilise those tools and get them to click.

The game itself will not be shown live here in the UK as it’s a Saturday, 3pm kick-off however there are lots of overseas TV channels which are broadcasting the game so the chance of watching it online are pretty decent. Same again, if you find a decent stream then please feel free to share it by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will be added in at the bottom of this article, in full, as soon as we can get it published. One note of late team news however is that Time Krul might miss the game after struggling with a groin problem but I guess we’ll soon find out.

And that’s that. Now we need to register our first league win of the season.

Howay the lads!

Newcastle: Tim Krul; Mathieu Debuchy, Fabricio Coloccini, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Davide Santon; Hatem Ben Arfa, Vurnon Anita, Moussa Sissoko, Sylvain Marveaux; Shola Ameobi, Papiss Cisse

Fulham: David Stockdale; Sascha Riether, Brede Hangeland, Aaron Hughes, John Arne Riise; Alexander Kacaniklic, Steve Sidwell, Scott Parker, Bryan Ruiz; Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Bent

Subs: Neil Etheridge, Giorgos Karagounis, Damien Duff, Matthew Briggs, Adel Taarabt, Huga Rodallega, Derek Boateng

  1. Agree with Kimtoon @ 365. Probably a bundle will arrive on Monday. Come on JFK! Don’t disappoint us.

  2. Kim-sounds about right 😕 really wanted Cabs sold to get some players over the line, I think we’d buy if we actually sold but obviously can’t be sure. Honestly, I think we missed Anita and his tempo when he went off. Cabaye was ok-but he can’t get past a man for toffee and it’s telling his initial contributions were a dangerous foul and then picking the ball up from CBs and hoofing it-we don’t need anyone to do that, we have a great CB passing pairing ffs!

  3. I can’t see Saylor getting back in the side with Mbiwa and Colo playing very well together. Too many rash tackles and fouls from Saylor. We need another quality CB for when Colo leaves.

  4. 25 shots on goal to 3. Well at least we’re shooting more than last year…can it be from closer than 25 yards now? 😆

  5. Kim @365,

That’s exactly my thinking 😀 I think two players (striker/winger) and we have a squad to challenge the top 7.

I just hope Pards learns from the last 30 mins and it encourages him to be more positive in future games. Not banking on it though.

  6. The last half hour was a **** performance……

**** compared to how good we could actually be. We have the players to challenge Liverpool, Arsenal & Spurs.

Against teams like Fulham & WHU we should be dominating from the start with wave after wave of attacks.

We’re all happy today but we should have played like that ALL game every game.

  7. Taylor, Jonas and Tiote should fight for their places, not the first names on team sheet when they are available. Jot this on your notepad Pardew.

Lets pray that Remy wasn’t found guilty for the rape charge.

  8. G2/Pup-agreed. They didn’t have loads to deal with but mapou absolutely bossed it, colo was cool as a cucumber and both sparked off counter attacks. Shut the door on your way out Stevie 😉

  9. Aye newkie ya not wrong but he’s a decent back up saylor and were going to need him

If remy gets injured were screwed as cisse is the new Torres and shola is ****

      (Quote)

  10. Lets hope this result hasn’t bought Pardew extra time.

Surely nobody has already changed their mind and wants to ‘give him a chance’?

      (Quote)

  11. I thought Shola had a few good moments of play in the first half.
    .
He needs to join a team where he’ll get regular games. His style just doesn’t fit the kind of football we want to see.

  12. We need more consistent play throughout the game. The passing really picked up in the second half and we actually pressed Fulham in their own end. This 11 should keep starting. No Jonas Pardew please. Not sure what will happen with Cabaye but if he plays well and doesn’t unsettle the team then he can definitely be a positive for us. This should help the squad with confidence. We have Aston Villa away in 2 weeks. A new face or two would help but don’t go completely defensive Pardew or our confidence will fall again.

  13. Spot on KK @388. He should have left us last season. He could be very decent in Championship football for a year or two. We can’t afford the luxury of keeping him anymore.

      (Quote)

  14. Great win

    1. Ben Arfa is amazing and is easily todays motm

    2. Remy looked class and totally changed the game for us.

    3. How bad did we look in the first half. No movement off the ball what so ever. We are relying on Ben Arfa to beat two men to even create a chance.

