Will the axe fall?

After much gnashing of teeth and shaking of heads the dust is slowly starting to settle after the transfer windows closure.

A man under pressure!
A man under pressure!

That is not to say that the anger and resentment is still not bubbling away amongst fans as they try and fathom what transpired on deadline day. There is no doubt that there were multiple parties involved with the dealings that went down but one man seems to be taking the brunt of the blame and that man is Alan Pardew. How much say he had in the Ben Arfa & Mbiwa deals is anybody’s guess but that seems not to matter as the heat builds on our silver haired supremo. Defensively we have been a shambles and to loan out and not replace a defender is fraught with trouble and I can’t help but feel that we will suffer the consequences of this gamble. The mountain for Pardew to climb to win back support from the fans almost seems insurmountable when you couple this with the departure of Ben Arfa. In the past Pardew has not been fully supported in the market place by the board/regime and has had to make do with what he has been given. Last season was particularly bad when you consider what he had to work with. However this season, he has seen new players come through the door and it could be said that he is building a squad with the players that he wants. To me this is going to put added pressure on Pardew and the board/regime will want to see some results from the investment made. We fans will also want to see some improvement from a footballing perspective but to date it looks like we are still a work in progress (to put it very nicely).  No one is expecting the new players to hit the ground running and time will be given for them to customize themselves with the pace of the premier league. I guess the big question is how much patience will the fans and the regime allow before Pardew’s position as manager becomes untenable . There is popular belief amongst a lot of fans that Pardew is safe no matter what happens. This could be true and only time will tell.

For the record, I don’t hate or dislike Alan Pardew and if we were playing some good football and moving in the right direction I would be happy for him to stay. Personally I think he has run his race and has nothing more to give to the team. I am not knocking his commitment and his work ethic as I think he tries as hard as possible. I just don’t think he has any tricks left up his sleeve and his time as Newcastle Manager has run it’s course.

What are your thoughts?

  1. What’s the latest on De Jong? Any reliable info on this 4-month claim?

(If it’s true then my hopes for this season will go from ‘not great’ to ‘oh ****’)

  2. Should be ok though. According to the clueless crew, we have a stronger squad than last season. 😛

  3. Don’t worry boys. We coped perfectly well when Remy got injured.

    Oh. Maybe not. 😛

Got to love The Clueless Crew 😛

Im starting to think Santon could return in starting line up when fit. Abeid should be an option as midfielder ahead of Anita

Don’t be silly. There are clearly true stories that can be attributed to a qualified source and there is potential rubbish with no quoted source.

How did they get this information and why haven’t the likes of BBC Sport or Sky Sports reported it?

  6. So we’re looking at either a miraculous return to form from Cisse or Armstrong being the next Rooneh.
    Brilliant.

  7. Well, well well. NUFC confirmed he got injured and likely to be out for a number of months! Who would have thought that!

  8. Siem de Jong sustained an injury to his right thigh in training earlier this week and is to be assessed further at the start of next week.

Initial indications are that he is likely to be out for a number of months.

Would that work? A big ask of Armstrong, but his tail’s up at the moment and he knows how to hit the target. He’ll get good service from all the other front 6; I’d fancy him to score.

  12. Now that de Jong is injured big time, AP has no other option that show courage, spirit, and have faith in some of young guns, Aarons, Abeid, Bigi, Good, Armstrong, Satka, Ayoze, Sameobi all need a shot a some point, Id rather have Sameobi on a wing that Gouffran at the moment, he’s 6 ft 4 1⁄2 in, he got pace, skills, and can win headers when/if we hoof it, he could be very very useful, as we’re defo crying for a Target Man!

  13. Look on the positive side lads, come January Jabba won’t have to buy a forward as De Jong will be like ‘ a new signing ‘ 😉

  14. ****. Trust me to pick the story that actually ends up being confirmed! Loads of examples like this before that have ended up being rot.

Let’s hope the “initial indications” are wrong and the scan shows something better next week. Looks like December though…******.

If Stuart can confirm those players being out, then i can’t imagine any fist pumping going on against the Saints.

It’s a ready made excuse for Al tho.

  18. And yes…it does expose an issue in that position…scoring goals…we all hoped SDJ would step up to the plate…so the question is…who will instead?

      (Quote)

  19. TDS – Nobody will step up because they’re not good enough players. Again we were relying on one player. No problem for mid table mediocrity though, but a few injuries and you run the risk of getting dragged into a relegation battle.

Another thing is that this club is on a knife edge at the moment. It won’t take much to top it over. The fans are starting to get on Pardews back and defeat against Southampton will probably lead to all out abuse for him against Hull.