    4. Pardew got his subs spot on today (A broken clock is right once a day :D)

    5. 3 Clean sheets in a row is pretty impressive. (todays defense is our best defense imo)

    6. Cisse looked shocking all game yet again.

      (Quote)

  15. The biggest pity is that we have a two week break now, just when we get a result and have a chance to build on it 🙄 .On the plus side IF we can get a player or two in ,it gives us the chance to get them working together over the next week or so unless they are internationals away that is.

      (Quote)

  16. Marv – I didn’t think influenced the game today. He just isn’t a winger and needs to play centrally where he can really hurt teams.

Anita – was decent but he could be incredible if other players start moving off the ball. His passes are quick (sometimes without a touch) & precise; just what we need to turn defence into attack or thread a ball through in the final 3rd.

Sissoko – A couple of times today he made some epic runs, sometimes getting on a ball that i thought was lost. He is perfect if we play counter attacking football and if he improves his dribbling he would be unstoppable.

      (Quote)

  17. Not if it is a 24 hour clock Chubby 😛

But heh good news for us then Pards will have another masterstroke in 12 hours 😛

    A signing perhaps lol 😀

      (Quote)

  18. Cisse can’t lead the attack. He needs a more rounded striker to partner him (Remy?). Somebody who can draw attention away from him so that when the ball falls to Cisse he can bang it in.

That’s why he scored bucket loads when Demba was here.

      (Quote)

  19. I just don’t know how Cisse can continue to keep his place. He had one decent chance but nowhere near enough from him. He should take shooting lessons from Ben Arfa. His balloon shot is getting very tiring to watch.

      (Quote)

  20. Cisse can continue to keep his place because we haven’t had anyone to really be able to replace him.

The real problem is he’s a one dimensional striker and we’re not playing in a way that makes the best use of him

      (Quote)

  21. it was good to see Barfa finish the game, hes normally off before 70mins. He was played in a good position towards the end..

      (Quote)

  22. Was nice havin marv on instead of Jonas

Yeah I think he will improve but I wouldn’t mind toon putting a cheeky bid in for defoe

      (Quote)

  23. bennys mint

It was a good goal. I was trying all second half to score because we needed the win today. I was trying a lot of shots. I’m not sure how but I just hit it and I scored so I’m very happy.

“If we didn’t score today we wouldn’t have been able to sleep tonight. We’ve been trying and trying, and today we finally got the goal.

“We’re very happy today. If we hadn’t won or scored today we would have had two very bad weeks.”

      (Quote)

  24. We had better hope Cisse improves with Remy beside him. He can’t just expect to get tap ins. What has happened to his shooting from 18-25 yards? He was class with those type of shots early on from in and around the edge of the box but it has completely disappeared from his game. How many shots has he ballooned over the net in his last 20 games or more for us? I don’t understand it.

      (Quote)

  25. the thing with Cisse is a bit of confidence. We havent been creating many chances for him so understandably his head may drop. Once Remy came on we attacked freely resulting in a decent header from Cisse. He has been awful like but if we play like we did in the last 30 mins he’ll get more chances to convert.

      (Quote)

  26. Hope you’re right Mark and KK. He can’t get much worse. I realize he’s had little service recently but I can remember a large number of balloon shots. Far too many, Even the penalty he was given last season was over the net. He needs to calm down and shoot with proper form. What he’s doing isn’t working, clearly. We can’t wait forever for him to improve and if we can’t get him the ball for clear runs on net then he’s almost useless to us. I’m very uncertain about his future with us.

  27. Picture the scene, it is 1886 in a small town in the wild west of America. A local town is under siege by bandits from outside and corruption from within. The fat mayor sits in his office with his feet on his desk, chuckling to himself at the fate that has befallen the townfolk. He twiddles his thumbs and does nothing. The grey haired sheriff who has been told reinforcements are on their way, struggles on. Unable to tactically outmanouvre the enemy, he is finally captured and is hanging with a noose around his neck. The end is near, all seems lost. Attempt after attempt by his men to set him free from this almost certain fate fail again and again and again. When lo and behold! A young french man rides up one final time and fires a single bullet piercing the rope and setting the sheriff free! The bandits flee at this stroke of brilliance and skill and the day is saved! Hurrah!