      (Quote)

  20. Too many big players out injured or not up to speed now, Jabbas gamble and general all round tightness gonna come back to bite him on the **** now. There is a thin line between mid table mediocrity and a relegation battle and we should never be leaving ourselves open to such a scenario. Only a fool would think we’d get through a season without injuries to key personal, now the window is shut and we can do nowt until January . 🙁

      (Quote)

  21. TDS – better just let Stuart post to himself, mate, at least Troy wil big him up.

We’re about to see whether any of the other players is good enough. De Jong being unavailable ought to mean more game time, but not necessarily more starts, for Aarons, and maybe a different role for Cabella. Nobody cn call them on not being up to it until something like 10 games in IMO.

      (Quote)

  22. Lads, why has nobody in this blog picked up on the fact that AP actually admitted that he played SDJ when he wasn’t match fit and then 3/4 days later he’s ruled out for 4 months. This is not the first time this has happened. If you didn’t laugh, you’d cry. No shock why so many things seem to always go wrong for this man. Useless self-serving egotistical lying so and so.

Also TDS, having watched how badly are club has been run from top to bottom over the Ashley years do you really think MYM was let go because we had adequate cover and he dropped down the list? He was picked up by a champions league team for crying out loud. With a half decent manager he prob would have been first choice and has more talent in his little finger than staylor. He will released due to the fact he rightfully questioned the AP shambles last year, along with HBA. The same man that has wasted an array of talented and potentially talented individuals. He used these two as scapegoats for last seasons mess which is a disgrace. Get a grip

      (Quote)

  23. Buddy@264, I actually raised that very point after he admitted playing him when unfit on the post game blog and your right it’s not the first time he’s done it. It’s actually a sign of how desperate he was to win the game as he rates Siem highly and likely thought he’d provide service . God only knows what goes through his mind sometimes, to risk a guy when not 100% and not yet up to PL speed is amateur plain and simple.

      (Quote)

  24. where is Facundo Ferreyra?? is he injured.

I’m sure I read his ratio is a goal every two games, by that reckoning we would of won at Villa and @home to Palace 😛

    has he been Pardewed already?

      (Quote)

  25. Buddy – yes he did mate, and it could well be he’s put the final nail in his own coffin mate. I’ve rated De Jong long before we bought him, and that was questioned based on his debut. But it was crystal clear he was being played injured, and now he’s out til Xmas – good old Pardew. Still nevermind, Pardew is the best we can get so we’ll just have to get on with it.

  26. GTE – Another who’s just annoyed that I’m right. This nonsense of positivity is totally bizarre.

  27. Stuart @ 262 Wrong!

TDS’s argument was that papers write bullshit and don’t believe things till it happens or is official

Your argument was that everybody is saying it so it must be true.

TDS wasn’t wrong in any way. He just happened to pick up on a story that turned out to be different to the normal way of things. A little embarrassing maybe, but far from being wrong.

You, on the other hand, show yourself up as being a media tart. I find this more than a little ironic given that you have often said that others are being brainwashed by Mike Ashley.

At best you were right (to believe the media) but for the wrong reason. No merit in that as far as I’m concerned.

  28. I’ve always likened NUFC to the England national side.

We always expect England to do well each tournament.

They never do, but for some reason, the manager always takes the blame and is ridiculed as a buffoon by the press and the public.

Basically, the England job is a poisoned chalice.

    Why? you may ask.

Nothing more simple in my eyes.

The fans of England, quite rightly believe with our history, winning the World Cup in 66, having, allegedly the best league in the world, we should be able to compete with the top teams in the world.

    Not likely is the truth.

Why? Cos the players aren’t good enough. That’s why.

We are now considered the poor man of European International Football.
    A laughing stock.

We’ve had tihis since since 1970.

We won the World Cup in 66 and faired well in 70.

Since then, England has been a let down for the country.

Yes, we’ve had our skirmishes with success but ultimately not close enough. H

We’ve touched on success, England in 1990 and the Toon in 1996.

Similar close calls have mirrored our history.

Now I’ve analysed this for years and I continuously get frustrated with England fans.

    Are they delusional or disilusuonal.

Definitely delusional. It matters not who the manager is, but the results.

Well, England have been horrifically poor over the past 60 years other than the odd unexpected progression to the latter rounds of a major tournament.

I consider the Toon as the closest thing, in terms of results and fan base as anything other club in the country.

I despair when I hear criticism of others, playing for England yet they worship the group.

I hate the **** regarding Pardew not being good enough.

The facts are, he’s one of the best guitaristscwMumwn in the North East and

The Toon are a mirror image fot the National team.

The last time we’ve won anything was in the 60’s.

England continue to have a huge following, outnumbering other national sides.