  28. “I think Joe has got the targets in front of him and it is who he gets across the line, it not easy bringing in offensive players as Arsenal and Spurs have proved, it takes a lot of money and we are in the same boat.”
Alan loves to cover his ****. He’s saying he would like a good attacking player in but the owner has no money. Poor Mike. I feel for him. Not.

      (Quote)

  29. Yes it’s all bollocks Kid @426. We have the money but the owner is clueless. How about paying the club for all the SD advertising Mike? That’s how Man City pump money into their club. But we have a tightwad with no football brain whatsoever.

      (Quote)

  30. These clowns make me laugh. They sign a deal with Wonga and say it will help us sign a player. It comes to the window and all we have to our name is a loan and the potential of signing ONE player. They really do think we are stupid, don’t they?

Where’s the £60million TV money, Mike?

    Vote with your feet.

      (Quote)

  31. Geordietwo

I don’t think the problem is a lack of a footballing brain. I think it’s more to do with taking more and more money out of the club year on year.

      (Quote)

  32. Notice how closely we’re sticking to the 20M pound per year expenditure limit with Mike? We spent 18 or 19M in January and now 2M for the whole summer. Very clever Mike but it won’t work anymore with the TV money coming in. You’ll be quickly left behind Ashley and we’ll be a bottom 10 team again.

      (Quote)

  33. Yes a bit of both Kid or he wouldn’t have hired Pardew and signed him to an 8 year contract, and he definitely wouldn’t have hired Kinnear again.

      (Quote)

  34. Have to say I thought Fletcher was a poor signing for the scum at 10 mil but he’s been immense for them. Saved their bacon last season. Still, at least they lost mig

      (Quote)

  35. We have replacements in mind, but whether we can get one of those over the line if Cabaye goes late, I’m not sure.

“It’s something we’ve warned his agents about, that the deal won’t happen if they leave it too late, and I think that’s fair.”

i like Alans fighting talk, lets see if mike thinks the same come Mon neet 😀

      (Quote)

  36. I don’t think anyone will offer enough for Cabaye Mark but let’s wait and see mate. Only 2 more days of this agony left and then we can concentrate on the football. The Gomis situation for us might be similar. If his club gets too greedy he won’t be leaving.

      (Quote)

  37. You know there’s something that came out of today and that is that we can STILL entertain albeit for 25 minutes second half. We see now that when we play on the front foot we can dominate. This is food for thought as if no newbies arrive to further that end then the groundswell of discontent will be even worse than before because now we have seen that with just the addition of Remy it makes so much difference. We could be so good with another couple of astute signings ,maybe even give Pards the belief that he can play a more attacking game without fear who knows. Today we were the child getting in the biscuit tin for a treat ,don’t let us go back to the tin and find only crumbs please mr Ashley.

      (Quote)

  38. Kim some would have you believe we have bad players 😛 Though what i fear might happen with Remy is he starts very well and eventually gets coached into a 1 dimensional type player that cares about nothing but the shape of the team.

How many times have we seen the above happen under Pardew.

      (Quote)

  39. So many excellent contributors on here. I really enjoy reading all your comments. Much higher quality than many of the other blogs. Just thought I’d mention it again. Again spot on Kimtoon @439. That’s how our owner should be thinking but I have my doubts. 😥

  40. The kid Thauvin is not in the squad for Lille today. Is he on strike or something? Or (pure speculation alert) could it mean something… more!?!?

      (Quote)

  41. FSOTC

He is on his way to Marseille, mate. He wants to go there and Lille have buckled, it would seem. Shame, as he’s an exciting prospect.

      (Quote)

  42. Santii-out of interest, which players are those you mention ❓

I would say Jonas is the one most pointed to, but his decline as an attacking force started well before Pardew got to him, he was poor even in the CC apart from winning Fks. I like/liked him but the trouble is, he’s only gotten worse offensively.

      (Quote)

  43. Scum 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

Santi , The problem is not so much poor players of which we do have a few to be fair ,more the system we play I think and that is down to Pards . If he can’t see that us pushing up more isn’t the better way then I truly despair mate.

G2 ,yeah lot’s of good contributors on here I agree , yourself included.