They travel far and wide and show a passion that is unmatched by any other national team.

    Yet England win nothing. !

The similarities with England and the Toon is uncanny.

The facts are, both teams have had to put up with a system whereby, the pool of players they have to choose from, whether through money or birth , has resulted in both sides being limited in their results.

I never understand the huge criticism the England managers receive. It’s not like he can buy Messi or Muller.

    He is restricted like Pardew.

Hodgson can only work with the players he has at his disposal.

    No different to Pardew.

I’m sure Hodgson would love to select Ronaldo. He can’t. Just like Pardew can’t.

That doesn’t stop the England fans or the Toon fans from expecting big results.

The facts are simple. England have never had the players god enough to achieve things since 1966. But the manager has always got the blame.

The players, in the eyes of the deluded, believe England should always be in competing for the European and World Cup.

The comparison with NUFCi is uncanny.

Although sometime, of late, I question whether its lack of quality or heart/passion when it comes to supporting England.

The last World cup I think Woy came out quite well compared to the players, who were abysmal. We were never gonna win it but we should of done better than we did.

  32. A canny post Troy 😯 😛

I don’t particularly like the “delusional” tag but bar a select few clubs every set of fans are delusional. In my 40+ years following Newcastle I’ve went into every season hoping this is our year whether it be league or cup.Every year my hopes have been dashed but the following season the hope was/is there again (note: “hope” not “expectation”) I have never went to a Newcastle match thinking we are nailed on to get beat because my “hope” always overrides my “logic”, actually that’s not strictly true as in the early 80’s we played Dynamo Kiev in pre season and being as we were a **** 2nd Div team and 8 (ish) of their team made up the old Soviet team I expected a good humping, we won 2-1 so that taught me to listen to my logic!!
We’ve generally had **** or average managers and owners over the years and I haven’t let any of them take my hope or dreams away from me nor will I ever.
I may be “”delusional and I may have “blind faith” but that’s what football is about surely? it’s about escaping the drudgery of our everyday lives and allowing us to dream for 90 minutes. Newcastle United will, more often than not crush your dreams each week but I for one will be queuing up again full of my delusional hope the following week for the next crushing. Sorry but that’s what supporting Newcastle or most other clubs is about, hope/dreams/faith followed by disappointment/frustration/anger with the odd moment of joy/ecstasy/jubilation hoyed in. It’s pretty much the way it’s always been and is unlikely to ever change, just strap in and try and enjoy the highs more than you hate the lows, it makes life a little more bearable 😉

  33. Nice one, richie. I like that a lot (apart from the drudgery bit – my life isn’t a drudge). It just about sums up my attitude to Newcastle as well.

I wrote a short story for the blog about my first visit to St James’ Park – in Geordie (or some sort of rendition of it). Maybe Toonsy will see fit to publish it sometime.

I see Mikey Ashley was pictured in a Plymouth restaurante. Is he buying them now too? That’s about the size of club he should have bought. No disrespect to them but that size of club wouldn’t need much money spent and he could do exactly what he does with NUFC – nothing!

  42. I seem to remember Sterling and Suso being thrown in the deep end at liverpool during an injury crisis, Ones flourished and the other ones disapeared from their squad. Could go either way for Aarons.

We’ll see how good the lad is and Pardew as well, IMO his most impressive spell at NUFC was not the 5th place manager of the year part but his first half season after replacing Hughton; He was canny getting Nolan onside first and getting the then (relatively) popular Saylor a new deal. He got some form out of Best and Lovenkrands after Carrolls departure and Sholas injury. We should have finished higher and never looked like going down at any point which is no mean feat for a newly promoted side.

Hes in an even weaker position now, Hes going have to show some similar savvy or he’ll struggle to last the month if reports are to be believed

  46. The Pardew/Ashley blame game and argument majig doing the rounds again and I think I’ve made my feelings pretty clear on the subject over many, many years. I’m inclined to agree with those thinking any change will at least give me something else to think about and everyone something else to talk about. On the other hand I can completely agree with TDS/Prem/GTE and others who say, it’s unlikey and/or pointless because it will cost Ashley money for no clear gain, and we all know Ash won’t do it.

I’d still like a change, just to see what happens. It’s like if you’ve been seeing a girl for a while and you meet another one who isn’t discernibly any better, but you take the plunge in the hope that something fresh will get rid of the tedium 😛

I am pissed off about the De Jong injury though, it’s one thing we didn’t need while everyone was just trying to get settled. Maybe we will at least see Chucky though (PS can’t help keeping a smile off my face when people criticise Pardew for not playing two up front, when he was hounded for yonks because that was the sytem he was sticking to only a year or two ago, which was apparently outdated, English, trash)
